Drop the gloves during the playoffs with SI.com's writers in the NHL Cup Blog, a daily journal of hockey commentary, on-site reporting and reader-driven discussions.
It must have been the off-day. Yeah, that's it. The prospect of a night without hockey was so maddening that it set dozens of you to pounding on your keyboards, filling my in-box with examples of online craziness. The first link takes you to the actual wedding planning site of Brett Hull. Now, Hullie had a rocket release, but apparently he's no rocket scientist. For some reason, every aspect of the site was open to the public, including personal photos, information on the date and location of his impending nuptials, even the gift registry Crate and Barrel? Dillard's? Now there's a man who hasn't lost the common touch! Even the guestbook was open to be read and contributed to. And while there were plenty of legitimate entries, including a few from Brett's former teammates, it became obvious that the word was spreading on Monday. That's when the Sabres fans started hitting it. Now remember, these are fans whose team is heading into the Stanley Cup semi-finals this weekend. But instead of rejoicing in that fact, these bozos entered a forum intended for expression of warmth and good wishes to light Hull up over his disputed Cup-clincher from 1999. Obviously, this kind of behavior can't be condoned. But most of it was pretty funny. Brett (or Darcie) finally wised up yesterday afternoon, adding password protection to the site to limit admittance to actual friends and family. Of course, that won't keep people out for long. Someone will figure out the password. But let me save you would-be hackers some time. It's not nogoal. Trust me. That site was fun while it lasted, but the next one just gave me crazy head. Hockey fever is rampant in California -- well, in Anaheim and San Jose at least. But if this is what we get as a result, I'm not sure the game wasn't better off being ignored by the sun-drenched masses. When Howard Stern left the air a few months back, many of his stations picked up a new morning show featuring Adam Carolla, former star of The Man Show. Dave Dameshek is Carolla's yuck monkey on the broadcast, and apparently he's become enamoured of the "Uma, meet Oprah" potential of Jonathan Cheechoo and Teemu Selanne. That's led to no fewer than six (as of Wednesday) song parodies that feature Cheechoo and Teemu. The first, set to the tune of U2's "With or Without You" features these heart-warming lyrics: Slap of puck, and twist of skate Sheet of ice, I watch you play And I wait . . . for Cheechoo Since I had to suffer through 'em, you should, too. Check 'em out. And if you actually make it through all six, well, you've got a higher whip threshold than me. So, what else ya got? Comments:The thing about the Brett Hull site is hilarious, as a Sabres fan living through No Goal, I would love to see what fans were saying! Also, we're getting restless in the week-long off-time before the conference finals start, we miss Sabres hockey, and all hockey for that matter. No hockey for Tuesday night and none for Thursday, wonder what people will discover to pass the time tomorrow night?
Oh, and the Cheecho and Selanne thing was funny too... How does Brett Hull sleep at night?
Brett Hull is worse than Barry Bonds. Nothing is more pathetic than cheating to win a championship.
Hey I am just happy the fans are passionate and Allan you know how passionate Sabres fans are. Hull was a moron for leaving himself so open- does someone have a link where we can view what was said on the site before it was shut down?
Hockey fever is rampant in California?!?!...and downhill skiing is a hit in Hawaii. I'll give you the Kings, they have tradition at least, but San Jose and Anaheim??? Those aren't teams people think of when hockey comes to mind. Who cares about Brett Hull or Sabre fans blasting his site or dumb song parodies...and get a haircut!!!!!!!
Sabres fans and Buffalo fans in general have to get over it and stop whining . . . should Hull have looked down, saw his skate in the crease and decide in a split second that he was cheating and not taken the shot. That is completely ridiculous. Its is the officials responsibility to police the players and its not Hull's fault that no one had the spine to call that goal back.
You guys all sounds so sad and pathetic still talking about this. Hey Sabers fans, ITS A GOAL. Review it all you want, cry about it all you want, it was a legit goal. The only ones in North America disputing it are you idiots.
"You guys all sounds so sad and pathetic still talking about this."
This coming from a guy who probably throws out Wide Right every opportunity he gets. Are from Philly or something? I hope I'm not in the minority among Sabres fans, but I have nothing against Brett Hull over "No Goal". If Holzinger would have stayed with his man it wouldn't have been a problem. My problem is with the way the NHL handled the situation. Instead of rushing the Stanley Cup onto the ice they could have at lease reviewed the goal. Leave Brett alone!
First of all I agree it's pathetic that people are blaming Brett Hull for that goal still. Secondly, that goal was legal. The rule at that time had an exception stating that if the player was in possession and control of the puck when he entered the crease, the goal counted. Hull kicked the puck up to his stick prior to entering the crease, thus gaining possession and control. Before mouthing off about how horrible a cheater Brett Hull is, maybe you should actually read the rules and understand them.
