Top Five Nintendo Sports Games

Double Dribble
You can hear the sound of a 3-pointer being heaved up in Double Dribble just by looking at this picture.

By Gennaro Filice, SI.com

After months of anticipation, I finally ventured into the world of Wii sports. With limited time between NBA Playoff games, I was only able to sample two games: tennis and bowling.

Much to my surprise, Wii's high-tech, motion-sensitive controller was pretty easy to manipulate (though lob shots came in flurries on the hard court). With a few games under my belt, I was holding my own against some seasoned vets of the Wii. But after an hour of bouncing around like an idiot in the heat of virtual combat, I found myself pining for the simple (and sweat-free) sports games of my youth.

When it comes to wasting away one's life in virtual competition, the avant-garde Wii has nothing on its eight-bit great grandfather, Nintendo.

Here are my five favorite Nintendo sports games:

1. Tecmo Super Bowl: Perhaps the most dominant video game athlete ever, Bo Jackson terrorized the virtual gridiron in this classic title. Combining lightning speed with unparalleled tackle-chucking ability, Bo was nearly unstoppable. (Just check out this video.)

2. RBI Baseball: Although the game included just eight teams (Boston, California, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, New York, St. Louis and San Francisco), rosters featured real players -- a pretty dandy feature back in 1988. In terms of overall depth, no team compared to Boston, which backed up a loaded lineup with a trio of prolific power bats (Tony Armas, Dave Henderson, Ellis Burks) off the bench. But no player was more exciting than St. Louis speed demon Vince Coleman, who was unstoppable in RBI Baseball's biggest sub-game: the pickle. RBI recently returned to popular culture through this brilliant recreation of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

3. Mike Tyson's Punch-out: While it was always tempting to cut right to the chase and enter the code for an immediate bout against "Iron Mike" (007-373-5963 -- remember that baby like my home phone number), this cheated the game of its true beauty: Little Mac's rise to fame. Scrapping through three weight "circuits" before taking on Tyson in "The Dream Fight," Little Mac battled a memorable cast of characters that included Piston Honda, Don Flamenco, Bald Bull, Soda Popinski, Mr. Sandman and Super Macho Man. And his training sessions through the streets of New York were as motivational as they come. (Mac was far ahead of his time with the all pink jump suit.)

4. Ice Hockey: In forming your team's four-man squad, Ice Hockey provided the opportunity to choose each player's size: skinny, medium and fat. Personally, I always opted for "Team Extreme": two skinnies and two fatsoes. (Who ever played with a medium?) As a young patriot, I waged countless Cold War showdowns of United States vs. Soviet Union.

5. Double Dribble: Nothing captures the excitement of a 3-pointer like Double Dribble's B-52 bomb sound effects -- a high-pitched whine as the shot goes up, followed by an emphatic explosion as the ball swishes through the net. And those slow motion dunk clips still tickle my fancy.

Those are my top five, what are yours?

Blades of Steel - The fight option was great
Posted: May 15, 2007 11:53 AM   by Anonymous Rich
Jordan vs Bird - the dunks were sweet!

Blades of Glory - just for the fighting.
Posted: May 15, 2007 11:53 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
RBI baseball is the greatest game ever. Tecmo is great, but, at some point, you have to disqualify the Niners.
Wow, that's a fine list compiled. I think I would only make one change: RC Pro-AM instead of Double Dribble.

Don't forget that Tecmo Bowl, Punch-Out and Ice Hockey can downloaded for the Wii now.

I can't wait to download RBI baseball and take advantage of the missing infield-fly rule!

Forgot to rank my top 5:

1 RBI Baseball
2 Techmo
3 Punch-Out
4 Blades of Glory - the fighting!
5 Jordan vs Bird - the dunks!
Baseball Stars, no question. I can't count the number of times I beat up on the Lovely Ladies just to power up my team.

The Bases Loaded II was a great baseball game.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:03 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Tecmo NBA basketball was darn good, too. It had real players, MJ was the shit. I dunno, I liked it better than Double Dribble, but you can't knock on a game that shows thousands of fans rush into a stadium in like 3 seconds before each game. I loved that intro.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:05 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
IMO, the best baseball game on Nintendo was Baseball Stars. You pick a team, play in a league, & with money from each win, increase each players ability, up to a max. Or you could release a player then sign a free agent.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:07 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
No love for baseball stars? Revolutionized the genre, it was the first game where you could create your own team and players would improve as time went on.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:07 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
One game left off the list is Tecmo basketball. One of the very few games that actually featured Micheal Jordan
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:10 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Guess you never played Blades of Steel--it was far better than Ice Hockey. And it had fights!
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:11 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. Ice Hockey
2. Mario (the first)
3. SBK Baseball
4. Zelda
5. Excitebike
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:14 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I enjoyed the list, and I probably couldn't agree with it more. I do want to add "Ten Yard Fight". I think the very first football game on Nintendo. Either hand it off or throw it to one receiver. Can be much more nuts and bolts than that. Also, "Baseball Stars", the first game that you acquired money to build up you team. Or if you got lucky, throught the magic of Nintendo glitches, you'd turn your game on and have $999,999,999. Remember to press reset when shutting it off though!

