First Quarter Iverson doesn't start. With Marcus Camby sidelined with a broken finger, the Nuggets field a lineup of Nene at center, Earl Boykins and Yakhouba Diawara at guards, along with Eduardo Najera and Linas Kleiza at the forwards. Well, at least five countries are represented. Iverson can be seen on the Nuggets sideline getting a tutorial on the Denver offense from assistant coach Mike Dunlap (who sort of looks like Mark Metcalf). Ron Artest is still out for the Kings with his sore knees, but rest assured -- somewhere, somehow, he's heckling Mike Bibby. The Denver crowd unleashes a huge standing ovation at the 3:25 mark as Reggie Evans rips off his warm-ups and makes his way onto the court. A.I. also enters. Iverson touches the ball for the first time at the 3:11 mark of the first quarter, and fires a bounce pass in transition to Evans. He'll learn. The first Iverson/Boykins Dribble-O-Thon takes place with two minutes to go in the first, as they manage to keep the ball in their hands for all but three of 24 seconds in a fruitless possession. A TV timeout soon after allows George Karl to run his first play for A.I. -- a screen and roll with Kleiza that ends with Allen nailing a 15-footer in the lane. A.I. finishes the first quarter with four points, making both his field goals; but he's obviously looking to pass first, and Allen's quite winded after playing eight and a half minutes. Second Quarter Iverson spends the break discussing court spacing with Boykins, but he barely gets off the ground for his first shot of the quarter, a three-pointer from the left corner, which is blocked by Quincy Douby. He misses his first two free throws as a Nugget before notching his first assist on a two-handed transition pass to Diawara for a lay-in. The Kings have been running a zone for most of the quarter, and A.I. kept finding open pockets in the lane to drive into, but he's not looking for his shot enough. Iverson brings the crowd to his feet after penetrating the zone with a nifty misdirection and crossover dribble (nifty, I say!); driving left and finishing right off the glass for his fifth and sixth points. He follows it up with a gorgeous lob pass on the next possession to DerMarr Johnson for a dunk. Reminds of when Larry Brown used to call plays for A.I. to hit Larry Hughes or Jumaine Jones with the same pass. I wonder if Karl and Brown ever get together. You know: talk shop, pick each other's brains. Sacramento ends the first half up 52-45. The Nuggets aren't out of sync; the team just isn't that great. The second unit, which starts, isn't starting caliber. Also, they've been unlucky with tip-ins and open jumpers. Klieza and Najera combine to miss 10 of 11 shots in the half, all seemingly on short chippies and missed three-pointers. A.I. isn't dominating the ball, and it isn't if his new teammates look unsure of what to do when he's out there -- they're making the right cuts and missing tons of shots ... 32 percent shooting in the first half for Denver; Iverson plays 15 minutes, scores seven points on 3 of 4 shooting, and has three assists. Had the Nuggets made their open shots, he could have finished the half with seven or eight dimes. The bulk of Sacramento's lead is built on transition buckets off of missed shots. Third Quarter Karl more or less dumps the pretense, and starts A.I. in the second half. The Nuggets have obviously worked on some zone-busting plays over halftime, but they're just as dependent on role players like Nene and Najera nailing looks close to the basket. Luckily for Denver, the shots are starting to fall. Iverson hits two early-possession three-pointers late in the third quarter to give Denver its first lead at 69-67, and the crowd is clearly enjoying themselves. Unable to score off of Denver's long misses, Sacramento slows down a bit, but their half-court offense is picking up. Iverson scores 12 in the period, and the Nuggets are +11 in the quarter, up 77-74. Fourth Quarter The Nuggets return to bobbling Iverson's passes, unable to do anything with the easy looks. But by now the Kings are starting to miss some easy shots around the rim, as well as short-arming free throws. Playing on the back end of a back-to-back, Sacramento is starting to wear down. Nuggets color man Scott Hastings is at his petulant best, needlessly calling out referee Luis Grillo for not calling the game to Hastings' specifications. Iverson, even with the game on the line, is not straying for his modus operandi: he's looking to find cutters and find the open man, in spite of all the missed lay-ins and jumpers. The zone continues to bother Denver, the team isn't playing out of control, and it just doesn't have the talent around Iverson to do much in the face of the Kings defense. Any time a good pass (usually from Iverson) found someone for an open look, chances are the shot wasn't going in. And we're talking layups. We're talking Nene. He makes $10 million a year, and he misses layups. Meanwhile, the Kings are moving the ball, catching the Nuggets on its heels as they