Sports Illustrated will announce its choice for Sportsman of the Year on Dec. 4. Below are some personal choices for that honor by SI writers.

My Sportsman: Vince McMahon

Vince McMahon

By Andy Gray

My choice for Sportsman of the Year is World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman Vincent Kennedy McMahon.

Yes, that Vince McMahon. The guy who brought you the XFL and called Bob Costas an "elitist" during a contentious interview five years ago. The guy who, on multiple occasions, dropped his pants on national television so his wrestlers could join the "Vince McMahon Kiss My Ass Club."

While the choice may seem absurd on the surface, here's why McMahon has earned my vote: the WWE's Tribute to the Troops tour.

Dozens of wrestlers, crew members and assorted employees have embarked over the past four years on a five-day USO-style sweep through the Middle East to entertain the troops. According to McMahon, the trip has replaced Wrestlemania as the most important event on the WWE calendar.

"The smiles on the faces of those men and women over in Iraq is something that is very dear to our heart," McMahon says. "They are the most appreciative audience that we will play to all year long."

The tour is the brainchild of wrestler-turned-announcer John Bradshaw Layfield, who came up with the idea while visiting Kuwait. He proposed the idea to McMahon and within weeks, the first tour was scheduled. Over five days, the wrestlers visit 25 bases (about eight or nine per wrestler) and spend time with the troops. This is quality time, not a 20-minute "appearance" where a performer poses for pictures before heading to the next destination. Instead, the wrestlers eat with the troops, sleep on the floor of their barracks and get a full taste of military life.

While five days may not seem like much of a commitment, it's five more days than any other professional sports team spent in Iraq this year. More importantly, the company doesn't make a dime off the trip. It's simply a way for McMahon and the rest of the WWE to say thank you to a group of people who are too often overlooked.

I'm not attempting to argue the merits of professional wrestling as a sport or justify what goes on within a WWE ring. Some of it's entertaining. Some if it's absurd. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What I do know is that every time I see an NBA "Read to Achieve" or NFL United Way commercial, I can't help but wonder how much goes beyond a neatly packaged commercial with a catchy theme song and well-placed images of an athlete and child sharing a laugh.

When I tune into WWE each Christmas, however, I see hundreds of exhausted soldiers, many on their third and fourth tours of duty, forgetting that they have to spend another holiday away from their families and enjoying themselves as they eat, sleep and hang out with professional wrestlers. And for that, McMahon earns my Sportsman of the Year vote.

I couldnt agree with you more as a former Marine!

Wow. I laughed at first, but McMahon actually does a pretty good thing for the soldiers. It's nice to see someone isn't forgetting them.
Posted: 2:34 PM   by Anonymous
interesting choice. probably deserving, but certainly no David Ortiz.
Posted: 2:59 PM   by Anonymous
beautiful story and certainly worthy of recognition. As one who works with the troops as a counselor I can tell you first hand how much this means to them. Kudos to Vince Mc Mahon and to you for acknowledging him

I was actually there for the first show they did in Baghdad in 2003. All the wrestlers I talked to told me they thouroughly enjoyed themselves, and had a great time sharing stories with us. I also had a brief conversation with Vince McMahon and he is nothing like what he is on tv. He is very kind and patriotic, and he is a great choice. The only better choice for Sportsman would have been the entire WWE organization.
Posted: 3:55 PM   by Anonymous
It's about time someone recognizes the good things that Vince McMahon and the WWE bring to people and not just all the bad publicity and negative feedback that you normally hear.
Posted: 3:59 PM   by Anonymous
i couldn't agry anymore. McMahon makes the best show for the troops and he makes the best show for everyone.
Posted: 4:02 PM   by Rob Kelley
Its about time people begin seeing Vince McMahon for who he truly is...not a wrestler, not the XFL commish, not someone who corrupts the youth, but for a humanitarian who gives back to the country as much as any other true patriot! He should win this award. Not some player who signs a few autographs or gives a miniscule portion of his enormous checks to charity (Ortiz)!
Posted: 4:11 PM   by Anonymous
It's an interesting choice, but it's not a completely altruistic one. McMahon (and wrestling) itself gets a bad rap in the public eye and this is the best positive publicity they get all year. I think a better choice are the wrestlers who sacrifice being with their families to go voluntarily, but I think Vince is deserving as well.
Posted: 4:26 PM   by Anonymous
Finally, credit where it deserves to go. I know of no other sports organization that gives as much as the WWE does. It goes beyond the troops, and unlike other people, they don't spend millions telling us about it. When others contributions usually are small, they stop at nothing to advertise it.
Posted: 4:35 PM   by Anonymous
As a long time WWF and now WWE fan, I can not agree with this pick more. Although Vince does portray a psychotic boss on WWE television, as his character, he is still a somewhat normal and compassionate person. It's nice to see someone (The entire WWE) taking time out of their schedule to spread joy to the people who deserve it most, our troops.
Posted: 4:41 PM   by Anonymous
wwe is doing such a good thing for the troops. my husband will love it if he gets to go!!
Posted: 4:44 PM   by Jason Dimoni
I despise professional wrestling - I think it's trash TV. However, I did watch the event they did in Afghanistan last year with my wife after seeing it on MSNBC, and I must say that it was a classy, honorable show. I'd give McMahon this award, this once, for his annual contribution to those who defend our homeland and ultimately our professional sports too.

as a airforce brat who's dad flew A10's in desertstorm/shield i applaud your decision to pick the WWE.by the way i'm a life long wwe fan as i grew up on the then wwf and had all the toys, etc. wrestling fan or not,no one else goes over there.could you see the nfl playing an exhibition game in the desert?no way.why?because they won't make time.
Way to go Vince!!
Posted: 4:48 PM   by Anonymous
You are right on! So much of the "good deed" type of stuff from other organizations are nothing but publicity ops. Your perspective is refreshing!
Posted: 5:14 PM   by Anonymous
This has become an annual tradition for WWE. I'm a former Army man. If I were over there, WWE would be the perfect break I need to take away the stress of this war! Thank you, Mr. McMahon and keep up the good work!
Posted: 5:26 PM   by Anonymous
What WWE does is remarkable for a few reasons: the first is that no one else does it; another is that these wrestlers have no off season. They wrestle 52 weeks a year, and to use one of those weeks, during the holiday season, AND to put themselves in possible danger is no doubt beyond commenable. This award not only belongs to McMahon (who personally makes the trip as well), but to the entire WWE. The rest of Hollywood and the sports world could learn from them
Posted: 5:26 PM   by Anonymous
THANK YOU for finally recognizing the things the WWE does for the Troops in Iraq. As much as I can't stand Vince, as a character, this is the best thing he has ever done. I watched all of the Tribute To The Troops Specials and they really seem to enjoy it. I hope that if Vince does win that he doesn't catch any crap from the media that say he isn't an athelte. Go Vince and WWE and GOD BLESS THE TROOPS
Posted: 5:33 PM   by Anonymous
I think that Vince McMahon is the only possible choice that can be considered for this award. He and his company (WWE), do more for our nation's heroes, and for their fans, than any other sports or entertainment organization does. The men and women that put on this show are taking time away from their families during the Christmas season, and risking their lives, to give back to those who risk their lives daily for all of us. I think that our football and baseball "heroes" should take notes while watching WWE's visit to Iraq this year, and maybe consider donating some of their time to supporting our troops as well. Thank you Andy Gray for looking past the controversial concept of sports-entertainment, and nominating someone who deserves to be recognized. Merry Christmas and God Bless.

