Commentary, news, analysis and reader-driven discussions focusing on this year's Stanley Cup playoffs.
By Scott Wraight, SI.com 1. Ray Emery, Ottawa -- The Senators are in an 0-2 hole, but don't blame Emery, who was brilliant Wednesday. The 24-year-old backstop not only seemed unfazed by the constant traffic in front of him, but he withstood Anaheim's first-period barrage of shots. For the game, Emery turned away 30 of 31 -- and he was partially screened on the one that got past him. 2. J-S Giguere, Anaheim -- He wasn't tested as often as Emery, but Jiggy was just as strong -- stopping all 16 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of these playoffs. You had the feeling it was going to be a good night for Giguere when he made a handful of dazzling saves during a 5-on-3 at 13:24 of the first period. 3. Sami Pahlsson, Anaheim -- He played a solid checking game all night, and then supplied the game's only offense. After reeling in a Dany Heatley turnover, the 29-year-old winger slapped a shot between Joe Corvo's legs and just inside the far post.

Comments:However Emery did give up a goal thats why J.S. deserves the 1st Star by being a brick wall!
Ducks are stronger defensively. Great defense wins championships.
no, being a small market team and being goons without the league caring is why you'll win the cup. bettman is screwing up hockey and is trying to bring hockey into a small market teams area, and he wants california. boycott hockey if the ducks win, becuase thats a joke
Way to go DUCKS..punish those Canadians!!!!
I'm not at all sure why people react the way they do when their team loses.
Anaheim has outplayed Ottawa (as I knew they would) in both games and deserves to be up 2-0. To blame Bettman (who should be shot on general principles anyway) or the officials instead of lacklustre play by your team is silly and the sign of somebody who needs to grow up. The 3 stars as listed are accurate in my opinion. Emery was the sole reason it wasn't 3-0 or 4-0. Guigere was a solid second star who really only had to work hard on that 5 on 3 siutation. And Sami P would have been the first star on any other night. But people have to get over blaming everybody else but their own team for losses. The Ducks play a hard brand of hockey. But Ottawa came out of the blocks trying to emulate that style. Ask Corey Perry. I'm surprised he wasn't concussed after last night's game he was pasted so often. why is emery the first star yeah he did good but at the end he lost he gave it up!! should be alittle lower maybe the third star or something
It is not surprising to me that the constant barrage of "dirty play" comments are being made towards the ducks. however, for the most part, the penalties are being called and the sens are not capitalizing. it is that simple. When you lose two games by one goal and in both of those games, you fail to score on a 5 on 3 advantage that is over a minute long, you have no one to blame but yourself. I applaud the Ducks for their rough and tumble type of play. i also applaud the refs for calling penalties when the line is crossed. If the Sens would just capitalize, the Duck would be forced to be less aggressive. Period.
As much as J.S. is playing so well I hope someone else wins MVP when the Ducks win the Cup. He shouldn't have won it in 2003 so this will be the time he should have won but won't
Hey east coast remember the Philly teams from the 70's , Anaheim just took a page from their play book . Just sit back and enjoy the HITS!
Emery deserved his first star status as he was the only reason the game wasn't decided long before the 15 minute mark of the third period. Guigere also deserves high marks for keeping his focus while facing so few shots - as any goalie will tell you (yes, I am one), it is often easier to win a 1-0 game facing 33 shots than it is facing only 16 as more shots keeps you in a groove. The Sens have no one to blame but themselves for the 0-2 hole. Their offense has pulled a disappearing act ala Eric Lindros in the 97 Finals vs. Detriot - he was an MVP candidate coming into the Finals and was a complete non-factor in the Wings sweep of my Flyers. And Wednesday's game was a great one to watch - who says 1-0 games are boring?