RC Pro Am was good too. Does Paperboy qualify as a sport?
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:15 PM   by Anonymous Rich
I meant Blades of Steel in my previous posts...forgot the name for a minute.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:16 PM   by Anonymous Rich
Baseball Stars was awesome too!
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:22 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Bad News Baseball was by far the greatest of the Nintendo baseball games. And Marble Madness was also pretty sweet.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:22 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Can't argue with your picks. Some others that I liked were Konomi's Track & Field, Karate Champ and Pro Wresteling (I know their not your typical sports game)were pretty good too.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:30 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I still think Baseball Stars is the best video game ever made.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:32 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Little League Baseball--the games were only six innings long and the pitchers would bow when they hit a batter
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:33 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
RBI baseball isn't even the best Nintendo baseball game. That title goes to "Baseball Stars". In that game you can create your own players and upgrade them as you get better. A real precursor to the customizing option of today's games.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:36 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
SNK Baseball Stars hands down best baseball game ever

TECMO Superbowl and NBA

Excite Bike was awesome

Blades of Steel was great

even that old school Tennis game was pretty fun
How about Baseball Stars? If you had some creative friends set up an all day draft and then play the all girls team to maximize your players and let the fun begin. I think it was the first game you could create your own player...

P.S Dont sleep on bases loaded 2 the first game with nasty curve balls with the real game view.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:44 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I like your list, but I always used 3 fatso's and 1 skinny guy in Ice hockey. The skinny guy was so I could win all the face-offs. My only disagreement, Bases Loaded instead of RBI. You got to love a game where the umps were named Yuk, Dum, Boo, and Bum. RC Pro Am was sweet too.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:50 PM   by Anonymous Rich
Loved Marble Madness! Even though it isn't sport related - the best game was Contra!
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:52 PM   by Anonymous Rich
There was also a basketball game called Hoops. It was 2 on 2 on a playground. It was pretty good as well.
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:52 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Terrible Nintendo battles were waged at the U fo D with Ice Hockey and Track and Field being the games of choice. For Ice Hockey, the team of choice for me was 3 fat guys and a skinny guy (for face offs and loose pucks)
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:58 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Little League baseball without a doubt is the greatest sports game on Nintendo.

Ward and Saul were the 3-4 batters from NY. Awesome back to back punch!
Posted: May 15, 2007 12:58 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Super dodge ball
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:11 PM   by Anonymous JEremy
Double Dribble's intro was so bad [awesome] it sounded like...

RUBBLE RIBBLE!
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:14 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Alright let's get it straight...

Blades of Glory - funny movie with Will Ferrell

Blades of Steel - Nintendo Hockey game
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:15 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Ice Hockey was the best hands down
Dude, this list is classic but I love the cat who mentioned Bad News Baseball!!! Loved that game. I can't think of changing your list but 10 Yard Fight and Karate Champ were some of my faves. But Baseball Stars HAS to be on this list...then for shear cinematics, Bases Loaded II and Blades of Steel we classic Konami jump offs. The graphics weren't good enough to do a whole game next level, but they could give you a statue when you scored a goal or hit a home run. Plus you could fight in Blades of Steel. Hell of a game.

In Ice Hockey, I always rolled with two fats and two skinnies, the latter of which my brother and I names JoJo and WeeWay.
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:21 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Baseball Stars was unmatched at that time and really could still hold its own today with some improved graphics.