This is a fantastic pick for Sportsman of the year. It really is a breath of fresh air to see someone who does so much for many different charities, not just the troops...look into the Make-A-Wish foundation too, get some recognition for his efforts (and the efforts of his entire company!) 5 days really doesn't seem like a lot, but for those soldiers...it's 5 days they don't have to worry about the war or being away from their families. And that, my friends, can feel like an eternity...and a lasting memory. Kudos to Vince McMahon!!
Posted: 5:37 PM   by Anonymous
Wow, a very good choice, Vince McMahon and WWE doesnt earn a penny on this, they just lose money on it but they dont care, now thats a real hero. We should honor the ones that are honoring the heros
Posted: 5:41 PM   by Anonymous
As a wrestling reporter myself, I have to say that Mr.McMahon is worthy of this award. He has faced the negative attitude from some press, and I respect him for that.
Posted: 5:43 PM   by Anonymous
This is not only a chance to bring back the war to the forfront of everyday people and young folks as well. Mr. McMahon takes on a roll that very few would chose, he and his staff brings hope that a loved one maybe seen on tv. One that is in the trenches of hell, and they are there as well. Big Up's to the whole McMahan Family and GOD SPEED.
Posted: 5:44 PM   by MICHAEL COUSSEILLANT
I THINK VINCE,MCMAHON DESEVER TO BE THE SPORTSMAN OF YEAR BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE TO BRING HIS COMPANY-WWE OVER TO IRAQ BUT HE DID IT BECAUSE HE RESPECT THE TROOPS, HE BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING,HE BELIEVE IN WHAT AMERICA IS TRY TO ACCOMPLISH. AND FOR THAT I THINK HIM. UNLIKE THE NFL OR THE NBA THEY DON'T COME OUT THEIR TO THANK THE SOLDIERS FOR THEIR SERVICE. INSTEAD THEY OFFER THEM A TV TO WATCH THEM PLAY HERE AT IN THE UNITED STATES. AND THAN THINK IT'S ALL GOOD. I THINK THAT IS DISRESPECTING. IF THE WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT (WWE) CAN DO IT, SO CAN THE NFL AND NBA.
Posted: 5:48 PM   by Anonymous
As an non-American, I know the highs that this award isheld in by sports men and women in the states. I also know the great work that the WWE carries out in Iraq means a lot to the US Soliders fighting day in, day out, away from their families and friends, to try and make life a little bit easier on the rest of us. No other sporting body will acknowledge this the way the WWE does. These sportsmen go to a war zone each time, not known what awaits them, but they do this and feel an honour in doing so. Therefore, I would like to say, well done Vince, WWE and more importantly, SI. It took courage for you guys to award this, well done!
Posted: 5:51 PM   by Anonymous
As a Navy retiree and a WWE fan, I agree! Vince McMahon and the WWE deserve this award.
Posted: 6:02 PM   by Anonymous
I think this is spot on. Vince McMahon and the WWE put on a show, not only just for 5 days, but a whole year, for us troops. The WWE allows for troops in the states to attend his events for free or reduced price, just with showing your military ID card. His stars visit military exchanges, and sign autographs for all of us, because of who we adore. His family, not only the immediate, but the so many employees who are dedicated to making this yearly event a success, is just a magnification of his generousity. As an Air Force Security Forces Member serving currently in Iraq, it just makes me want to do my job more, knowing the entertainment we recieve is top notch from a person who knows how to deliver it.

I agree with all of the comments that have been posted, Vince McMahon(representing the entire WWE organization) is absolutely the most deserving person of this award. What these men and women do for us all is nothing short of amazing, and the Tribute to the Troops is such a wonderful thing for them all. Thank you Mr. Gray, Thank you Mr. McMahon, and God Bless the Troops

I worked security as an MP and escorted the WWE around Baghdad in 2003 and the wrestlers and staff could not have been more friendly and open. To this day you still do not see any politician leave the secure areas for any length of time to see the troops. Great choice!!!!

I have personally met and worked for Vince McMahon as a chauffeur. In more than 15 years of chauffeuring, Vince is one of my top 3 passengers/clients. He is ALWAYS nice to me and has met my family because he asked to. He is considerate and kind and really takes time with people. He may be ostentatious (sp) at times but he is one of the best people I have EVER met. He talks of the the troops and their sacrafices often.
SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR
Posted: 6:18 PM   by Anonymous
Thank You Andy Gray for giving Vince this award. Not only does Vince deserve it but every superstar in the WWE who takes time out of their schedule to be with are brave men and women in Iraq. Ever since i became a fan of the WWE the one thing i loved to see was the troops getting a break from all the war. Thumbs up to You for giving him the award. You couldn't have picked a better man.
Posted: 6:21 PM   by Anonymous
I agree with you!! What Vince McMahon and the WWE is doing for the soldiers it is a great thing because it would put a smile on the soldiers faces!!!!

yes very good choice i really thought i would see a lot of people disagree and give u hell but no there isnt. great story also.

I've watched the WWE in the past when they have been with the troops, and it is absolutely wonderful. I think it is AWSOME what they do for the troops morale.

its about time! you know, you guys often say it's not a sport, but let me tell you something, there are life long injuries and even deaths in the squared circle and thats real. So SI if your as real as they say, step up to the plate and show us! Rene Delgado (Eddie Guerrero's Amigo)

