SI.com's Final Four-by-committee (from today's regional breakdown columns) goes like this: Stewart Mandel takes UConn in D.C.; Julia Morrill picks Gonzaga in Oakland; this Blogger takes Texas in Atlanta; and Seth Davis chooses Villanova in Minneapolis.
SI's Final Four, from its tournament preview issue: UConn, Kansas, Duke and Ohio State.
My Final Four (from my original bracket): UConn, Memphis, Texas and Villanova. I'm not going to change it -- even though I've seriously considered swapping Duke for the 'Horns and UCLA for the Tigers.
The mag's Indy quartet has already been halved; but readers, which one do you think will be more correct -- the site's collaborative picks, or my own? Or are we all wrong?
They're both gonna be wrong...I think??? UConn is a given in D.C. although Washington is gonna give them more trouble than people think. I believe LSU beats Duke and then beats Texas to come out of Atlanta. I still like Memphis in Oakland but UCLA still makes me think about it. And as in the past several years, when multiple teams from the same conference makes the Final Four, this year is no different. It's the SEC's turn which gives us Florida out of Minneapolis. I really like the way Florida is playing and they will get past Villanova in a rematch from last year's tourney. I still like UConn to win it all....over Memphis (82-75).
ucla goes down to either the zags or memphis. Memphis easily beat them early in the year on a neutral floor. so forget early in the year...the memphis "lock down" half court defense with wave after wave of superior talent takes over each half of basketball in the last four to five minutes. memphis has too much depth.
Definitely consider UCLA. They play great defense, which Gonzaga does not. The Bruins will at least get to the Elite 8, but I've had them going to the Final Four since before the first tip-off--and I'm an Arizona fan.
Hey Luke. I love that you picked Memphis to win the Oakland regional and even the entire tournament! Youre my new favorite writer in SI! :) Im tired of hearing about how the Tigers are overrated and will be the first #1 seed to fall. They couldnt possibly prove their worth anymore! They are one of the most talented teams in the country and if they go down, theyll go down in a showdown!
If Memphis can beat UCLA, theyll definitely be able to take on Duke. Thanks for the faith! Memphis and Memphis fans like me stuck in a UConn infested East Coast sure appreciate it!
Sean, I like your Memphis comments. They are the most underated team in the country. The networks couldn't ignore them more. I'm surprised Digger and Vitale didn't announce the score as "Bradley lost." Maybe when the final comes, they will announce that as UConn lost. There are some good teams still playing, but Memphis at least deserves a good look and a few words.