1 Baseball Stars
2 Tecmo Super Bowl
3 RBI Baseball
4 Bases Loaded II
5 Blades of Glory

Honorable mention goes to Pro Wrestling.
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:23 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Pro Wresteling

There is nothing funnier than seeing the amazon start chomping on someone's head.
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:24 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Even though these are the next generation of two of the games listed, I always preferred Tecmo SuperBowl and RBI Baseball III
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:25 PM   by Anonymous SFoster
While RBI was solid with real players, I was always a fan of the origial Bases Loaded...Jersey was the team....Paste batting 3rd, Bay at cleanup (they could hit the ball a ton).....Rose on the mound, untouchable through 7.....
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:27 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
skate and swim.....a little taste of what I thought California was really like growing up in NJ
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:27 PM   by Anonymous Rich
Karate Champ rocked as well!
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:27 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1-Tecmo Super Bowl
2-Baseball Stars
3-Double Dribble
4-Blades of Steel
5-Super Dodge Ball

Honorable Mention:
10 yard fight, Ice Hockey, Golf, RBI Baseball, Super Spike V'Ball, Tecmo Basketball, RC Pro Am
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:29 PM   by Anonymous SuperDude
Baseball Stars... how great was it to create a team with all your friends. Too bad Baseball Stars 2 sucked out loud.
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:30 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
In no particular order.

Jordan vs. Bird
Blades of Steel
Bad News Baseball
Tecmo Bowl
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (The original)
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:32 PM   by Anonymous Jeremy from the 'Peg
SUPER DODGE BALL!!!!! How can no one have played one of the coolest sport games ever for NES. Very simple, easy to play. Knock out your opponents b-4 they knock you out.
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:39 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
You need to make this a top 10 list - your 5, plus Baseball Stars (my #1), Blades of Steel, Bases Loaded, Pro Wrestling, and Racket Attack. (Super Dodge Ball as an honorable mention)
I wore out 2 Baseball Stars cartridges - I played full seasons, keeping stats on a score sheet, and made the early nineties Mets much better than they were. Yes, I'm a dork.
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:40 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
My top 5:

(1) Excitebike
(2) Super Dodgeball
(3) RC Pro Am (does that count as a sport?)
(4) Ice Hockey
(5) Karate Champ
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:41 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
You've got to love Bases Loaded 1 & 2. On the first one, you could always bean the other teams big hitter and he charge the mound... boom he gets tossed from the game and they have a huge hole in the lineup.

Oh and Super Dodge Ball was freakin
sweet.
Baseball Stars, IMO, is the best pound for pound baseball game ever made. It was great all the way around.

Also, Super Dodge Ball was great as well
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:46 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Leaving out Blades of Steel was a travesty
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:47 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf!! Absolutely great game. I bought an old Nintendo in college just so I could play it... Always had to jam something on top of the cartridge to get it to boot up. Classic!
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:47 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. Punch Out
2. Baseball Stars
3. Tecmo Bowl
4. Blades of Steel
5. Double Dribble
Posted: May 15, 2007 1:58 PM   by Anonymous celts33
1. Super techmo bowl
2. Double Play Baseball
3. excite bike
4. Double Dribble
5. Bases Loaded II

Honorable mention:
1. Goal
2. NHL 94
3. Duck Hunt
Atari 2600 baseball. Against the computer, it had only one fielder that moved left to right and would tag the guy out at second every time. You had to bunt the ball slowly to get the baserunner to third to score a run. I think I was only .400 in beating the computer...wish I had the thing to try to get back to .500...

5. Gold Medal Challenge '92
6. Double Dribble
7. Kings of the Beach

You had a pretty good list. But you forgot Little League Basball. That was the best baseball game ever. No one could beat if i was New York or Canada.

1. Tecmo Superbowl.
2. Little League Baseball.
3. Tecmo NBA Basketball.
4. Pro Wrestling.
5. Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:22 PM   by Anonymous P-Rod Seattle
1. Tecmo Super Bowl (nothing comes close to its superiority)
2. Blades of Steel
3. RBI Baseball
4. Tyson's Punchout
5. California Games

Honorable Mention: Excite Bike, Tecmo Bowl, Base Wars (nothing like robots playing baseball in the year 3000!)

Worst game: 10 Yard Fight
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:30 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Blades of Steel - no doubt the greatest Nintendo Game. My buddy and I still play, he keeps a Nintendo around just for this purpose.
1.Baseball Stars (by far the best sports game ever made)
2.Tecmo Bowl
3.RC Pro AM
4.Little League Baseball
5.Super Dodgeball

Honorable Mention:
NHL 94 & Double Dribble

Love the list...
Mine would be
1. Baseball Stars...I thought I was the only one that loved that game!
2. Tecmo Bowl
3. Bases Loaded..was this the only game that allowed a player to charge the mound?
4. Golf...graphics were not near like today's games, but was fun anyway!
5. Double Dribble...didn't this have some cheesy half-time show with cheerleaders? Classic

Others worth mention include;
Blades of Steel...love the fighting and the winner keeps playing, the loser sent to the box
Pro Wrestling
Superspike V'Ball
Track and Field II

I want to see the new games with a feature that would allow on command a player to charge the mound, or argue with a ref/ump...choose to walk away or keep arguing and get tossed! That would rock!
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:50 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
The only people who don't have SNK Baseball Stars on their list, are people who have never played it.