What Vince McMahon portrays on camera isnt the Vince that was in Iraq. He was sincerely intrested in the needs of the Marines he was meeting. WWE has also established a free or reduced rate admission to military personnel at many WWE events.
Posted: 6:51 PM   by Banana
The WWE as a whole needs more credit. They actually do more good than just this over the years they to have had a reading campain and a voting campain they do care about america we could care more about them
Posted: 7:03 PM   by Anonymous
For my whole entire life, i have loved WWE. I know, McMahon is meanie on television, but he is one good person. He deserves this award [ and deserved it years before ] thanks Andy!
Posted: 7:30 PM   by TSgt William Wood
I was in Kuwait when JBL was there in 2003, and actually had lunch with him. It wasn't set up formally or anything just a normal guy eating lunch with the troops because he wanted to be there. This annual event along with the smack down your vote campaign, and the other numerous charities the WWE contributes to should be enough to get Mr. McMahon the sportsman of the year award.
Posted: 7:43 PM   by Anonymous
I am a big fan of pro wrestling these days. And even if I don't always like what the WWE wrestlers do in the ring, I think it is so great to watch the way they give so much time and energy to their fans. Vince McMahon is one of those guys who would do anything for the wrestling industry and to entertain the fans, and his Tribute to the Troops makes that loud and clear. There is no other man who deserves this more than Vince does.
Posted: 7:44 PM   by Anonymous
I completely agree with giving McMahon the award. The WWE Tribute to the Troops is a great gesture to the men and women serving the country. The wrestlers take time out of their own personal holidays to spend time with the troops, and the show seems to really uplift the troops. McMahon really deserves this award. It's the "Sportsman of the Year" award, not the "Most Talented Person Who Plays Sports" award. McMahon and the WWE wrestlers are much better picks for "Sportsmen" than say, Alberto Pujols.
Posted: 7:45 PM   by Anonymous
WHATTT finally they see the man behind the mask

the best choice anyone could make
thank you
Posted: 8:25 PM   by Anonymous
The only shame in all of this is that it took the mainstream media so long to acknowledge what McMahon and the WWE have done for the troops. I've been watching these "Tribute to the Troops" shows for the past 5 years, and it was touching to see the time and effort put in by the WWE Superstars for the troops, who more than deserve it. Kudos to Andy Gray for acknowledging it.
Posted: 8:26 PM   by Anonymous
I congratulate the wrestlers for going, but Vince McMahon?

He'll spend a year bragging about it and using the footage to sell DVDs and promote anti-foreigner angles to make himself money for doing so. The gesture is great for the troops, but if you saw the show last year, it was two hours of the WWE telling people how great they were for going.
Posted: 8:26 PM   by Anonymous
People may laugh at the WWE and Vince McMahon but I don't see anyone else going over there and doing what they do. The whole organization deserves it. And to those who say professional wrestlers aren't real athletes -- I'd like to see any "professional athlete" get out there and do what they do in the ring. They'd get their butts kicked.
Posted: 8:28 PM   by mboxphantom
What the WWE does for the troops is even noticed down under in Australia!! We have musicians here that do similar but not on the scale the WWE does or on a regular basis and what makes it more noticable is when you see it you check to see if any other big sports or entertainment groups are doing similar and each year they only do it if they look like it will help make them money! The WWE show such genuine desire to just go and say thanks to the troops who give up so much to keep not only the US but much of the world safe from people like saddam and other terrorist threats. So from many fans the WWE has "Down Under" thanks for looking after those who give up their own freedom to look after everyone else's !!!!!!
Posted: 8:34 PM   by Anonymous
I agree 100%. He brought the show to us in Iraq (Active USAF). I can't thank Vince enough for doing that for us and keeping a tradition going. Bob Hope was the last to do that for the troops!
Posted: 8:44 PM   by Anonymous
Finally somebody reconizes the WWE! WWE has been the only company that does this and continues to do this every year! I do not miss on episode of WWE programming all year round, and the. Tribute to The Troops is one of my favorites all year! Vince better win this award and if he doesn't I will have 2 Words for the people who voted against him: S*ck It! Go Vince, and the WWE!
Posted: 8:59 PM   by Anonymous
I think he dose deserve it because the troops never get a huge thank you from bush for 5 days strait so mr machman is the one.
Posted: 9:15 PM   by Anonymous
Absolutely excellent choice. The man is a true humanitarian and deserves something good be said of him. He takes a lot of bad raps for his WWE, but for their efforts with our brave soldiers he deserves all the accolades he can get.
Posted: 9:17 PM   by Anonymous
If vince does not get this award i will start a worldwide boycott od SI
(except the swinsuit issue)

It seems amazing to me that it took five years to finally get someone in the "mainstream" media to pay attention. I guess this story wasn't sexy enough, as a life long fan, who by the way like most fans has a career, and has completed high school, and isn't a juvenile delinquent, we always knew that this was going on, but then again we the common every guy and gal supports the troops and we also support Vince McMahon his lovely family and the incredible organization that they have built over the years. The fact that the organization doesn't make any money on this project doesn't surprise me, they don't on their voting project nor on their literacy project. They actually do the work that the NFL, NBA, and the MLB organizations tell us each every commercial break that they do. Additionally these men and women, the wrestlers who when they are killed in the ring or they die (often very young) have their families listen ridicule from radio and TV commentators who tell the world that they were "absolutely on steroids and other drugs" and deserved to die. But I have seen "legitimate" sports figures who have been caught and then allowed to continue their careers. Vince Mcmahon has had in place a policy of drug testing that has only gotten stronger in recent years. I congratulate Mr. McMahon and all of the members of the WWE family. Tammi L. Way-Kornow Ph.D, JD
Posted: 9:21 PM   by Psyencediva
I have to admit that to see these wrestler's make a difference in the soldiers lives, is nothing but amazing! I appreciate it because I get a firsthand look at how our troops live because the WWE chronicles everything done overseas. I have more appreciation for the men and women that are there preserving our freedom. Vince McMahon is an excellent choice for this award because he will be a pioneer. This will be the first time a Sports Entertainer gets the recognition of being Sportsman of the Year and he will pave the way for other Superstars to be considered for the award.

This is a good thing WWE does for the troops every year. It brings wwe from home to them. They get a piece of action since they are so far away.

He wont win, never in a million years. But he should.
Posted: 10:03 PM   by Ohio's front row neon pink & yellow couple
I work for the Bureau of Workers Comp in state government in Columbus Ohio & conduct an annual auction that benefits over 400 Ohio charities. Andy Gray & SI couldn't have made a more deserving nomination for Sportsman of the Year than Vince McMahon. Numerous times over the years, I've been allowed by Vince to go backstage at WWE TV tapings & get numerous items signed by his entire rosters of wrestlers for my auction. Each time, Vince greets my wife & I personally to make sure that we get everything we need. He also makes sure all of the stars on the WWE roster greet us backstage & sign every charity item we have. Every year, WWE donates boxes of additional autographed items for my auction, and has even included front row ringside seats & backstage "meet & greet" packages as auction items. Because my co-workers know of WWE's generosity of donating items for our annual auction, some ocassionally ask me about autographed items or WWE stuff during the holiday season for underprivilaged kids. So when asked, all it takes is one call to WWE, and any one of the Community Relations people send me not only an item or 2, but usually another huge box of 2 dozen items or so...all signed by WWE stars. In addition, Vince has allowed numerous WWE stars (including The Rock back in 1998) to appear at our offices to sign autographs for charity. I could go on & on, but my point is that Vince & WWE are continually bashed in mainstream media for aspects of their storylines or TV characters...when their TV show is no different than "ER" or "24" or any one of a dozen TV shows with so-called "adult storylines" & those shows seem to be unscathed. It's about time that Vince & the entire WWE organization are recognized for who they are as real people, instead of what their TV characters portray. It's so sad that WWE is the only sports organization that truly goes out of their way to show appreciation for the brave men & women fighting overseas. God Bless our troops every day; God Bless Vince & the entire WWE for making the annual trip overseas for the troops, and God Bless to Andy Gray & SI for finally acknoledging Vince & WWE for their yearly act of kindness. Please make Vince McMahon & WWE the Sports Illustrated Sportsmen of the Year come December 4.

