Don't expect Bulls to go quietly

Posted by Kelly Dwyer
Those who think the Miami Heat turned a corner in their Game 5 win can't be faulted. Pat Riley's crew probably played their best 48 minutes of defense all season; they managed to overcome injury, foul issues, and a pesky bunch of Chicago Bulls on their way to a superficially convincing 14-point win. They're up 3-2 in the series, James Posey is playing his best basketball of the season, Antoine Walker is determined to act like a franchise talent (with dubious results), and Gary Payton was hitting clutch baskets all throughout the fourth quarter of Tuesday's win.

Marvy, fab, top gear, and all that -- I just ain't buying the about face. This team is not out of the woods, they're in for a huge struggle to just close out this series with Chicago, and Miami has yet to stumble onto any form of chemistry they can bank on.

And I'm not talking about the Dwyane Wade/Payton/Walker yammering. That sort of silliness hardly has an impact on these sorts of athletes, men who boast elephant-worthy memories when dealing with perceived disrespect from opponents, fans or team executives -- but the only time they'll stay sore at a teammate is when one happens to nick his Skin-So-Soft. I'm more interested in the consistent lack of rhythm to the Heat's offense. Too many chefs in the kitchen, not enough guys moving off the ball, nothing to bank on when the going gets rough.

Chicago blew one tonight, no foolin' there, showcasing the exact sort of bugaboos that left them with a 29-39 record with one month to play. Specifically, we're referring to too many turnovers (19), an ice-cold touch (35 percent from the floor, 25 percent from beyond the arc), and fourth quarter issues (a 31 to 17 disparity tonight). Ben Gordon, who entered the game averaging 42.3 minutes in the postseason (up from 31 in the regular season), was spent by the end of the first quarter. Each of the team's eight first half 3-point attempts spun in and out of the rim. None of the important loose balls seemed to come their way. A saint beneath the paint? Not tonight.

But just as these kids haven't the foggiest as to how to close out a playoff game they should have won, they're just as inexperienced at rolling over and letting the opposition prevail without a fight. In a postseason that has seen team after team call it quits rather than rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light, these Bulls will hardly be going gently into the sweet Chicago night come Thursday. The Bulls are too blissfully unaware of what sends these other, "veteran," teams home. They've yet to be nutted by reality, cynicism has yet to set in, so bank on a pair of exciting contests to close out what has been a brilliant first-round series.

I was surprised to find myself rooting for the Bulls tonight. Not that I don't like a good underdog, but it's still hard for me to think of them as such, even a decade removed from Michael Jordan.

But this team WANTS to win, whereas Miami merely wants to survive. I think that survival instinct will carry Miami through this series (if that eerie all-white motif in the stands doesn't do it first), but Chicago could be a dangerous foe next season if they come out firing on all cylinders.

Cheers to Scott Skiles for turning around a franchise that few others seemed willing or able to upright. I've been a fan of his since before he tackled Shaq during a practice in their Orlando Magic days, and I'd love to see him pull off one more valiant stand against the big man now.

heat fans everywhere have to be thankful that the Bulls went cold last night. One thing to note though, is that this game showed the lack of killer instinct on behalf of the Bulls that is needed to win in the playoffs. With that said, the Bulls may win game 6 in Chi-town but that will be a home court inspired win. But with Game 7 back in Miami you can't write a better storyline for D-Wade than returning from his injury to lead them to victory in Game 5 and then coming up HUGE in Game 7. I'm talking numbers like 35,7, and 7.

OK, so, let's get this straight - the reason the Bulls won't lose this series isn't because they're tougher, or deeper, or smarter. Or because they rebound better or take care of the ball more or make their FTs. Even if all of the above are true, the reason the Bulls won't lose is purely because they are so un-used to playoff basketball that they don't know when to roll over and succumb to a face-saving defeat?

Well, it's a nice idea.

For the Bulls to actually WIN this series, they need lightning to strike Shaq twice in the United Center in game 6 on Thursday, which won't happen. But even if it does happen, they'll then have to somehow find a way to win game 7, in Miami, against the refs, the fans, and Dwyane Wade.

The Bulls are winning respect, sure, but unless they prevail in the series they'll be nothing more than your stereotypical lower-seed-kicks-sand-in-the-face-of-the-big-boys temporary storyline.

