Dirk's a man on a mission

Dirk Nowitzki
Dirk Nowitzki scored 33 of his playoff career-high 50 points in the second half.
AP
Statistics alone cannot and should not define the superhuman postseason Dirk Nowitzki has enjoyed thus far, but they can offer us a bit of perspective as Dirk tries to lead his team to its first NBA Finals appearance. Though compatriots like Josh Howard, Jason Terry, DaSagana Diop and Devin Harris have all had their time in the sun, Dirk has absolutely carried his group from the get-go, with his play leaving teammates and opponents alike aware of the fact that Nowitzki considers this to be a pretty happenin' year.

Against Memphis, San Antonio and Phoenix, Nowitzki has looked to crush all comers -- demanding his team not be satisfied with a five or six-game win over the Grizzlies, nailing clutch shot after clutch shot against the defending champs, and taking the Suns for a 50-point, 12-rebound ride in Thursday's Game 5 win. We're watching a special player, one that won't even turn 28 until June 19th. I think it's only fitting that we pair Dirk up with the best and brightest (comparable) 28-year olds we've seen come down the pike over the last 30 years:

-- At age 28, Charles Barkley averaged about 23 and 11 in an off year, one that saw his Philadelphia 76ers miss the playoffs.

-- Boston's Larry Bird averaged nearly 29 points and a combined 17 rebounds/assists, as the Celtics lost in the NBA Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.

-- George McGinnis averaged 22.6 points and 11.4 rebounds, and the 1979 Denver Nuggets lost in the first round to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Los Angeles Lakers.

-- Joe Jackson released Night and Day, his perfect synthesis of Tin Pan Alley standards and post-Pub Rock rhapsodizing. The album produced two hit singles (Steppin' Out, and Breaking Us in Two) as well as a host of in-concert staples.

-- Julius Erving averaged 23 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and four turnovers a game for a Philadelphia 76er team that lost in the second round of the Eastern Conference semis to the San Antonio Spurs.

-- Elvin Hayes averaged 21 and 18 for a Bullets team that lost a close first-round matchup to the New York Knicks.

-- Karl Malone averaged 28 and 11 as his Jazz lost in the conference finals to the Portland Trail Blazers.

-- Pete Chilcutt averaged 3.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 54 games for the fledgling Vancouver Grizzlies.

-- Chris Webber put up 24.5 points, 10 rebounds and 4.5 assists, but he played in only 54 games and his Kings lost in the conference finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.

-- Tom Chambers put up 20 and 6 for a SuperSonics squad that lost in the first round.

This year, Dirk averaged 26.6 points, nine rebounds and three assists -- averages that have actually jumped to 28.7 points, 12.1 rebounds and three assists in the playoffs. Remember, just matching your regular season output during the playoffs (against improved competition, and turned-on defenses that get to play you every other day) is a remarkable achievement in and of itself.

Also, Dirk is shooting 45 percent from the 3-point arc (up from 41 percent in the regular season), and shooting just 2.4 treys a game. Compare that with the 3.4 he threw up during the first 82 games, or the 4.9 he was attempting in 2002-03 -- the last time the Mavericks made the conference finals. This is a player who is growing before our very eyes, forced into leading a team that features just one leftover (Adrian Griffin, who has played for Houston and Chicago since) from the '03 conference finalists. He's continually risen-to, accepted, and met every challenge that has been thrown his way this season, while exceeding expectations. This is the best player in the best postseason we've seen in years.

Dirk Nowitzki. Outre' Dirk. Steely Dirk. It's growing.

Trading Fours

-- The Mavs and Suns combined for about 187 possessions on Thursday night, and yet they only combined to turn the ball over 19 times. Weird, wild stuff. Phoenix actually turned the ball over eight times in the game's first 13 minutes, then didn't turn it over again for the next 14 minutes, and coughed it up just once in the final 21 minutes of their loss.