I am a huge wwe fan and vince mcmahon definitely deserves it because after all the soldiers give to us, the wwe is able to give something back.
This would be a good award for him if his company still focused on the WRESTLING and not as much as the entertainment. Until then, he should get credit, but not from a SPORT magazine.
Posted: 10:35 PM   by Anonymous
I think it's about time someone gave Mr. McMahon and the WWE some recognition for what they do for the troops and for America. And I agree that other than the nice commercials that the NFL or NBA or MLB put on TV, you really don't see or hear, about any of it outside those commercials, where as WWE says they're doing a 5-day tour for the troops over and Iraq and they actually do it. It's to bad they couldn't say the entire WWE as opposed to just Mr. McMahon, but as I an avid WWE fan, I couldn't think of a man or organization more deserving of the award than Vince McMahon and the WWE. Good job on finally getting this one right for a change.

great choice!!!

i completely agree with your choice...
Posted: 10:52 PM   by Anonymous
I agree that this is a wonderful act from McMahon. He is well deserving of being achknowledged for what's he's done for the troops. He is well deserving of being recognized by SI for this particular act.

However, the title of "The Sportsman of the Year" is not appropriate for Vince McMahon, Jr in my opinion.

And it's not because I'm dissing wrestling or anything like that. In fact, I'm a huge wrestling fan who has become somewhat knowledgeable of the history of the entire business.

I grew up watching WWE (and other promotions) in the 1980's, and looking back on things if it were not for McMahon's influence on the product I probably would never have started watching wrestling at all. All the characters that he helped create were what drew me into wrestling.

However, some of this current business tactics are not what I would call ethical.

Wrestlers lead a very hard life, contrary to what most non-wrestling fans would ever imagine. Not only the toll it takes on their bodies is very real, the time spent away from their families for some of them is really hard on them mentally.

And let's just say that his "sports entertainers" have it that much harder with McMahon as their boss.

I would think that former Olympic Gold Medalist and multi-time WWE, Tag Team, and Intercontinental Champion (and current Total Non-Stop Action wrestler) Kurt Angle may tend to agree with me.

And if you talked to some of the old time werstling promoters from the days before Vince McMahon was "the only show in town" so to speak, they would probably tend to agree with me.

I could probably write my own full blown article on why I feel this way.

I in no way mean to diminish what he's done for our troops. I wish more people would do the same. I wish people realized at home just how important what those troops are doing, and I respect those men and women to the utomst. McMahon is well deserving of accolades for what he is doing for those troops.

However, I just can't agree that Vince McMahon should win any type of sportsmanship award for the reasons stated and more.
Posted: 10:57 PM   by Anonymous
Thank You Mr. Gray. Its good to see the WWE Chairman and wrestling getting some kudos from the mainstream sports media. Every year the WWE goes to Iraq and Afganistan and get no credit for it. Its about time.
Posted: 12:06 AM   by Anonymous
This is a great honor for a great organization. Vince McMahon deserves the recognition. You don't hear of The Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees flying over to the Middle East for the holidays. Even if it is during their off-season, which by the way the WWE does not have one. No other professional group/team from the NFL, NBA, NHL, or even the MLB has taken time to entertain the troops each of the last 4 years.

THANK YOU for finally recognizing the things the WWE dose . ya it aint a sport the wwE aint no sport its entertainment and that is what thay do good for you wwe keep it up

I couldnt agree with you more, Vince McMahon is an amazing person, the charities his companies does every year that go unnoticed. The WWE going to see the troops is such an uplifting experience for those men and women, you can see if in their faces. God Bless the WWE and Vince McMahon.

Vince is a great leader, he can do everything he wants and by far this is one of his best accomplishments.

As a former member of th US Army things like that when you are far from home are PRICELESS! What others sports do for charity are great. They are also mandatory to do a certain amount. The WWE tour is voluntary. Nuff Said.

Great choice.
Posted: 1:24 AM   by Anonymous
I cant think of anyone more rewarding that Mr. McMahon and the superstars of the WWE. I dont believe that I will ever see the day that a basketball, football,or baseball player VOULENTEER to go and spend quality time with troops. If they do go, It wont be voulentarily. They will have to be paid millions of dollars to hire a manicurist and some one to clean the sand out of their "grill".
Posted: 1:28 AM   by Neil Christensen
A lot of people tend to look down their noses at Vince McMahon and the WWE. I enjoy the entertainment that they provide and appreciate the talent that they possess and I'm sure that the United States Troops do, as well. I think McMahon put it best by saying, "To those who truly believe, no explanation is necessary; to those that don't, no explanation will do." Both Vince McMahon and the WWE should get the credit that is due to them.
Posted: 2:53 AM   by Anonymous
Vince McMahon is simply doing the exact opposite of what our government does, HE CARES FOR THE TROOPS. Plain and simple.
Posted: 6:17 AM   by A. Lopez
Great Story!! I certainly agree with your choice of Vince Mc Mahon for SI sportsman of the year. Check out the WWE corporate website (http://corporate.wwe.com/) to learn about all of the other charities that he and his wrestlers give tirelessly of thier time and efforts. A very deserving choice.

I think that its about time that people give recognisation to the wwe there wrestlers bust there ass 4 to 5 times a week in the ring and then travel to arack to support the troops what other sport company does that?
Posted: 7:50 AM   by Anonymous
I think sportsman of the year should go to Vince McMahon and WWE as a whole because its not just Vince and the Superstars but the whole company that gets involed

Vincent Kennedy McMahon is the best! He has been providing all that watch his shows with the best entertainment there is. It is great that Pro Wrestling entertainment is getting the recognition. All wrestling fans can now have a big laugh at the sports fans who made jokes about wrestling all thoses years look folks the largest attendance for any sports event in history was for a Pro wrestling event.

Vince McMahon is the greatest promoter for any type of entertainment on Gods Green Earth!

Glad to see there are still people out there who don't forget where they come from...great choice!
Not only does Vince and his volenteer group of wrestlers risk their lives overseas every year entertaining the troops, Vince also regularly donates items to local "Indy" wrestling promotions to auction at charity events all across the country.