I still fire up the NES every once and a while to play.
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:52 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Culture Brain Baseball. One of the fields was in space, and on one the league modes you could use superpowers.
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:53 PM   by Anonymous Mike L.
I haven't seen it on anyone's list but Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf was the Tiger Woods PGA 200_ of it's day. I loved the free swinging power of Jumbo Ozaki!
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:54 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Where's the love for NES Open? It's the greatest golf game ever made!
Posted: May 15, 2007 2:59 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Climbing the wall in Baseball Stars to rob a homerun was awesome. It was too easy to hit home runs though. There would be like 10 a game. The dive, jump and climb features were way ahead of its time.
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:19 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Any track and field game with the "Powerpad." Well ahead of its time and an absolute cat-pee magnet if left out too long. Awesome.
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:33 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I'm surprised that nobody mentioned "Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball." "Mikey" obviously being the most valuable player in the game due to his speed. "Sid" and "Rocky" beasts at the plate.
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:36 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Baseball Stars by far, the most advanced game of it's time:

Create a Player
Create a Team
Franchise Mode
Free Agents
Trades
HR Robbing
Cumulative Stats

20 years later and MLB 2K7 can't even get these things right.
Baseball Stars?

I spent many hours in jr. high pretending to listen to girlfriends while romping thru season after season of Tecmo Super Bowl.
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:41 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
No love for California Games??
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:44 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. Baseball Stars
2. Little League Baseball
3. Pro Wrestling
4. Tecmo Super Bowl
5. California Games

Nothing like riding a bmx bike or playing hacki sack on nintendo. I had my entire little league baseball team on baseball stars, man this brings back memories.
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:49 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Pro Wrestling and Arch Rivals
I can't argue with that list. Double dribble was a great game and my brother and I still play RBI Baseball and Tyson Punchout, but I'd have to add Golf and Baseball Stars to that list somewhere.
Posted: May 15, 2007 3:58 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Baseball Stars was great, I think that the early Boxing game( You could modify your fighters appearance ) was also a great game.
Posted: May 15, 2007 4:05 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Blades of Steel was the best Hockey game ever made and one of the best games ever made for the NES, you picked Ice-Hockey over that. What's wrong with you!!!!
Baseball Stars - Birth of building your own team
Tecmo Super Bowl - Full football season
Double Dribble - all time classic
Blades of Steel - sticks to the head
Excitebike - build your own race track!
Posted: May 15, 2007 4:08 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Tecmo Bowl has to be Number 1, but don't forget about the NES Open- Seeing Mario play golf was awesome.
Posted: May 15, 2007 4:19 PM   by Anonymous Jaycee3
It's not called "Culture Brain" baseball, that's who made it. It was actually called baseball simulator 1.000, and it was better than Baseball Stars. The look on the batter's face when you plunked him was CLASSIC, not to mention when you used a power up- you could make him explode. What were the power-ups? Anything from a "stop" ball for your pitcher to a "hyper throw" for your fielder, to a "bomb" ball for your hitter, which would explode on contact. Oh yeah, you can create your own team and pick from about 30 different power-ups for each player. That really took me back.
Posted: May 15, 2007 4:34 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I think "Skate or Die" pretty much says it all.
RC PROAM for all you racing fans...
Posted: May 15, 2007 4:43 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Sk8 or Die is gotta be up there and how bout Duck Hunt? skating and hunting are sports, sort of
Um, did you live down the street from me in Memphis? The greatest addition though was the running pad that came with the Olympics game where if you got on your knees and beat the pad with your hands, you ran like a 4.2 100 meter dash. Good times.
Posted: May 15, 2007 4:48 PM   by Anonymous ryan
KUNG FUUUUU!!!
Posted: May 15, 2007 5:06 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Apparently you all missed out on a true diamond in the rough. Baseball Simulator 1.000 was THE BEST baseball game by a mile. You could choose a stadium to play in, including one in outer space. It was downright fun.