Is it me, or does Mr. Muir have some issues with Sabres fans?
As for the whole Brett Hull thing, what a non-issue from 7 years ago, and what a smaaaaall amount of the fanbase he must be referring to in regards to this Hull webspace caper - akin to trumping up Philly fans as "battery throwers." This is about as newsworthy as mentioning some peripheral fan-based oddity about a team from year 1938 or what have you. Very small stuff. let me guess ur a bandwagon fan arent you, anyone who wins the cup. im a buffalo fan and always have been and if i was brett i would have took my foot out i dont care if it meant maybe missing out on the cup cheating is cheating and it makes the game pathetic like u call us buffalo fans who actually care about our team. so i think you need to watch what u say about buffalo fans and great story by the way, wish i could have hit the site before they put a password up.
"im a buffalo fan and always have been and if i was brett i would have took my foot out i dont care if it meant maybe missing out on the cup cheating is cheating and it makes the game pathetic like u call us buffalo fans who actually care about our team."
Your the biggest fraud out there. Sure you would have taken the time during that play to look down say hey I'm gonna take my foot out so my team can win the cup in a real way and then not care of you missed scoring the game winning goal. Just because you know that you did the right thing. I think you've just won the biggest bulls***er of the year award. haha honestly your gonna fault him for trying to score a goal to win the cup???? In the heat of the action is he gonna think oh my god I better take my foot out. It was a split second thing and shouldn't have been a goal but you can't compare him to Barry Bonds who juiced up. honestly get over it Buffalo it's been 7 years now
Buffalo has "almost" won numerous sporting events - four missed Superbowls, a toe in the Stanley Cup, and one lateral pass to boot. They have a right to be grumpy. However, it was the referee's fault and not Hull's that the goal was allowed.
Z "Hey Sabers fans, ITS A GOAL. Review it all you want, cry about it all you want, it was a legit goal. The only ones in North America disputing it are you idiots."
At least us idiots know the team name is Sabres, not Sabers. Fnuny, those plays weren't goals for the entire season leading up to that point. OMG! There has got to be nothing worse than living in western NY and having to endure the insipid whining and crying about the No Goal. Deal with it already. It's not Hull's fault that he scored, it's what he did. The puck was there, he scored. Game over. End of story. Who cares where his feet were! You would think that with one of the most prolific goal scorers in the history of the game on ice in OT that your defense might have stayed closer to him. Maybe your goalie could have been in a position to make a save instead of flopping around as usual, so forget it already. Hey, listen: what's that you ask? It sounds like the slow whiney pitch is already beginning - that's the sound of a Sabre's fan preparing for their excuses before the Carolina series has even begun! Put it to rest!
whos the dude who called sabres fans idiots? hulls skate was in the crease when a shot the puck. Its not that hard to figure out.
Hey all you morons that think that was a legit goal...HIS FOOT WAS CLEARLY IN THE CREASE BEFORE HE HAD POSESSION OF THE PUCK AND GO FIGURE THEY CHANGE THE RULE FOR THE FOLLOWING SEASON. You don't think that buffalo fans have looked at that play over and over, and they disallowed so many goals that year because a friggin toe was in the crease but brett hull's entire foot was in there so don't tell me and every other buffalo faithful it was a legit goal! Go back to watching your wnba and stop talking about hockey cause your all clueless idiots.
wow does this debate take me back! sabREs fans have a right to complain...in 1999. Seriously though, can you blame them for having a little fun? And stupid brett hull deserves it for putting that much personal info on the internet and leaving it with public access. I'm sure the buffalo fans would have done the same thing to Scott Norwood if he had the same type of website up. It would be different if they got ahold of his phone number and were calling him or something but give me a break, the internet is a public forum and if you are going to put that kind of site up when you're a notable figure like brett hull, you've got to expect something like this to happen.
I thought I also saw Hull standing behind the goal post with a laser lighter that he was flashing in Norwoods eyes. I think he was on the grassy knoll too.
All of this discussion goes away if the Sabres take home the Cup.
Do people in Chicago and Boston (except Cubs fans) talk about Curses? No, they talk about shiny new rings. Does it matter that the NY Jets haven't won diddly-poo since Joe Willy wasn't selling Ben Gay? No, they have the Guarantee. Will people remember No Goal if the Sabres win the Cup? Maybe a few, but people choose, by and large, to remember the shining, positive moments - after all, the fondest memory isn't the fact that the villain was vanquished, but that the hero is the one who did it. GO SABRES! who said you needed possession and control of the puck while in the crease? how do you possess and control the puck when it's bouncing off hasek?