-- Dallas had made a point to deny that lob play that Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni loves to employ. You've seen it, like, 432 times so far this postseason; it features a screen and roll with Boris Diaw and Shawn Marion at the top of the key, with Marion cutting toward the front of the rim and Diaw delivering the pass. I counted three times in which the Mavs stuffed the play tonight, as Diaw couldn't even get off a pass.

-- The Mavs were incredibly active on defense to start Game 5, holding Phoenix to 23 points, with seven turnovers and three shot clock violations. It wasn't until Phoenix realized that Dallas was overplaying too much, and started to go for offensive rebounds (Diaw, especially), that the Suns started to come back.

-- The Phoenix Suns will play their 102nd game of the season on Saturday night, trying to stay alive at home in Game 6. Though their legs left them at times tonight, and Dirk is a man on a mission, I'd have a hard time counting on the Mavericks to close things out on the road. This isn't to say that Dallas won't come out with guns blazing, ready to play inspired, focused basketball. It's just hard to stay in front of a team like the Suns for 48 minutes, and though Phoenix has issues near the end of close games, I'm leaning towards a Game 7. Then again, would you bet against Dirk Nowitzki at this point?

i saw dirk's talent even when nash and finley were still with the mavs...he just wasn't given all the breaks because at that time finley was still their main guy.

it's nice to see him play his best basketball this year...after years of frustration.

mavs in six! 'nuff said.

This is the year of Dirk and the Mavs. He feels it, he wants it. He won`t let this opportunity slip by. He truly is a special player and most importantly for the first time he realy is on a mission. So look out!

Hi, Kelly, nice to read about Joe Jackson, another one I like besides Dirk. I have seen him in a concert in Düsseldorf in the 80ies. JJ is a very smart musician. Hope there is another Happy Ending for Dirk and the mavs.
Dirk turns out to be playing like an animal. Looking at all the pix on different web-sides like si.com, nba.com or dallasnews.com I see a strong change in his face since last november. Now I see a strong will and all signs of a huge fighting spirit.
Usualy I get up at 4 am here in Germany and read the courtside live reporting on nba.com before I start for my little morning-job at 5 am. Tonight I had the feeling, that the suns were gaining the momentum as Thomas delivered his 3s for a 77:70 lead and saw the game swimming away - same feeling as Dirk like he said after the game. After this certain timeout I felt him notching up a gear showing what a great competitor he is and how bad he wants this special jewelry. He plays now as he has played for the german national team in the last international championships. He is my favourite sportsman of the year.

Me too :)

The german bird flies for the title!!

Joe Jackson? Why'd you have to slip THAT in? A perfect synthesis of two tired and played out genres by a yawner of a fourth tiered and tired wanna-be rocker. Stick to sports

Essentially you are witnessing what Dirk has been doing for years, but now it's on the second biggest stage possible. Credit is due to whomever got into his head and challenged him to step it up and go to the rim more. His game has elevated ten-fold simply based on the fact that he is an extremely legitimate threat when he dribbles towards the rim. And because he can make that move, the fear is there, and when need be, in transition, he can still drain that beautiful jumper.

As a Mavs fan since the inception in 1980, this has been a very vindicating playoff season thus far. The trip to the Finals, that has alluded this team, and Dallas for so long, will be the icing on a cake of success baked by the hardwork of those like Nowitzki, Terry, Howard and the rest of the team, not to mention the great work of the Mavs coaching staff as well as the front office.

The elevation of Dirk's play this past off-season should move the league to create an MVP of the Playoffs.

I'm Joe, and that's how I see it.

The Joe Jackson line was cute. The Pete Chilcutt line was hilarious.

Dirk IS a stud - but Nash the dud of the night with 20 and 11 assists? Give your head a shake. Try that cement head Jason Terry as dud of the night.

What Tim Thomas mouthed to Dirk is what all of America, with the exception of Mavs fans, are thinking. That was classic. Must have TiVoed it ten times, at first just to confirm what I thought I saw then it just became too funny.
Dirk is a 7'0 2 guard, nothing more; 1/2 cotton candy, 1/2 paper mache. Look how nervous he gets when his defender does not go for pump fake. He either 1) looks for the nearest guy to pass to or 2) he attempts what must be one of the most awkward looking drives to the bucket known to man. All elbows and knees. And now with the tongue? Look we know you are soft, you know you are soft, hell even your attempt at cred is soft. "Look how good I am. See my tongue?" When you are 7'0 tall and shot more jumpers than banging and earning our points you are soft and will be known as such.
I very much look forward to the finals because the East will destroy the Mavs and Dirk will be shown for what he is.