Big props to Skate or Die and Pro Wrestling, if those count as sports.
Posted: May 15, 2007 5:14 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
How can you not have RC Pro Am in your top 5?
Posted: May 15, 2007 5:20 PM   by Anonymous Lucas Wright
I still love Rbi Baseball. I play it every friday and sat. night between the hours of 8 pm and 2 am. It is what I live for!!
Posted: May 15, 2007 5:41 PM   by Anonymous Robert Finger
When me and the boys aren't drinking root beer and playing with Lego's it's a steady diet of Metroid and Wheel of Fortune on the NES. I love Pro Wrestling as well (the game but also the real thing).
Posted: May 15, 2007 5:42 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. rc pro am--every ten-year old's dream: remote control cars that shot missles.
2. mike tyson's punch out--only a game with mike tyson's name on it could somehow get away with so many racial/national/sexual orientation stereotypes and still be endearing
3. bases loaded--best beanball option
4. pro wrestling--star man's flying cross move was pure artistry in motion
5. ice hockey--i was a two fat, two skinny guy too. i "borrowed" this game from a kid down the street, in exchange for my sister's copy of ice climber (worst game ever). nineteen years later, he still hasn't gotten it back.
Posted: May 15, 2007 5:59 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
COME ON ...
No Baseball Stars?
I wasted 3 summers on that game.
Best list ever right here...

5: Little League Baseball
4: The original Tecmo Bowl (49ers were unstoppable)
3: Hoops (The fat kid dunkin was hilarious)
2: Track & Field
1: Pro Wrestling...which could never be beaten until the NES Max and Advantage came out. Turbo buttons for piledrivers all night long!

Honorable Mention: Blades of Steel, Double Dribble, Bases Loaded
Posted: May 15, 2007 6:01 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Pro Wrestling was thee game. The Amazon! Not only did he chomp on your head, he tried to hide it from the ref!! Star Man, and I can't think of the guy's name you had to fight for the title, but I remember he was very hard to beat. What a game!
Posted: May 15, 2007 6:08 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Three words:
Tecmo. Super. bowl.

Come on people. Bo in Excellent? forget it.
Posted: May 15, 2007 6:26 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Super Spike Volleyball
Gold Medal Challenge
Track & Field I & II
Both Techmo Bowl Games
Posted: May 15, 2007 6:29 PM   by Anonymous Ricky
1. Tecmo Super Bowl
2. Double Dribble
3. Baseball Stars (little better than RBI to me)
4. Blades of Steel
5. Ring King
6. R.C. Pro-Am
7. Mike Tyson Punch Out
Posted: May 15, 2007 6:36 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
your first three were dead on. The last two left a lot to be desired. Double Dribble was awful and the other was not even the best hockey game. Bases Loaded 2 was ridiculous good. And you have to give love to the two guys nintendo was created for, mario and luigi. Super Mario 3 was ahead of its time awesome fun. P-wings, bear suit, froggy suit, the hidden levels, etc.

Tecmo/rbi/tyson rule the nest however
Posted: May 15, 2007 7:19 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
California games is being neglected. I only saw it mentioned a couple times. Had to give it a shout out.
Posted: May 15, 2007 7:51 PM   by Anonymous raywy
Tecmo bowl rocked. But it was the Chiefs and Christian Okoye that couldn't be stopped
Posted: May 15, 2007 7:52 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
The greatest NES game of all time was The Legend of Zelda.

1. Legend of Zelda
2. Super Mario Bros 3
3. RBI Baseball 2
4. Tecmo Super Bowl
5. Contra
Posted: May 15, 2007 7:54 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
what about T & C surf?
Baseball Stars so much better than RBI baseball, the mere fact that this game was left off the list taints the entire article. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul
Posted: May 15, 2007 8:16 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I still have my nintendo and play Tecmo Bowl and Little Leage Baseball against my brother a couple of times a week. (It is a huge rivalry) L.T. is really fast in Tecmo Bowl, and Canada is my squad in L.L. Baseball. Baseball Stars and Blades of Steel are real tight, but don't forget the tennis game Racket Attack or the fishing game The Black Bass. One thing you have to love about the nintendo is the music.
Posted: May 15, 2007 8:30 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1) Mike Tyson's Punch Out
2) Double Dribble
3) Baseball Stars
4) John Elway's Quarterback
5) Ice Hockey

Im in agreement blades of steel cannot be ommited from this list
man this stuff is hilarious!
and thank you to the guy who put arch rivals out there, i totally forgot about that game and i LOVED it!! but i gotta go with:
1) BASEBALL STARS (greatest game ever!) 1st game to dive and climb the wall...unbelievable!
2) JORDAN VS BIRD (dunks were off the hook)
3)KINGS OF THE BEACH (sinjin smith & randy stoklos = bad @$$ kats
4)TECMO BOWL (obvious reasons)
5) ARCH RIVALS (super hilarious old skool)

LT was the best Tecmo Super Bowl player, he blocked every kick

I played Super Tecmo Bowl so long I about melted the machine.