I,m a strong believer in the actions of Mr McMahon. I meet him about 30 years ago as a wrestling fan. I went to Vietnam on 3 duties in 1967 69 and 70 the USO shows where great. But most of the people that came was looking for personal gains not for the troops. What we needed was someone who did care about us.Just ask 95%of the pro players in any sport for an autograph. I want $50.00 first. I have seen baseball players refuse to sign balls for kids because that could,t pay. Just ask Mark Prior of these stories. I saw it on quite a few times.Do I like Vince NO.Does he deserve this YES If more companys would get involved in helping our troops then we might get them home sooner. Maybe they want be called baby killers tho. Now there is no Bob Hope so I guess our troops have no hope huh

What a great choice for Sportsman of the Year. Vince and the WWE doing a wonderful job all year round. As a father of a son who served in Kuwait I applaude him and the WWE. I have been a long time fan and been to live WWE events and they are well done. I attend many Indy events in Florida as well and these wrestlers really put their lives on the line every time they go out and perform and compete since we all all human and mistakes are made and they should all be commended.

As a buisness man I already respect Mr. Mcmahon but as a Proud American I couldn't respect him more.

As a independent wrestler in Ohio and a Veteran of the Army I always applaud WWE going to Iraq.... the tribute for the troops is a great morale boost desperately needed in these hard times... Although people may not agree with WWE programming, The humanitarian efforts of the WWE are extraordinary... SI, I demand you give Vince not only the award but coverage as well to show YOUR support for the troops..

I agree Vince and the WWE do much for our troops. I am glad that they do this every year and thank you JBL for thinking this idea up!
Posted: 11:30 AM   by Anonymous
I have been a long time pro wrestling fan and I love what World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE for those who dont know the acronim) have done for the troops the last 4 or 5 years. Great Pick SI. They deserve it a whole lot, especially around the holidays when they can't be with their family. Yes, Vince is an EXTREMELY controversial character on TV, but in real life, he is a very kind man who is easy to get along with (I have met him twice, My cousin wrestles for him).

Dont trash McMahon just because he is a wrestling promoter. Dont base the award on whether pro wrestlers are athletes (as an indy wrestler myself, I know I spend more time in the gym than NASCAR drivers & PGA Golfers). Pro wrestlers are athletes, and the PT Barnum of pro wrestling is a unique and deserving selection for this award.
Posted: 12:23 PM   by Anonymous
This is a great event that the WWE does every year. For those of you who think the Idea of giving Vince McMahon this award is absurd...I invite you to watch the WWE Show when they show the Trip to see the troops on TV. The young men and women of our armed forces would think this is a great idea. The have such a great time and the wrestlers are even more honored to be there. Mr. McMahon.....Your are the Sportsman of the Year! Thank you.......signed a proud father of a son in Iraq.
Posted: 12:24 PM   by Anonymous
I'm sure what Vince and the WWE is doing for the troops is wonderful, and appreciated, but I am hard pressed to advocate giving this award to a man and an organization that glorifies the beating and mistreatment of women, exposes our children to near pornographic images, and promotes violence to an all too violent american society.
Posted: 12:34 PM   by Anonymous
Yes, many may not consider wrestling a sport, and the WWE corporation is a money driven corporation, but it is time that they are being recognized for all the charitable things they do, not just for our soilders in Iraq, but also at home for all these children foundations and underpriveledged Americans here as well. I say that this award should not just go to Mr. McMahon, but all the wrestlers who put in the charitable time and effort.
Posted: 12:46 PM   by Anonymous
The people whom vote for this, will exclude the WWE. What the WWE does for the troops is something everybody appreciates. It's the one WWE TV program that I would never miss. The WWE does go over there and they do it for the troops. But, my guess is that the Sports Person of the year will be Roger Federer.

I could not agree more. I served a year tour in Afganistan and was lucky enough to be able to see them when then came there. It was an amazing time, and was a great escape from what was otherwise a LONG and miserable year. Thank you for recognizing Mr. McMahon, and the whole WWE organization!

I am a life long wrestling fan and I could not agree more. To often I hear people tell me that wrestling is nothing but garbage. So does that mean taking time out of a 52 week non-stop schedule to go to a hostile enviorment to entertain people who deserve to be entertained more then anyone else here in America garbage? I think not.

No other sports organization or team takes this much time out of their schedule to go over to such an unstable situation to say thank you.

Will Vince and the WWE win this award... no they wont. Are they deffinetly the most deserving... without a shadow of a doubt.

As a parent of a terminally ill child i can only say "ITS WELL DESERVED" maybe a lot of people dont know about Vince Mcmahon except what you see on TV but he has done more than ANY sports team or personality.Bringing a lifetime of joy not only to our troops but to our own children dying in the USA EVERY DAY.The man should recieve every acolade for being a true sportsman AND HUMANITARIAN.!
Posted: 1:59 PM   by Anonymous
It is about time Vince McMahon and his wrestlers are recognized for what they do every year for our troops. No other sports franchise or athlete in America spends five days of quality time with our troops to show their appreciation and let them know they are not forgotten about. All athletes and team owners should take a page out of Mr. McMahons book, by opening their hearts and not just the checkbook. GO VINCE
Posted: 2:45 PM   by Anonymous
Its about time that Vince Mcmahon was honoured by the mainstream media although I think he should be honoured by other media organizations, he is a great man, and he takes some stick from the media who portray the WWE as not a sport, well let me tell you it is, these men and women give their time for free, they give tirelessly to charities without any publicity at all and they have to be commended for it....Vince for prez anyone?
Posted: 3:04 PM   by Anonymous
I agree completly. As a wrestler myself, and someone who's family is enriched in Military tradition, i think McMahon is doing a good thing for the troops. God bless America and the WWE for this. And More Importantly God Bless the Troops

It's great to recognize Vince for all he does for the troops, but he should not be recognized by SI as Sportsman of the Year. Maybe Entertainment Weekly could recognize him, and all his wrestlers that go to Iraq. It is a great thing.

Vince will be the first to tell you he is in the entertainment business, just like he told a court( I forget where)so he would not have to be sanctioned by an athletic commission. His talent are both great athletes. I couldn't do to my body what these guys due to theirs every night. Heck, the NFL only plays once a week, six months a year, so their bodies can recover. These guys do it 4-5 times a week, 52 weeks a year. This is atlhetic, SCRIPTED entertainment, an athletic soap opera. It is about the farthest escape from reality I can find, and that's why I love it. It's funny, witty, crude, trashy, and that's why people watch it. But sports, it's not.

I want to second the point that the WWE doesn't limit their support of our troops to the 5-day "Tribute" - and it should be noted that travelling WWE Superstars, the staff, and Vince McMahon himself do not receive special accomidations during this tour. They sleep on cots & eat military rations just like any of the troops they are visiting. They make a point to show the troops that, despite their public celebrity, they are no more worthy of better accomidations than the troops defending them are.