It was good to finally see the Mavericks blow out someone.
I think this win cements their place in the NBA Finals. The Suns just don't have anything left in them.
I'm also glad to see Bell and D'Antoni get technicals. It's about time the refs got tired of their complaining.
And lastly I would like to recognize the MVP in this series.
No not Nash (although I love his game) but rather Dirk who deserves it.
Mavs in 6!!!!!

Just a week ago we were talking about Lebron's 31/8/6, with better defense than Nowitzki and taking Detroit to 7 without help from anyone on his team. You've already forgotten that? The fact that Lebron carried them in every single game, dominated the 4th quarter of almost all of their wins and hit 2 game-winning shots, while Dirk just pulled an ll-point stinker and has disappeared in most of the 4th quarters so far? The fact that Dirk let up 32/12/4/3/1 to an injured Duncan and is letting Dallas's weak front court run all over him? Remember when he disappeared in the 4th of Game 1 against the Spurs? Game 5? Game 6? Game 1 against Phoenix? A real star shouldn't be invisible in so many close games. You're annointing him far too soon.

No question that Dirk should of been MVP of the league....
Posted: 10:34 AM   by Anonymous
The Suns will win in 7 and then go on to beat the Heat.
Posted: 10:34 AM   by Mike D
Dirk has reached the Hall of Fame level now. He's a complete and dominant player. His defense needs a lot of work, but he's willing the Mavs to wins.

Joe Jackson? Nuff said.
Posted: 10:58 AM   by Alain
Mr Dwyer, that Joe Jackson line makes me enjoy your columns that much more!

One faulty statement on your part though: I think starters should be expected to increase their stats during playoffs. There are allways so many points to scores and rebounds to be had. You may point out that defenses tighten up, but I reply that scores do not dip that much, and that coaches tighten their rotations.

That was a fascinating look back at some pretty great players at 28. Given their history, are we to predict Nowitzki will follow suit and lose in this year's playoffs or will he break the trend and lead his team to ultimate glory? Interestingly enough, my dad believes a Game 7 to be a foregone conclusion. Yes, the Suns push teams to play all 48 minutes, but with Dirk pushing back I predict the Mavs to win Game 6 and, eventually, win their first championship.

no, you're a Nowitzdork
Posted: 12:10 PM   by Anonymous
But just think what could have happened if Joe Jackson were playing in this years NBA playoffs! Perhaps a cover of Hasselhoff's 'Looking for Freedom' could be a nice consolation instead?
Posted: 2:17 PM   by Anonymous
Nice inclusion of Pete Chilcutt on that list. Didn't think anyone would read that far down, did you? I remember seeing Chilcutt play for the Grizzlies during a 1997 exhibition game in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He nailed a Nowitzki-esque 20-foot jump shot for his only points of the game, but it wasn't enough as the Grizzlies lost the Naismith Cup to Marcus Camby, Tracy McGrady, and the Raptors.

Go Suns and may the memory of Pete Chilcutt live on.
Posted: 3:19 PM   by Anonymous
Dirk has been doing this for years now so this is no surprise to Mavs nation.
Posted: 3:58 PM   by Anonymous
Who says a 7 footer has to be a banger? If you have a 7 footer who has a finesse shot, to me he must be much more dangerous than a guy who wants to mix it up inside. A 7 foot triple threat? Name one team in the NBA that would not love to have Dirk or a clone of his on their team. Name one! Don't dis the man because he prefers to not go inside and fight. Recognise that he can shoot out your lights, run the floor and is can pass with the best of them. To the anonymous writer who said that he is soft, he scored 50 points worth of jump shots. What will people remember, that Dirk wasn't a banger? No, they will remember the night Dirk scored 50 points. Admire the man for what he is which is a great player. If I wanted to see a 7 foot banger, I'd watch Big Show in the WWE. Tim Thomas? He does what he does and I respect that. Respect the big German for his real skills. Basketball is as much finesse as it is physical. Would you deny that David Robinson was a great player? He played center and absolutely hated banging inside. Not saying that Dirk is there. Yet. Give the guy his props! Go Dirk!!