Liked Ice Hockey but the uniforms were too closely colored so you could only play certain teams or you couldn't tell them apart.

Tecmo Super Bowl
Baseball Stars
World Class Track Meet (with the power pad!)
Mike Tyson's Punch-out
Track and Field

Original Nintendo Golf and ExciteBike were also golden gods.

Zelda being the best Non-Sports game.

Blades of Steel is still the best sports video game ever. Ever.

BASEWARS was by far the best Nintendo Game of all time

Good Top 5....mine though

1. Tecmo Bowl (Fuad Reveiz could kick 60 yarders at will)

2. Little League World Series

3. Blades of Steel

4. Bases Loaded II (Used the Jersey squad...they had murderers row at the 1-4 batting spot)

5. Double Dribble
Respect from Panama...

Bases Loaded II
All RBI Baseball games
BASEBALL SIMULATOR...THIS GAME WAS AWESOME!!! DO YOU REMEMBER.
Baseball Stars needs to be on the list.

I always liked the game Hoops and Arch Rivals. Hoops was an early version of street basketball and Arch Rivals you could just drill your opponent at any time since there were no fouls called.

BASE WARS!!!

I don't know if anyone mentioned these yet...

Mutant League Football

and

Mutant League Hockey

In Football, you could bribe the ref and then kill him when he was bribed by the opponent. Also, there were land mines, deaths and a metal-spiked football.

Also, let's not forget the classic teams (The Forty Whiners) and some of the best players, including the ever tough Bones Jackson.

Another great innovation was showing highlights at halftime of other games around the league. Awesome.

Classic game.

Hockey was cool, too. You could kill an entire team, and they had to forfeit the game. There were some really mean hits and I think players could even get stuck under the ice.

The Mutant League series needs to be brought back to the current-gen systems. Really.

Ice Hockey, no way How about, the Ultimate classic, How many people missed classes and or never went out of their dorms for a month due to NHL 95 or Bill Walsh College Football
Posted: May 16, 2007 9:37 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. Tecmo Superbowl (Bill's balanced attack for me)
2. Tyson's Punchout (shoutout to King Hippo)
3. Baseball Stars (second one was great also)
4. Techmo Basketball (Rex Chapman and the Hornets)
5. Ice Hockey (three fatties and a skinny)

Honorable mention to American Gladiators! It beats RC pro-am and Excite Bike in the pseudo sports game category.

Top 5

1. Tecmo Super Bowl (well ahead of its times)
2. SNK's Baseball Stars (the first to offer team creation/management)
3. Little League (which wasn't touched until a decade latter)
4. Baseball Simulator 1.000 (I loved using the 360 option, hit a homerun and you think the monitor wouldn't stop spinning)
5. NES Golf (it is still as relevant today as it was when it came out)

Honorable mention
- Blades of Steel for the fights, passing, and who can forget the intermission games on the scoreboard?
- Sk8 or Die for the unique competition. It even spawned a spin off called Ski or Die
- California Games was good if you wanted to involve a bunch of friends into a single competition
- There's Punchout with either Mike Tyson or Mr Dream...
- TECMO Basketball... Shame NES at the time wasn't into doing the year-to-year franchises. This game had lots of potential to be a real franchise for TECMO
The original Baseball. There was nothing else on the game just "Baseball", an instant classic. For all you Met fans out there: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8547285560243429315

That's what im talkin bout.

I loved Baseball Stars! great game. I also loved MLB Baseball. It looked like RBI, but had every team and roster, and it let you create your lineup...and it was possibly the easiest game ever made.

Slightly off topic, but NHL '93 and NHL '94 for Sega Genesis were the best two sports games ever. All Stars West vs. Hartford, but to play with ASW, you have to pull your goalie. Good times.
1. RBI Baseball
2. Tecmo Superbowl
3. Punch Out
4. Tecmo Basketball
5. Blades of Steel
5. NES Soccer (uncontrolable players and a clock that ran 100x normal speed)
4. 10 Yard Fight (the option!)
3. Hockey
2. Techmo Bowl (the original, where Lawrence Taylor ruled)
1. NES Golf (the wind direction, the sloped greens, the cluch shots where you could easily and irreversably select the putter instead of the driver. If you played this game the plasic door on your NES was no doubt broken off in a furious rage)
Posted: May 16, 2007 10:44 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I loved Mutant League Football and Mutant League hockey but you were suppose to list your favorite NES games and those two were not NES games. As far as top 5 NES games, Basaball Stars was the BEST, then Mike Tyson Punchout, Tecmo Bowl, Arch Rivals and finally Double Dribble.
Posted: May 16, 2007 10:48 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
That's a fantastic list, I couldn't agree more. Those games bring back memories.
Top 2 is right on point. Bengals were an underrated team, you could basically dominate with David Fulcher.