As someone has mentioned, the WWE offers reduced (and many times free) admission to their live events, including their pay-per-view megashows that are one of the major revenue generators for the company. They don't limit that to those who can attended the PPVs either -- on many occasions they have offered free broadcasts of these events to all of the troops. I've also read several storys that state that a military groups can contact WWE & request a free broadcast of a PPV for a group viewing .

When I turn on their flagship broadcast, Monday Night RAW, each week the cameras always find a pocket of troops in uniform, having a grand time. Knowing those troops are there as guests instead of as paying customers is just one of many reasons that Vince McMahon is a canidate for Sportsman of the Year.
Posted: 3:21 PM   by Anonymous
It's just nice to see positive reviews about the WWE as opposed to negative ones. Think about how many athletes that "give". It's mainly for tax or publicity purposes. Vince and let's not forget John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) are the ones to bring this to fruition. Thanks for entertaining the troops! (and I'm Canadian!)

Congrats to vince McMahon... i think its amazing the things that Vince and the rest of World Wrestling Entertainment do not only in but outside the squared cirlce as well!!! I have heard many stories about the great things that Mr. McMahon and WWE do every year for diferent groups (eg. Make- A- Wish)! And i think there isn't a more deserving man for this nomination than Vince McMahon. I also agree that it's about time that someone look past all of the negative things that the media have said about Mr. McMahon and his company, and look at all generosity he has shown! And as a huge WWE fan i may not always agree with some of the things they do, but like the title of WWE's new book reads " Controversy Creates Cash"!!!!! Congrats again Mr. McMahon and GOD BLESS

As A female serving overseas I met Mr McMahon and he is quite simply the most generous human being on the planet. He didnt have to come over here but he did anyway and trust me, the troops never forgot it. It sure helped throughout the holidays

Posted: 4:08 PM   by Anonymous
i couldnt agree more as a long time wwe fan. the wwe has always been very supportive of the troops from offering free pay per views and visits to the middle east. vince mcmahon has made wwe not only a wrestling program but also a american pastime even when hulk hogan would wave the flag or by showing the wwe as a family such as deathes vince mcmahon organizes a special for a superstar that has died. vince mcmahon is a american icon as well as a very patriotic person, besides vince has been doing this for years and never has gotten reconginiton so if anyone desrves this its vince mcmahon.

S.I. Finnallly gets it right when it comes to the WWE. I have been a fan sense childhood, they (the wrestlers) were doing these shows for the troops BEFORE the mainstream media notied anything at all.
Great choice for sportsman of the year. hope Vince gets it.

Vince Mcmahon the sportsman of the year? Your damn right this is the best choice for SOY since Jackie Robinson. The things he does to cheer up the troops is great. Mr Mcmahon also donates alot of money to charity. Dont believe what you've heard about him. He's very active in the make-a-wish foundation as well as Ronald McDonald foundation and national teen read week and thats just since early October. Best of luck to you Vince you deserve it.

Mr Mcmahon may not be a great man, but he and by extention his company risks a lot to go to the warzone and what do they ask in return? nothing. He is very deserving of this accolade and so many more for what he does in regards to charitable\humanitarian work. Well done Vince Mcmahon!

By far the best choice for Sportsman of the Year. I don't watch the programming but what Vince and WWE does for the troops is going above and beyond of what everybody else has done for them.
Posted: 8:17 PM   by Anonymous
Very well done Mr. Gray, I am a WWE fan, and I always find the Tribute to the Troops one of the best shows of the year. The troops are loving being able to see the Superstars, and even though they may be half the world away they know who's heel (bad guy) and who's face (good guy), and boo and cheer respectively for them. The troops aren't the only ones who enjoy the show though, the Superstars themselves seem to always give more for this show, because they know how much it means for the troops. Past winners, with the exception of Lance Armstrong, have really ever done this much for one group outside their fans.

I know wrestling isn't a sport, it's sports entertainment, but that doesn't mean they can't have someone honored as the Sportsman of the Year. Yes wrestling is fake, but I would love to see any athlete in any sport do what they do, or better yet, see a team owner, like Steinbrenner (sp?), do what their employes do. Vince McMahon will compete in the ring from time to time. Even though wrestling is fake the moves still hurt, me and my friends have fun and do it from time to time, and let me tell you we are sore following it. How about asking any athlete you interview if they would be willing to have someone hit them with a steel chair across the back, slammed through a table, or knocked off of a ladder, bet you won't find many takers on that, yet wrestlers do things like that for there job. Better yet ask them if they want to be put in Oylmpic gold-medalist Kurt Angle's ankle lock, or also ask him if professional wrestling is all fake, or if one is at risk of injury at all times?

I am happy to finally see that an outlet of the popular media has put forth one of the MANY postive aspects of the sports-entertainment industry. Is Mr. McMahon deserving of the Sportsman Of The Year Award, absolutely. I would go advise this media outlet and other media outlets to venture further in the realm of World Wrestling Entertainment. I think that the masses would be astonished to find that the Tribute to the Troops isn't the only good deed that the WWE does in any given year. Visiting troops at hospitals and military bases, SmackDown! Your Vote, Boys & Girls Club, Wrestlemania Reading Challenge, Make-A-Wish Foundation (which Mr. McMahon and his wife are national board members), various fundraisers, and being a stable philantrophic organization...the WWE does a world of GOOD. Lets make this the first step to combating the negative exposure that the WWE receives and show the country that what goes on in the squared circle isn't just about sport. It's not just about entertainment. It's not just about controversy to create cash. It's about a piece of the fabric of Americana that is being spread to warm the hearts and souls of much more than the people who buy a ticket to a WWE event.

I've been a fan of the WWE (and its forerunner, WWF) ever since my father started taking me to live 'house shows' (aka, non televised events) when I was less than 10 y/o. Over the years (I'm now in my early 30s), I've watched many of Vince McMahon's TV programs on a regular basis, as well as having ordered some of the PPVs, and even been to a couple more house shows as an adult. To see the mainstream sports media recognize Vince is spot on deserving, and I'm glad to see that someone did so. While some can argue about the content of the programming that WWE produces, when you consider that its, first and foremost, entertainment, and secondly, the company has independent contractors who are very fine athletes, I don't see why McMahon could not win a "Sportsman of the Year" award. WWE isn't the NBA, NFL, MLB, the PGA, or NASCAR, but its not all fake, and what these folks do every year for our well deserving troops SHOULD be commended. Kudos again, and may GOD BLESS each & every man & woman who serve our homeland overseas. (sj-OH)

Its about time. Vince McMahon as done. So much for the wrestling world. But i have to said as a life WWE fan. Vince as done a wonderful job the past few years bring the wrestlers over to Iraqi to put on a show for the troops. Every year me and my famliy watch it together. And waching this show every year makes me so pround to an american. Big Kudos to Vince McMahon and you guys for having the balls to gave this to him,

I am glad that Vince got this award and I hope tribute to the troops will be a great show to watch and enjoy. I do enjoy wrestling from the past from 1985 to 2006 and I still watch it. So let hope it a good show for america!!!

