'Canes guardedly optimistic up 2-0

Posted by Yi-Wyn Yen
Eric Staal arrived at the RBC Center for Game 2 in a dark black suit driving his silver BMW 700 series sedan. As a middle-aged fan wearing a Carolina jersey chased after his luxury sedan, the 21-year-old Hurricanes center, with one hand on the steering wheel, made a right turn into the players' parking lot.

Three hours later, Staal was weaving through traffic down the center lane of the rink with just as much confidence when he coolly set up the game-winning goal for Andrew Ladd, the youngest player in the finals. Says Staal, who leads the league with 22 points, "Laddie was a little ahead of me when I picked up [the puck], so I had to give it to him. It was a big goal for him."

With a 5-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 2, the Hurricanes are now just two shy from claiming the Stanley Cup, but they are far from sitting comfortably in the driver's seat. "If we breathe easy, we're going to be in a situation where San Jose was," said Hurricanes defenseman Aaron Ward. "The worst mistake you make is underestimate your opponent. I'm not saying San Jose did, but there is an obvious potential."

The Sharks lost in six games after winning the first two to Edmonton in the Western semifinals, and the Hurricanes are fully aware that the plucky Oilers can repeat a sweep again. Carolina dominated all three periods by stumping the Oilers with 24 blocked shots and relying on superb goaltending of 22-year-old Cam Ward, who stopped 25 shots to put him second behind Anaheim's Ilya Bryzgalov for the most shutouts in the postseason (two).

Oilers' backup Jussi Markkanen replaced Dwayne Roloson, who is out with a knee injury. Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said he had full confidence in his backup, who stopped 21 of 26 shots in his first game in three months and didn't get much help from his team that took nine sloppy penalties.

The Hurricanes, though, were cautious of reading too much into the victory as they prepared to fly out to Edmonton on Thursday morning for Game 3. Said veteran Aaron Ward, "It'll be an interesting situation for the young guys [to receive their] christening at Rexall Center. It's pretty crazy. If you take the perspective of the situation, they've got an entire country behind them." Added center Doug Weight, "We know it's going to be a close game on Saturday. We'll have to make a commitment on every shift when we drop the puck."

The Oilers are looking to become the first Canadian team in 13 years to win the Cup, and the meaning isn't lost on a team that hasn't claimed that title since 1990.

"We're not particularly interested in historical percentages on the what the stats are being down two," said Oilers center Michael Peca. "We're the only ones to have been in this spot, so we're going to leave the baggage in the locker room and get prepared the next two days for a home game." And that is what the Hurricanes fear most.

Cam has 2 shutouts, not three. Gerber has one. That's a total of three for the team, but 2 for Cam. For now.

They should be optimistic when they have a guy who is allowed to cheat on every faceoff he takes. Horcoff is right!

I think Carolina will wear down the Oilers in game 3 with their speed and beat the them in a close game only because Roloson isn't in net. Then Edmonton will pull it together and dominate game 4, winning by 3 or 4 goals, only to return to RBC center to be finished off by the Hurricanes in game 5.

Why would the Canes fear this most?? They beat Montreal and Buffalo at home which are arguably as loud and tough to play as Edmonton. Oh and BTW, Ward only has two shutouts this year. So far, I have yet to read a hockey blog you have written that is remotely close to what is going on with a series. "Hi, Im hockey, have we met?"

The Carolina Hurricanes are doing "Whatever It Takes" to make their dream (and their fans) come true! They have waited long enough and this is going to be their year!

It's nice to see that Ms. Yi-Wyn Yen learned from her past experience and elected not to use the word "dreariness" in this write up.

Phil from Philly will say it again. If the two states of Carolina can't fill the RBC,Really Bad Canes home arena, which had less than 19000 in attendance for each for games 1 and 2 in a 21000 seat arena, why should anyone anywhere else care.

Just a heads up for anonymous that says Brindamour cheats on every faceoff. You might want to worry about winning games rather than what is going on in the face off circle. Brindamour drops from 80% to 50% on faceoffs and the Canes go from a 5-4 to a 5-0 victory. Yeah, winning faceoffs really helped didn't it?

Does anyone care about Staals BMW? Seriously. Was there much of a point to this article?

"Phil from Philly"- you are a loser who needs to check up on things before you write anything on blogs. The actual seating count in the RBC has a max of 18730 seats- no more. Yet the RBC was filled to nearly 19000, well over the max and way overcrowded in order to allow more people to see their beloved hurricanes in Game 2. Go get a life with more purpose. What a stupid comment.

Hey Phil from Philly, all those big time fans in Filthadelphia really spur that team on to greatness. Or not. Philly is a joke, always has been--always will be. GO 'CANES!!!

It has a 1.3 National Rating because the first two games were on Obscure Little Network. Big markets started as Small Markets at some point. Success breeds fans.

Dear Phil,

You are a liar. RBC holds 19,000 for hockey and 21,000 only for concerts. You can't put seats on top of the ice surface during a hockey game. Way to mislead, chump.

FYI: all playoff games at RBC have been sold out.

Wow...the conspiracy theory continues! Brind'Amour CHEATS on the face-off!! What's most remarkable about this breaking news is that the referees have never caught "the cheating" in Brind'Amour's many, many years of playing hockey! But then, that goes along with the conspiracy theory that the referees favor the 'Canes and do not call penalties on their players when they are unmistakenly guilty!
FOR GOD'S SAKE - give it a rest! It is NO coincidence that the 'Canes are in the Stanley Cup Playoffs! They are great skaters, have an incredible team chemistry, and work hard, very hard to be where they are today. What does it take for you people who are constantly writing nasty things about how the 'Canes don't deserve to be in the in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to FINALLY give the 'Canes the respect that they have earned and deserve?????????
Yeah, yeah, I know...here it comes now. The 'Canes only won because the other teams had injuries.
We'll let the games decide and, yes, the BEST team will win.

Just a word regarding the fans who come to the 'Canes games....the Sabres fans were rude and nasty. This is the first time that I have ever personally witnessed such bad behavior. But we've had fun with the Oilers fans. They take the competitive bantering in stride. Good luck in the remaining games.

I'm not too sure why Phil from Philly remarked about Carolina's attendance, since they've sold out every single home playoff game.

Of course, since Phil from Philly (along with the Flyers) couldn't catch a clue if they smeared themselves with clue musk and danced in a field of amorous clues during the height of the clue mating season, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that he is unaware that the RBC Center only seats 18730 for hockey games, and the tickets sold in excess of that are standing-room-only.

GO CANES!

Phil.....I'm guessing you guys played this season, with some really big names I hear........and wow, what a mistake for the Canes to send Keith P to you all....how's he doing by the way?.......But getting that "face-off cheating guy" with the apostrophe in his name, well....I guess we'll just have to continue to suffer with him and all of the other ridiculous trades the canes made, sending the best in return for the "no-names" and "has beens".....

Oh well..but...serious question....are the "cheese-steaks" you all boast about any better than the "flyers" (that no one seems to boast about) this season....or last....or....????? last.....or...

It appears that the reason Carolina is sold out is because there are so many fans for the opposite team. Like Washington, during any normal home game, you can walk up to the Carolina box office and buy a wide variety of seats.
And to the guy talking about waiting so long for Carolina to win the cup...hasn't it only been nine years? I sincerely think that you'll be waiting a while longer, so don't hold your breath yet.