Ice Hockey had to be tied with Blades of Glory, Double Dribble was great, the fadeaway 3 pointer from the corner was unstoppable.

RBI baseball theme music was great, i can hear the beats in my head right now.
Posted: May 16, 2007 11:14 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I think we need to consider Super Spike V'Ball and Play Action Football because of the four-player option. Also, goal was pretty sweet...played on a field the size of a small country.

(1) Tecmo Super Bowl - Statmaster's dream. Jumpstarted Fantasy Football.
(2) Baseball Stars - Combines level building with good gameplay.
(3) Mike Tyson's Punch Out - Game was like Mott's. And I had the sauce.
(4) Kings of the Beach - Still one of the best multi-player games.
(5) Ice Hockey - Better multi-player and better gameplay than BOS.

Honorables:
*Little League Baseball
*RBI Baseball
*Arch Rivals
*Indy Heat/Off Road
*Super Dodgeball

EA NHL 94 was the best game ever! I can still hear the organ playing for the Hartford Whalers at the start of the game.

NBA Jam was pretty awesome, too... but no Jordan... and Milwaukee had Brad Lohaus (Brad Lohaus?!?! Ugh...).
Bad News Baseball was great

1. RBI baseball- you could bunt and get an in-the-park HR
2. World Cup Soccer- as in real life, the USA team could not keep up with the European and South American teams
3. RC Pro Am
4. SuperSpike V-Ball- had 4-player capabilities... cutting edge at that time.
5. Basewars anyone? If it was a close call, the "players" would have a one-on-one fight to determine if the runner was safe or out.

Pro Wrestling - that Starman and his flip kick ruled the world

ExciteBike

People may not be aware of it, but there is (was?) a site where you can play all your classic favorites online. www.vnes.com

My picks are.............

1. Super Tecmo Bowl - without a doubt.
2. Mike Tyson's Punch Out - when a little guy knocks out a guy 3 times his size, you gotta love it.
3. RC Pro Am - i won it all baby!
4. Hoops - even the girl could dunk it.
5. California Games - my brothers and i would play it for hours.

honorable mention: Pro Wrestling, Duck Hunt, Ice Hockey, Little League and RBI Baseball and i know this doesn't count but it was awesome Caveman Games. It was hilarious watching them ride dinosaurs, trying to outrun a sabertooth tiger and tossing a woman by the hair. good times.

Best of the Best:

Baseball: Bases Loaded II, Worth is the best hitter of all time.
Football: Tecmo Super Bowl, nuff said
Basketball: Tecmo Basketball, Dan Majerlie's three's were unstoppable
Hockey: Blades of Steel, easily the best
Golf: NES Open, you could cash your winnings in to a huge gorilla

1) Baseball Stars
there was nothing bad about this game, except losing all your work when building a team.
2) Tecmo Bowl
3) Blades of Steel
FIGHTING...AWESOME
4) Double Dribble
Dunk scenes were awesom back then
5)Challange Pebble Beach (Bandai) great early golf game

Honorable Mention
Punch-Out, RBI baseball, Major league Baseball, Duck hunt??, RC Pro Am ( even though I don't think racing is a sport)

the list is great and brings back so many memories but i had to add some games. kings of the beach, rc pro am, baseball stars, world cup soccor, superspike vball, excite bike, blades of steel, bases loaded and bases loaded 2, track and field, and best non game goes to toss up between zelda and contra maybe slight edge to zelda for all the time i spent playing it but they were both great at their time.

I will say this is the best Top Five list ever. I can't really beat the top 5 that was initially mentioned. Without looking at it, I would have chosen those same ones, probably in that exact order. Everyone else's input has been great as well. So I'll do an additional ranking "The Rest of the Best" (in no particular order).

1) Pro Wrestling
2) John Elways Quarterback
3) Track & Field (with the powerpad)
4) Ring King
5) Baseball Stars (too bad it didn't have a memory card then, my team would always get erased)
Posted: May 16, 2007 12:02 PM   by Anonymous Nick
1. Baseball Stars
2. Tecmo Super Bowl
3. Tyson Punch Out
4. Track and Field
5. Pro Wrestling

I remember all of these cames like they were yesterday.

i'm glad to see baseball stars getting so much love on this list. i thought i was the only one who really loved that one. But I do agree that Mike Tyson's punchout was one the greatest, i still find that game online and play it sometimes. These games are timeless
Oh, boy great list. I actually have a CD with every Nintendo game on it, ridiculous, you need a Dreamcast to play all them on, just pages and pages of classics!!!