Who better than Mr. McMahon. There is something that EVERYONE should realize as well when it comes to Vince. Vince not only cares about the troops, he cares for his employees. If you dig deep into the lives of a few wrestlers you will see how much he cares for them as well. Eddie, Hardy, Regal, just to name a few fell on hard times while working for WWE. Vince gave them all another shot at doing what they love when other ' sports ' organizations would have turned their back and walked away. Vince didnt need them for the money, hell he is enough of it, not for business cause they could have gotten other wrestlers and have, but he did it out of the kindness of his heart and he gives second chances to people who have made mistakes. There is more to Vince then meets the eye, Maybe someday S.I. or the WWE even, will make a ' TRUE LIFE ' piece of Vince and mention ALL that he has done, and not just what you see on TV with his butt out or going to see the soldiers. The soldiers are most important show throughout the year, but people can really learn alot about mcmahon if they just took the time like gary has and learned.

its about time vince gets the credit he deserves and i really hope he wins this because he deserves it, you don't hear about the wrestlers holding out for money or falling asleep in team meetings because they feel underused. no every year they are out there bringing a little bit of america to our troops the same troops who fight so these over paid football, baseball and basketball stars can sleep safe at night. you go vince if anyone deserves this you do. My brother was there for the first tour and since both of us have been fans since we were kids trust me it was great for him.

I was a soldier with the 278th RCT out of Tennessee when the WWE came through my small FOB near Samarra in December 2004. I was able to have in depth conversations with Mick Foley and Lillian Garcia. Two class acts in my book. The entire WWE organization deserves this award. REGULATORS...MOUNT UP!!!
Posted: 11:21 PM   by Anonymous
I personally met Mr. McMahon, & he really is a nice guy. The tribute to the troops is proof of that. I mean to put this as more important than WrestleMania? Wow. That means he cares about the troops before his Mulimillon dollar creation. Vice may be a "bad guy" on it but its entertainment. Vince has my vote.
Posted: 11:24 PM   by Anonymous
You know on the show he acts like he aint nice but deep down inside he really is nice. he cares about our troops over seas and he wants them to know we are behind them. i thank him for that!

Finally Vince and the rest of WWE are getting the respect they deserve... for years being a wrestling fan has been taboo well I tell you I am proud to say I am a wrestling fan even though I dont agree with some of the storylines, you know I never hear anybody give any crap to people like T.O and Mike Vick about the stuff they do on live tv with every kid watching with their dads... but let some guy say suck it on tv and all hell breaks loose. What WWE does for the troops for free is better than any professional athlete does and has to be paid for. Kudo Vince and WWE!!!!!!!!
Posted: 12:25 AM   by Cliff Maness
Our troops are fighting a war no one wants because they are good soldiers and follow orders. Vince McMahon and World Wrestling Entertainment are able to be what they are because of the sacrifices that our troops over for over 200 years have fought and died to guarantee those freedoms. I think that we here at home do not say thank you enough to ours soldiers for the sacrifice they make and at the same time, Vince and the WWE are not thanked enough for the effort to let our troops know that they are not forgotten, but very much in our hearts and prayers. Thank you Vince and thank you WWE.
Vince deserves honor for what he do for our soldiers but he should also plan for our soldiers in Afghanistan.

Many knows that vince in ring is just a character of wwe but at backstage he is the director of whole drama and the man gives who deserves (do not listen kurt)
Posted: 4:54 AM   by Anonymous
McMahon is the clear choice for Sportsman of the Year, especially when selecting from this list. He is heads and shoulders above everyone else in demonstrating the true value of sports in this world. (some would say the WWE is sports entertainment, but isn't sports just a specific type of entertainment anyway?) And besides, if one does not think Vince is an athlete, one only needs to look at his preformance at this years Unforgiven PPV. Simply amazing what this near-senior citizen can still do in the ring.
Posted: 9:44 AM   by Anonymous
Wonderful choice. I don't think there is another sports figure who does as much for charity. For those who might scoff and say he is only doing this for the good publicity, look at what he does for other charities, esp. the Make-A-Wish Foundation. You should have more respect for someone who will give to others quietly than those who give and then brag to everyone who will listen.

Hats Off to WWE and Chairman McMahon. As a long time Professional Wrestling fan (to include a history of NWA, AWA, WCW & some who may remember WWF & WWWF) no promoter of any of the aforementioned wrestling organizations even to include Vince's father, have ever given to charities like Vince Jr. has. Not only the WWE Middle East tour our American Troops receive every holiday season, but for other voluntary non-paid appearances WWE has done. WWE Voting program, Make a Wish Foundation, Literacy Program (Vince's wife Linda has organized), Visits to various Hospitals for those with terminal diseases or military soldiers who have lost limbs defending American Freedom overseas, as well as generous donations WWE has given (Hurricane Katrina). No other Professional Sports Organization whether it be entertainment or competitive have given back this much for America. Vincent K. McMahon SI Sportsman of the Year!!
Posted: 12:09 PM   by Anonymous
This man definately gets my vote... somebody can not point fingers at the president and just do what is right because they love their country
Posted: 1:24 PM   by Anonymous
As a life long WWF & WWE fan, I think that it's great that Vince & the superstars are possibly being recognized for what they do for our troops during the holiday season.
To those critics who say that sports entertainment isn't a sport and that he shouldn't get the award because of that, you try getting in the ring with one of those guys and see how well you do! And, women in skimpy bathing suits isn't a sport either, but you'd sure be unhappy if SI stopped doing their bathing suit issue.
The WWE and it's employees do many wonderful charitable things throughout the course of the year. For our sick kids, for our troops, for those who can't read. You don't have to support sports entertainment in order to support the man and his wonderful employees that give so much back to the communities both here and around the world.

I think what Vince is doing for the troops is amazing! I respect him for making time and all of the wrestlers for taking time out of their schedules to give something back to the people who deserve it most! Congratulations Vince!

I read your comments to today regarding Vince. Very interesting, clean, honest from the heart. And very true. I agree whole hardily. As a former Naval Man I can relate. In regard to Vince. That is a bit of a story. I am forty eight Husband Father Working Man Veteran. I have also been a fan of wrestling since Vince was an announcer with the Antonio Rocca, in the days of Gorilla Monsoon, Bruno, Captain Lou, Grand wizard, Samoans, etc and except for when I was in boot camp in the land of the Great Lakes
And some matches when we were on a cruise and didn't get the video tapes they sent. I have not missed WWF WWE, I also rarely miss
I use to also watch wcw, awa, nwa, Went to matches at Madison Square Garden and Scope, also Florida,
I am almost a Grand Master Fan. I have to attend a Wrestlemania.