scurry back after long rebound misses, and Sacramento found its second wind along with its touch from the outside. Story of the game: Sacramento hit its open shots, Denver did not. And in case you didn't notice it during the course of this breakdown, Iverson didn't take a single rest after sitting for the game's first 8:35. Though his legs didn't have the same spring we saw in Philadelphia, he didn't seem winded (save for a slow start); even in the face of a hectic week, thin air, and Denver's ultra-fast pace. This won't last, obviously Iverson was working off of adrenaline -- but it was remarkable to watch as the game droned on. Ruminations Final line: 39 minutes, 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting, 10 assists, 2 turnovers. Iverson missed 4 of 6 from the line, but hit two of his three long-range attempts. Allen's obviously torn. You don't just waltz into somebody's arena and start chucking up shots; but if he doesn't start dropping 30 soon, the Nuggets are in trouble. And yet, you have to admire his insistence on trying to find the open man. He had 10 assists tonight, but could have had twice as many. Outside of Iverson's field goals, Denver shot 32.9 percent. Still, if A.I. can learn to win with these guys, and be Denver's playmaker when Karl goes to his bench, this team can turn into something special. Just imagine Carmelo Anthony leading things off, finishing the game, while Iverson and his bench cronies extend the lead midway through the second quarter and early in the fourth. Iverson just had a two week vacation, and he doesn't like to be taken out of games anyway, so why not ride him? Still, the role players have to hit shots, inside and out, for Denver to circle the wagons during Anthony's 15-game suspension. So what do you think? Are the Nuggets going to fall flat on their faces before Anthony comes back? Or is just a temporary blip on the way to the Finals? Comments:A.I is "the answer" after all he's been thruogh and first time with new guys they only loose by 5 point and obviously he's not in his element yet. I am from L.A and i love the lakers but the thought of what A.I is about to unlease just makes me support the Nuggets, Like it or not...Camelo just has to live, admire and watch A.I to learn...The weather might be bad but A.I for X-mas... who doesn't love that.
yeah Iverson leading the bench while Carmelo leads and finishes the game looks like the best way to get the most out of this Situation, while the team gels and learns to play together. I hope for Iverson sake that this whole trade thing works out.
It'll take some time to build chemistry. Furthermore, Melo and Smith being out does not help. But I think the Nuggets will sneak ino the playoffs and should get things going by this post-season. We may not win the whole thing this year, but I think, if we can keep A.I. for some time, that we have a great chance in the next two to three years to win a championship.
Jaime - The Rocky Mountains I think you need your copy editors to fix the headlines for the front page. "Adjustment Issues"? It sounds like based on your write up that Iverson played spectacular and the Nuggets reserves (as a result of Camby, Smith, and Melo being out) just plain stunk up the joint.
Despite the bad hype, AI is a team player. He can get his teammates involved. He takes alot of slack for shooting too much in Philly, but who the heck did he have to pass too? Eric Snow? Samuel Dalembert? Give AI some time and he'll come up with the "Answers" the Nuggets need. Just wait until J.R. and CarYellow to come back and they'll be in the top 3 in the Western Conference.
Allen Iverson is a Superstar. He'll get his championship this year since most of the nuggets play defense and hes got someone else in Carmelo to score a bit too. One of the most underappreciated players is going to get his recognition at the seasons end. Iverson for MVP.
It's hard to tell right now.
Obviously, we can't judge how good the team will be right now because 3 of their starters out. But for the next dozen games or so, the Nuggets definitely will struggle. Struggle with the lack of firepower. Iverson will struggle as he wiggles his way into the Denver offense. And the rest of the players will struggle adapting to Iverson's game. POTENTIALLY, they can go deep into the playoffs. They have one of the game's best offensive players, both scoring- and passing-wise. Not to mention a rising star not far behind in talent in Carmelo. They have a strong inside defender in Camby, who is also a reliable scorer in the inside...on occasion. Add in J.R. Smith, Boykins, and Najera as the supporting cast, and the Nuggets are looking awfully dangerous... ...POTENTIALLY, that is. Ok, his first game was not a win, but boy when AI got in the game was he fun to watch! Imagine what he will do with J.R. Smith, Camby, and Carmelo playing beside him. Those four plus Nene will be so tough. I just wish that we didn't have to wait a month to see them all together. He actually made Boykins better, and that is no easy task.