I don't care what anyone says...the NBA WISHES it had Lebron vs. Wade right now...and if so you would be talking about the CAVS being down 3-2 (or vice versa) and the KING averaging 35-9-8 against the heat....Dirk is cold, but the KING HAS HAD THE BEST PLAYOFF PERFORMANCE THIS YEAR AND IF HE WAS STILL PLAYING....UNLIKE DIRK WHO HAS HELP, he would be the topic of discussion
Posted: 4:32 PM   by Anonymous
by Forrest...

...No question Dirk has been extraordinary, but so has D Wade. It's hard to say either one has been better than the other.

"What Tim Thomas mouthed to Dirk is what all of America, with the exception of Mavs fans, are thinking. That was classic. Must have TiVoed it ten times, at first just to confirm what I thought I saw then it just became too funny."

Then Dirk proceeded to royally abuse Mr. Thomas, including tossing in an unnecessary 3 in his grill to score is final points.

"Dirk is a 7'0 2 guard, nothing more; 1/2 cotton candy, 1/2 paper mache. See my tongue?" When you are 7'0 tall and shot more jumpers than banging and earning our points you are soft and will be known as such."

Let's see, Dirk scored 50 with a combination of jumpers, lay-ups, dunks, put backs, free throws and a few 3's thrown in there. This performance included 17 of 18 on the line and 12 rebounds. Soft? You sir, like Mr. Thomas, are an idiot. Furthermore, and please try to follow this: banging to get 2 or shooting a jumper to get 2, still get's you only 2 points. As far as "cred", the man is an international superstar who's humble and has an incredible work ethic and talent. His "cred" is as solid as it gets with thinking adults. No, he doesn't have a bunch of tats, jail time, illegitimate kids, or run ins with the law, but hey, no one can have it all.

"I very much look forward to the finals because the East will destroy the Mavs and Dirk will be shown for what he is."

Check out the Mavs record against the East for the past 2 years, including this year's games against Detroit and Miami (I think the Mavs are 3-1 against those teams this year). If the Mavs make to the finals, I suspect Vegas will go all in on Dirk and the gang. Don't worry, all is not in vain. While the Mavs are playing, you can practice looking hard in front of your bathroom mirror. If you get the right look on your mug, perhaps your cred will skyrocket and you can bang our some more useless drivel from your key board.

Now can we stop hearing smug, apparently racist/xenophobic commentators asserting ludicrous points along the lines of "Dirk is great, but Josh Howard is really the best player on the team." Please. Shameful stuff. Imagine guys arguing that Kukoc was better than MJ back in the day...never happen!
Posted: 6:02 PM   by Anonymous
Nice column. Good to see Dirk getting his due. However, as a big Mavs and Dirk fan, I think you are overlooking a player I think is still Dirk's superior. I still have to give the ultimate respect to the man with three rings down in San Antone- Tim Duncan. Mavs in six!
Posted: 6:34 PM   by Anonymous
Whoever said the East was going to destroy the Mavs and Dirk needs to take a closer look at the Detroit/Miami series. Because right now, the Pistons are on a roll after their Game 5 win and they may very well force a Game 7 by beating the Heat in Miami (As a matter of fact, I believe they will). I would very much like to see the Heat try to do what the Mavs accomplished by trying to win Game 7 on the road. And don't forget that you can never count out the Suns. I don't think the Heat or the Pistons can keep up with Phoenix's high-powered offense. And finally, there are other excellentplayers in this league that use awkward positions besides Dirk. Anyone who says Dirk is soft better stop watching the playoffs and skip the Finals because Dirk is playing for the rest of the postseason.