YOU DON'T! NO GOAL! GO SABRES!!!! by the way, maybe before calling the goal legal, you should actually watch the replay. Hull shoots and gives up possession, he puts it in off the rebound The rule back in 1998 Season/1999 Stanley Cup was anyone in the crease when a puck entered the net would be disallowed. The officials blew the "No Goal" call then the League tried to fabricate a rule change by some "Memo" saying they were going to interpret the rule differentin the playoffs. No GM or coach however received this magical MEMO. The rule of control with the puck while entering the crease would be allowed was added in 1999 Hockey Season because of the Dallas/Buffalo Stanley Cup. Before you call fans names you should check your facts.
Hey, I give Hull some credit. After the game was over, he said that "maybe, it shouldnt of counted". He was the only Dallas Star to admit that. As a life long Sabres fan, 1999 still hurts. The NHL tried to cover their behinds with the great PR move of " we sent a memo".
It shouldnt have counted, but I will feel much better in about 3 weeks, when we finally lift the cup!! I'm from Buffalo and I love the Sabres!
Some sabres fans that are still hung up on that goal, and it is pathetic. Get over it!!! And then to call him a cheater? For being in the crease? How is that cheating? It is not his responsibility to referee the game, he is trying to win, if it happened the other way you think that any sabre would have not taken the shot because they thought it would be cheating. However I must defend the fact that the goal should not have been allowed, and should have been reviewed. It was not a goal according to the rules at the time(which since have changed) and there was no review of it. Just as a note, after the '99 season the NHL started to review every goal in the playoffs for this reason. Due to this goal, so that says a lot about it. But it is in no way Hull's fault that the goal was allowed. Some friends of mine saw Hull out in Dallas about a year after the '99 cup finals. They yelled "No Goal". He shot back with "I got the ring". Couldn't really argue with him. Too bad Schmiegel from Lord of The Rings wasn't there to bite his finger off.
That's when the Sabres fans started hitting it.
Sir, the person that did it actually had the audacity to post the link to the site with the "look what I did" that you would come to expect of a small child. It was one fan, who was quite amused with himself. If you had managed to catch a glimpse of it before it was locked by one of the involved parties, you would have noticed that the posts were coming very quickly in sucession. Ie one a minute. As I said, the person who did it thought it was amusing, other Sabres fans who saw what he had done were not amused. We thought it was a stupid and childish thing to do. Most Sabres fans don't feel the need to go scouring the 'net for Brett Hull and information about him. Especially not that he's getting married. So please, do not lump us all into that group of one or two fans who were acting like five year olds. Most of us have more important things to do than think about him and go so far as to destroy something that is supposed to be loving and for friends and family. You've got to be kidding me. With all the play off talk around you post this? And you point your finger at Buffalo fans. Ironic! You sound as though you have a beef with the Sabres and maybe it's time you get over it and stop whining. So a few fans got wind of Hull's site and posted a few wise cracks. Who cares. Anyone in his position that doesn't have the smarts to block the nonsense deserves it. And you, well you are just pathetic to blame the entire city of Buffalo for those said comments. You know the ones, the ones we can't see. As for no goal. It is what it is. Not Hull's fault but the officials who had no balls to stop the media frenzy and take a look. Hmmm kind of like.. well.. you!
Well, Hull got a ring, but look, he had to live how many years in Dallas? You would think that hockey would have civilized those gonzo-chimps by now, but nope, quite a few villages down there not only still produce idiots, but let them wander all over the country to boot.
The guestbook was public, and what else would a true Sabres fan have written there?
This discussion has cracked me up. Talk about living in the past. Bitter, party of one please. Thanks for the funnys.
As a Sabre fan living in Minnesota it was especially difficult swallowing that cup ending travesty but to be in a bar filled with fans of the former North Stars cheer the team that Baltimore Colted them not 6 years made it more difficult to witness.
Hate it or not, the crease rule was never absolute. Goals were disallowed if the player preceded the puck into the crease - in other words, if Hull goes in there and someone pots a shot from the circles. But he shot it in the first place and followed the rebound in. The puck may have left the paint for a split-second while he was whacking at it, but you can't expect the refs to catch that in the middle of the play - nor for a review to overturn it. Realistically? You will never see that call overturned.
Leave Brett alone. This wasn't like Vinnie Testaverde against Seattle ten years ago, squirming himself into the end zone well after the whistle. THAT'S cheating. Brett was doing his job - and if it had been Jay McKee on the other end with the rebound, how many of you Sabre fans would be volunteering to give the Cup back? Seriously, let it go. Flyers fans see my Isles jersey and the first words out of their mouths are always "Leon #@$%~! Steckel!" Do you really want to be like that? For all of you idiots out there who do not understand anything about hockey(anyone in the South) It wasnt a goal. The rule clearly stated that a player with the puck can not be in the crease when he shoots. Every camera angle clearly showed his skate in the crease. The only reason it wasnt overturned because the refs did not have the balls to call back the Dallas celebration. Hopefully this year the refs wont determine the Sabres fate again.