Regarding Vince, He is the Barnum and Bailey of this century. He harnesses the energy of a host of individuals. He attempts and many times succeeds in providing entertainment his way. He took something that was intended for him from is father and then went to find and provide some of the best show out their story line, Male comics soap opera, the best of the business. Creating a standard of the business. A Very Good standard in professional wrestling. The Best.
Allot of people don't know and wouldn't know unless your an avid reader of some of the prowrestling sites like I do. Vince's biggest difficulty on going on the show is everyone wants to go. I think that says allot about the organization. And just so you know these people wrestlers trainers crew staff all have been working about the last 350 days putting on shows all over already from Europe, Canada, Japan, India Canada Mexico etc. Some are hurting badly a need a long rest. Some should be with family, Vince is a new Grand Daddy, and Christmas with family all around would be nice. But we as an organization feel the need to go and support of Troops overseas.
All of the individuals involved with should be saluted. And I do.
I also wish you all a good holiday wherever you’re at our prayers too.

Now this is just my opinion
And I can only say that in all that time I have learned allot about wrestling much more than most. I think combined with my military background and training and yes they said I was a bit over zealous. I am also 6'5 Tattooed ugly 200 and too much definitely starting a diet next year. I am also a little crazy too.
If you don't like my opinion get in the ring. And after I kick your butt and make you submit. I'll salute them in the rings and send them off our prayers.
To all the WWE I salute you and thank you.
To Vince McMahon. An individual who succeeds at putting on a great show consistently.
All the other sports can do what they feel is adequate.
Vince, His Family and Organization are Winners no what a magazine says or doesn't say.

Theses people do something a bit different they work to put on a consistent form of entertainment.
They get their butts up every morning and night. Travel here there and everywhere. Sacrificing a great deal. To entertain.
Yep
I think your right.
Vince should be Sportsman of the year.

Any problems with that hit me up and we can find a ring to play in.

I am delighted to see Vince getting the recognition for this , But all the Guys and Gals who work for Vince , deserve some credit. My Brother served in Iraq a year and a half ago. I know how it felt for us , seeing him gone , But it is great to see The WWE , do something for our troops , and not expect anything in return. Thanks Vince !

As a former Solider in the Army and former pro wrestler, there is no one more deserving than Mr. Vincent K. McMahon. This country is about history, remembrance, love & compassion. He represents a truly & loyal professional, the sportsman award should be about someone that shows this type of dedication to our troops. He makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck just thinking about the countless hours & we need to remember the wrestlers that travel with him as well....I want to say: thank you Mr. McMahon, Carry on Sir!!!

As a Service Member who has been to both Iraq and Afghanistan over the last 3 years, I think this is a great choice. I got to meet some of the wrestlers in Afghanistan, and they couldn't have been better people. I hope Mr. McMahon receives this award on the behalf of all the wrestlers who participated, many of whom had personal issues back home that they put aside for us.

I could scarcely believe my eyes when I read the nomination story. What a grand idea for someone so very deserving. For all it's toughness - and there is plenty - the stars of the WWE and Vince McMahon are earthy and generous with their time and especially their talents when they tour the war zones and military installations.

As a dad who's had one son see them in Iraq and two others now deployed and likely to see them, I say thanks Vince and company - you are the Sportsman of the Year and the Sports Team of the Year in my book!

Thanks for remembering you're citizens of this free land and for simply giving back a little. Its means so much to our Service members...and their families.

Vince McMahon as Sportsman of the Year. What an idea. He is as deserving a person as anyone could be. What he does in reaching out to our GIs is outstanding. Regarding the well known discussion about wrestling: 1) wrestling athletes are among the best conditioned and dynamic - their season is year around; 2) they take pride in their craft and sport. One other comment, wrestling is one of the few 'sports' where the 'millionaire' participants don't drop a ball, miss a play, throw an interception, measure their success in the fact they hit every third or fourth ball - thus missing the majority that come flying by them, or have a kick go wide right or left. They don't wear pads and helmets and don't see their opponents receive 15 yard uneccessary roughness penalities. For such a rough and tumble bunch, they've got hearts as big as our country. Thanks for being such good sports. Thanks, Vince, for what you do for our country.

Thank you, Andy Gray, for choosing Vince McMahon. I get alot of crap for being a wrestling fan, but I put up with it. You don't have to like wrestling, heck, I don't like some of the storylines at times, but you have to appreciate some of the things these guys do day to day. Alot of people won't even do that. Your reason for choosing him was great, and I hope everyone else can be a little more opened minded also. Have a nice day.

Great call! I'm a huge WWE fan and even i didn't think of McMahon. Those wrestlers are doing a great thing, and so it could also go to the WWE as a whole. But since it's sportsman, the person mostly responsible is VKM.

I also agree that Vince is a great pick for Sportsman of the year.

it was about time someone recognized the hard work put by Vince McMahon and the WWE! I cant think of anyone better than him to receive such an important award.

I couldn't agree more. Its about time that Vince McMahon and the WWE get some sort of recognition for their tribute to the troops. No other sports organization does this. I have the utmost respect for Mr. McMahon.

P.S. I can't wait for
WrestleMania 23.

How could you not have him on the cover, first of all he's doing a great thing for soldiers and if you forgot he made his own football league the XFL.

Last year I had the opportuniyt to see this event firsthand, as I was stationed in Iraq with my National Guard unit. People may or may not like wrestling, believe it is real or fake, or even be enterttained by the antics of it all. But it is enteretainment and it is no diffrent than any soap opera or prime time show that captivates America: it is just entertainment. Mr. McMahon is doing a great thing for the troops and the moral "over there" and does more. the Armed Forces Network (AFN), a group of television stations aired overseas for deployed troops, and american military families stationed overseas, get to enjoy all of the WWE programming, and Pay per View events, at no charge. The WWE, and Vincent McMahon have my vote!!!

Yes. I agree. People may say Vince isnt deserving because what professional wrestlers do isnt "Real".But they train and travel more and work harder than any other sports person I can think of. Plus, they work on the entertainment part alot more than in the past (storylines - call it acting). What Actors do, on the whole, isnt as real as what pro wrestlers do on a daily basis, but still get more recognition. Professional wrestling and professional wrestlers everywhere should be recognised for what they do every day.

I think you are on the right track and someone said this in a comment already but why not give sportsman of the year to all of the WWE. The wrestlers go voluntarily along with Vince and other employees. I think they are all deserving of this award and the company as a whole should be recognized for the effort to help the soldiers, airman, marines and seaman who are away from home and families during the holidays. It might not be alot but it means alot to the troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan. God Bless our troops!