Anyway, the Mavs have shown that they are a championship team because they've closed out the Grizzlies and the defending champion Spurs on the road, and they will continue to do that in Game 6. And I am proud to say that I am a Nowitzness!

GO MAVS!!
Posted: 6:44 PM   by Anonymous
For those that say Dirk is nothing more than a jump shooter and that he never takes it to the rack - I point you in the direction of the most crucial point of the season - the seconds ticking down in a Game 7 against the Spurs. Ask Manu and Bruce Bowen if Dirk is "just a jumpshooter".
Posted: 1:15 PM   by Anonymous
Dirk is a really good player, but the fact is that Mavs are surrounded by ridiculous talent (Howard, Terry, Stack and Harris are legitimate proven scorers), and the Suns are testing the Mavs without Amare. Would the series be this close with Amare? There is no way to tell. But let's not forget how shorthanded Phoenix is.
On the other hand, full compliments to him for beating the Spurs. But again, let's not forget they were up 3-1 and were holding a 20 point advantage in game 7, which they almost blew.
This is a star who is still rising, and a young teah, which is still establishing its identity. Time will tell how great Dirk and Mavs will be. Right now? I will take only Lebron and Kobe over him.

Congratulations to the D Mav's Team... My Prayers are with you all as you journey through this next phase. I wish you all the best and looking forward to the Ring! Great Job.

i think after game 7 claims of dirk being "soft" can die, he took it to the hoop and got at least 4 or 5 and 1's down the stretch and stepped up just like he has during all of this years playoffs. I'm a big dirk fan and always knew if he got agressive he would lead the mavs to the finals. I think some credit should go to avery for nailing that mentality to dirk. As for lebron and D wade i think they have both played extremely well all season and during the playoffs. I think Dwade was the more consistent of the two, but its hard to knock lebron for his performance during his first playoffs.

About what was said about Tim Thomas saying what all of America was thinking, I would just like to tell you that Dirk pretty much won the game 7 in San Antonio because of an and1 that he got while he was going for the dunk. After little ol' Mr. Thomas blew a kiss at Dirk, he responded with a friggin 50 POINTS. Most of which were layups and and1's. So just because your sad that Phoenix is going to lose to the Mavs and the Mavs will be the Western Conference Champs and will then go on to win the finals against the Heat, which by the way was beaten by "that soft 50 point scorin Dirk Nowitzki" by 13 points with Shaq and 36 without him.

"what Tim Thomas mouthed to Dirk is what all of America with the exception of Mavs fans, are thinking"-anonymous jerk

So clever of you to insert America as if the rest of the world does not watch the Mavs. Here in Germany lines form outside sports bars to watch the German National Team and also the Mavs play every game.
Not just the finals.
More jumpers than banging at 7 foot tall is a sign of skill as you can see in Dirks NBA career freethrow pc.(.863)compared to another big man Shaq (.528) Dirk does not need to stand under the basket to score big or shoot jump hooks all night.Dirk is as hard as they come. The Mavs will win against Miami going all 7. One reason they will win is because years ago Shaq coined himself "The Diesel". A 35 year old diesel cant even get out of its own way.
Go get the title Mavs for both of our countries and all of the world.

I'm actually reacting to Kelly Dwyer's trivia about Dallas and Miami, the links between the two franchises he wrote down today. He's forgetting the -maybe- most direct one; Antoine Walker's brief and unsuccesfull stay as a Maverick in (I think) 2003. How much would he like to prove the Mavs wrong?
Think he won't though, Mavs win in seven.

Dirk is amazing, that at 7 feet tall he plays like a like a shooting guard but is still able to rebound and bang down low. There is no on e who will ever be able to stop him in the Finals. Sorry heat but be read to go home in 6.

Dirk is your time men. Shaggy aint taking this from you. Its like Lakers and Detroit in 2004. See has wade and payton, walker, morning i mean all the veterans the way Lakers had in 2004. Detroit were young quick deep and sharp. Sometimes too much experience is not good.
I pick dallas in 5 or 6
