Review: FIFA 08 (All systems)

By Lang Whitaker

It's not at all exaggerating to say that I probably played FIFA 07 more than I've ever played any video game in my entire life. It's not that the game had groundbreaking graphics or revolutionary AI or anything. It was just a fun game, a little cartoonish, if anything. But for some reason, I found myself enthralled with the manager mode, and I spent months trying to get teams from lower divisions promoted into the top leagues, and then win titles. My virtual managerial career found me as soccer's premier turnaround artist, a coach who could go into any situation and create success.

NCAA 08
FIFA 08 :: EA Sports
So I couldn't wait for EA Sports to drop FIFA, especially because for the first time ever, the game was made for the PS3. And it's a beautiful game, particularly on a big HD screen. The players seem a little larger and the gameplay is definitely slower than in previous years, but the graphics are shiny and as crisp as Coco.

FIFA 08 stresses trickery, meaning you really need to master the juke moves and stepovers in order to beat a defender one-v-one. And in past years, where getting the ball down the wing and then crossing in a pass seemed to ensure plenty of goals, FIFA 08 seems to reward more play down the center of the field. If you can trigger a guy on a run and hit him with a lead pass, you can score goals, but it's not nearly as easy to notch goals as it used to be. Corner kicks have also continued to become more difficult, with opposing goalies coming off their lines more often than ever.

While last year's Xbox 360 version was sort of a bare-bones game, this year the PS3 and 360 versions are jammed with modes. The Be A Pro mode shifts FIFA into almost a first-person view. The camera focuses on whichever player you choose to control, chasing him around all over the pitch, even if the ball is nowhere near you. Sounds like it could be pretty boring, but this mode is actually a lot of fun. It's fun playing as a striker, which requires you to hang around the opposition's backline without going offside and then creating a run to the goal, praying your teammate finds you with a pass. When you're making a run and you hit the turbo, the camera zooms in, the controls tighten up and the view gets a little jittery, much like what really happens when you really try to run full speed (or in my case, you pull a muscle and vomit). Sadly, you're not allowed to play an entire game as a goalkeeper, which seems like it might at least be interesting.

There are plenty of other modes as well, from tournaments to managerial. Where managerial mode in FIFA 07 used to have me addicted, it's not as much fun on 08, maybe because you don't get to pick your manager's headshot and get battered with questions about whether or not you should give the team bus a fresh coat of paint. But I did love the Challenge Mode, which requires you play through various leagues and complete a series of tasks which escalate in difficulty, from shutting out a team to scoring five goals in one half with a midfielder. I'm still working on that last one.

The game offers a bunch of online options, including interactive leagues. I got the game a few weeks before it came out, and when I went online into one of the lounge areas to try and find a game, there was nobody online, the one pitfall of getting the game early. Anyway, I'm still trying to score five goals in a half with Patrick Viera. Might be working on that for a while.

Ratings System (1 to 10)
Game Play: 8.2
While it's not easy to play like Ronaldinho, you can still play like Wayne Rooney, blasting toward the goal. It's also fun on set pieces to take control of your keeper and try not to allow a howler.
Graphics: 9
Much like Pamela Anderson, the game is aesthetically pleasing but perhaps not so emotionally resonant. The stadiums -- including 30 licensed real stadiums -- look terrific, though.
Replayability: 8.3
The vast online options should provide plenty of options to play over and over again against various opponents, but by cleaning up the manager mode, EA has also made it not as much fun.

sorry man. i'm a winning eleven guy. fifa is okay though. the challenges are addictive and Be A Pro sounds promising.
Pro Evo is where its at. Did EA pay you to write this positive review for FIFA. I had FIFA 07 and it sucked. The ball wayed a thousand pounds, the graphics were mediocre and goalies made bumbling mistakes and you couldn't score on crosses. Pro Evo is the game don't waste your time playing this garbage that is FIFA 08.

I found the AI to be so horrible that it overshadowed everything else in the game. I honestly have never been frustrated by a game until I played FIFA 08. EA really needs to fix the simple things to allow this series to reach any level of quality.

I got this game for PC. Past 2 years I was a big PES fan and absolutely refused to play FIFA. This time around I decided to give it a shot. To my surprise, it was not bad at all; game play actually feels a bit like PES game play, overall very fun game. The graphics on PC are not as good as on PS3 or 360, but casual fans can still enjoy. Congrats EA games, you are finally on the path to success.
this version is alot tougher 2 play than FIFA 07.
Smarter goalies.. faster defenders..harder to make shots on goal. this game is fun.. but not easy

The writer called it correctly when he said that this year's game focuses more on scoring from in front of the goal vs. being able to cross from the sideline. I have Fifa 08 on PS2 and it is a great game. It is harder than last year and at times can be frustrating(why does the computer constantly steal the ball without being called for a foul but you steal and get called for all kinds of fouls) but even with the difficulty meter upped I find the game hard to put down. Meaning every game has been a challenge and as long as you can deal with losing some games and winning some tight ones you will enjoy this game. Fifa 07 was good and Fifa 08 is good as well but the Champions League game that came out earlier this year probably best combines the fun of 07 and the challenge of 08 perfectly. But I am a fan of all the games.

I continue to hear about the difficulty of scoring on crosses both with 07 and now 08. However, it just requires hitting the shoot button at the right time or bringing the ball under control and then shooting. In the prior years, you simply had to hit the shoot button as soon as you crossed and you tended to score. What's the fun in that. I will admit that 08 is more difficult but each version requires adjusting to the play. I tend to go back to the basics because the advanced dribbling is difficult to keep possession. Any tips on how to properly use the advanced dribbling?
This is a biased review. Winning Eleven (or Pro Evolution, same thing) is superior to FIFA. In fact, FIFA's "improvements" are simply perfections to their game to make it more similar to Winning Eleven. Don't waste your time with FIFA if you're a real soccer player.

I agree with other posters on the difficulty of this new version of FIFA, its incredibly hard to create your own goal and scoring is usually reliant on poaching rebounds and putting quality crosses into the box. Also, the defense of the computer can be infuriating at times, as they consistently execute precise slide tackles and rarely get called for penalties or fouls. Still a fun and addicting game, but incredibly frustrating initially.

I also never got the passion of Pro Evolution fans.

PES is lame, who likes to play games without the licenses.

"So I couldn't wait for EA Sports to drop FIFA, especially because for the first time ever..."

You liked the game, yet you couldn't wait for them to drop it? What in the world are you talking about?
On the whole this is a great game, but I've got 2 major complaints about it...

1.) You can't control the player on the receiving end of a through ball until he either gets possesion, or the ball is intercepted which can be infuriating because it results in a lot of interceptions.

2.) It is way to difficult to fire a line drive shot towards the goal from a free kick, I always end up eithe lobing the ball over the goal, or striking it with no power.
Drop means release, in this case.