Heat fans should be embarrassed at their teams performance in this series. You can just sense the bad blood that these teammates have for each other. Marv Albert making the comment about Dwayne Wade dissing ZO when ZO went for the chest bump. GP chewing everyone out, Shaq winning, Posey and Haslem's antics etc.
The Bulls are a classy team that are playing a scrappy, gutsy NCAA Tourney style in these playoffs.
the Heat are the reason why interest the league has waned. The Bulls give it some hope.

DA BULLS!!! That's right, the bulls will not leave without a fight. We may just come out on top of this one.

Walker is a franchise talent, it just isn't clear that he can ever be a franchise player at this point. And that difference is miles wide. He can move the ball, pass, shoot, score, draw fouls and has the touch - but he is also lazy, selfish, doesn't move well without the ball, has problems with fundamentals like setting screens and finding mismatches - and that means that his use on an offense is a great deal more limited than his talent would otherwise suggest.

Walker can carry a team, he just can't carry it very far.

The heat shot 17.4% from 3 and 53.7% from the line. you cant get any worse than that and yet the Heat still cruised in the win. You are just another Heat hater.

Here, here bro. It was a bad game, no doubt. But, the Bulls will win the home game and it will be a very tight game 7. The x-factors in my mind are Sweetney & Deng. If, in game 7, these two can chip in 10 and 20 points, respectively and Noc, Kirk and Ben can contribute another 60+, we will win this series. Until then, this willl be a nail-bitter of a series.

You’re counting on the Bulls inexperience to lay-down as a reason for them to force a game 7? What kind of logic is that? I agree that the Heat are not out of the woods and the series might go back to Miami. But the only team that can beat Miami is Miami. The Bulls, who are a better team then they are on paper, can’t match up with the Heat when Miami is playing well. Make no mistake Pat Riley will have those guys playing well come the next two games.

Shaq is mad, and Wade is done fooling around. The Heat defense is back, and it will suffocate the Bulls in game 6 regardless of the what the officials do. Heat win by 5 in Chi-town.

da bulls!

This first round series with the Bulls has exposed the Heat for what they really are; an old and slow team of former all-stars signed for only one last title push.

Does anyone think Shaq will be more effective next year? How about Zo, Walker, and Payton?

Once O'Neal retires, the Heat will not be title contenders for a long time.
I wonder how many driving lanes will Dwayne Wade have without the big guy in the center to draw double teams?

I'm sure the Detroit Pistons are watching this series and licking their lips.

On the flip side, the young Bulls are set for future playoff games. they have a top five draft pick coming up and the money to sign free agents. With the right moves, they could be talking title in a few short years.

I couldn't agree more. These Bulls are a fiesty bunch that play all out but lack that veteran wisdom to close out games. If they can hold on to most of their key players (Hinrich, Gordon) combined with their substantial cap room and the Knicks' first round draft pick, the future looks bright.

I thought the Bulls implemented a very creative way to rest Tyson Chandler's ankle. Hard to do much damage to a sprained joint when you pick up five fouls in six minutes. Bravo. Nobody saw that coming. Somewhere Bubba Wells is trying to find out if he can sue.
Man, i'm down w/you on this. Before the series even started, i had this one as the most even of all. And truth be told, it is. I really do think Chicago is going to win on their turf.

I know the heat have not shown their best face for the playoffs yet but i could tell you this. they will not go down so easily as well. They have showed that when they need to come thru they always do. and i believe they are going to do it this time again. Miami is too much for the bulls right now. dont get me wrong, they have a good time that are not afraid of nyting but i dont think they could challenge more the Heat than they already have. again, i dont think we have seen what Miami can do yet.

go bulls and there going to beat the heat in 7 no doubt cause this is Michael Jordan talking

At times I want to see Chi win and expose the smug Riley as over the hill and keep fools like A. Walker and J. Williams from getting to the 2nd round. Then I remember they traded Brand for Chandler! Unforgivable. Idiots. Let this franchise suffer another loss. They had their glory years.

The Bulls continue to be underestimated, I expect this series to go all seven games with the Bulls winning in seven.

hahaha Bulls fans. Did you seriously think that Miami wouldn't adjust to your game and show some new moves? Shaq decided to avoid picking up fouls and look at what happened. Domination end to end. You get your (not so easy) layups and Shaq smacks you back to earth anyway. Maybe after he retires guys.