This game was a totally winnable game for the Carmelo-less Nuggets. If AI isn't playing this game they lose by at least 15. You could just see the guys playing harder when Iverson got in the game. I just can't wait to see when this team has Melo, Camby, and even K-Mart. Watch Out!

I thought he played well, and if Denver's "B" team had played good, they would have won. It's unfair to be citical of his performance as three Denver starters (Melo, JR & Camby) are all out... coupled with zippo practice time, he played well and made a good impression on the fans there.
Look for big things out of AI in Denver... now if only their other guards (especially Boykins) would learn to shoot over 30% they might have a shot to win some games. Next game, AI drops 35+ Losing Camby for two weeks really hurts this team.... Though the Nugs didn't win. You can't blame it on AI. You have to admire the guy's willingness to pass and find guys. He surprised me as I expected him to dominate the ball. But if he continues this 25 PPG and 10 APG effort that he put here, imagine when Melo comes back to but on 30 PPG again. That's already 55+ points when you log in the points from the assists as well! Put in a good center like Marcus Camby and good bench Earl Boykins, Najera and JR Smith and this team is definitely one to watch!
Dyer,
do you not understand that AI is better than Melo? maybe it should be Anthony leading "the bench cronies" as its now Iverson's team. Losing Camby hurts; we need his rebounding and defense. But i cant wait to see how we are going to look in march and April once we've meshed. All we need to do is sneak into the playoffs. Then watch out!
Jaime - The Rocky Mountains just wait.... when he starts skipping practice and complaining about the offense, you'll think back on this past game as the golden era. He'll break your heart eventually too.
Why not run every play for AI, with that lineup that likely couldn't win in the WNBA, it'a a miracle they were even close. Let AI score 50 a game till Melo Tyson returns.
AI is a top 10 talent in the NBA. Do they have enough defense to win it all, I don't know...But they will be good.
What has to be realized here is that Iverson was literally rushed onto the court after a long flight into a city he's just getting used to and a team he's never practiced with. Of course there's going to be some discomfort. If you had to transfer to something new and ordered to adjust right away, there's some things you would miss.
Iverson will be a huge part of the Nuggets soon enough. It just takes time to fit into a certain part of the team. And let's face it, the Kings had a huge game last night. No denying that. I think Allen Iverson is a good point guard and with most of Denver's starting players either injured or suspended this game is just like the sixers team. You know your team is bad if your point guard can dish out a lot of assists and he is also your lead scorer. That can only mean one thing the rest of the team are poor in finishing the play. I think the Nuggets will go deep in the playoffs this year and perhaps win a championship.
A.I. does not get winded. He has a freakish amount of energy. With the "B" team playing, Karl should play him all 48 minutes.
What's wrong with Ron-Ron ?? Get your head right Ron. You need Bibby to win ballgames...
AI are THE answer for Nuggets. Now they have two major scores, and a pair of rebounding and defending big-men.... Let's see..no Camby, no Anthony, no Martin, no Smith and still a close game...not too shabby
The keys to this team will be the play of Najera, Nene and Camby. With Smith, Mello and A.I. either chucking up shots from every conceivable angle, slamming mind-boggling back-door alley-oops, firing pinpoint passes out of the double team (or running teams out of the the Pepsi Center, period!) Najera, Nene and Camby will be setting headache inducing back-picks, getting tons of garbage points, layups out of those double team passes and rebounds galore... Defense? Who needs defense when your home court is a mile above sea level? Once A.I. gets his wind back, there won't be a player in the league that will be able to keep up with these pituitary jackrabbits at altitude. 75% home winning record and 55% on the road. Holy Skyline Jerseys! Are we looking at 54 to 58 wins next year???
wow, you can see the potential that this team has. Especially once Melo,Smith, and Camby get back. This was a winnable game A.I. will get going and carry this team until everyone returns. now if only the bench players can play well.