1- RBI Baseball (Went undefeated the other Friday night, with St. Louis took me about 5 hours to do, even beat the 2 All-Star teams, Coleman and "The Wizard" are a great 1-2 punch, with Jack Clark in their for power. Tony Pena was so clutch for me!)

2- Baseball Stars (Back in the day, I had the perfect team, took me months to create, then one night, my Bro loused up the game by not turning it off right, needless to say only got to play with my team 1 time, destroyed the American Dreams!!!)

3- Tecmo Super Bowl (Hands down the best Football Video Game ever, I'm kind of particular to Barry Sanders over Bo Jackson, I ran for a 1,000 in one game with Barry. Love to terrorize teams with the '91 Eagles Defense, I made Mike Golic a star in that game, getting the quick one-snap sacks. Remember QB Eagles!!!!)

4- Ice Hockey (Loved the Empty Net Overtimes, and the Shootout after that)

5- This is tough, but I'll give you these games in a tie, Goal!, Double Dribble (LA in, what, BLUE colors, oh my!!), Tecmo NBA Basketball, RC Pro-Am, Blades of Steel (Stand there and shoot Penalty Shoot-out), original Tecmo Bowl (Slant in to Jerry Rice was unstoppable), and anyone remember Cobra Triangle (Boat racing game), Ivan Stewart's Off-Road Racing (Great arcade game with the wheel)

1) Tecmo Super Bowl - nothing else compares
2) Baseball Stars - as long as the memory worked, this game revolutionized the 8-bit gaming world
3) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out - I never got to him personally, but the game is a classic
4) RBI Baseball - who else thought it was odd that Vince Colemen was a chubby white guy?
5) Double Dribble - Boston Frogs and the terrible voice-over to start the game

1. Super Tecmo Bowl (only football game ever where you can throw the ball from one endzone to the other
2. RBI Baseball
3. Blades of Steel
4. Mike Tysons Punch Out
5. Championship Series (this is a very very under-rated game. Canada is the best team in the game)

Blades of Steel and Baseball Stars were the best sports games . . . period.

Baseball Stars allowed you to create your own team, and the funniest was when you went leaping for a fly ball and tumbled over the outfield fence!

Classic Blades of Steel: "Gets The Pass!" and "Dub a Dub a Dub a Dub . . . Fight!"

Little League Baseball and Super Sprint! right up there with Tecmo

This is my definitive list with one honorable mention...#1)Tecmo Bowl(the original, not the remix)Walter Payton, Bo Jackson, Eric Dickerson, and teams like the Niners, Browns, and Redskins make it the champ. #2)Mike Tyson's Punch Out, one of my greatest moments was a 3rd round TKO victory over the video game version of Mike Tyson. #3)Double Dribble, no names just great heads up games. #4)Baseball Stars, this game was so far ahead of its time with naming your team, players, and payroll. #5)Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey was cool, but Blades of Steel had fight scenes! And my honorable mention goes to...*Pro Wrestling*, everybody loved WWF & NWA back in the day, this game put PPV in my hood.
Little League Baseball hands down. Don't mess with Canada's murderers row: Albert, Fred, and Peter.

Personally I preferred Major League Baseball. Every hit was a homerun. That game was serious. You could get a homerun on a single.

little league baseball by far the best canada was unbeatable
Also, John Elway on the old PC was a great game

Does anyone remember "Legends of the Diamond"?? it was the baseball game where you made your own team from the greatest players and pitchers of all time and competed in a league against the ones you didn't pick...lou brock couldn't be stopped on the bases!!! great list by the way!
Second only to defeating Metroid was the day I KO'd Mike Tyson in Punch Out. Hey Glass Joe, you're a bum!

Loved playing Rubble Ribble. The Lakers mascot was a lake. You could shoot fade away 720 degree spinning 3 pointers. Nothing like rattling off a few 3s in a row, Ka-BOOM, ka-BOOM, ka-BOOM.

NES baseball was a great one too for the way the stadium lit up on a HR. The agony of watching how slow your outfielders ran to grounder that got through.

Ice Hockey for those slap shots you could launch just over the line at mid ice, from along the boards. When I first sprung that shot on my friend his shoulders slumped.
1. Blades of Steel! The fight function was worth the bucks alone.

2. Pro Wrestling: King Slender and his Back Breaker was unstoppable, and Kin Korn Karn was vastly underrated.

3. Jack Nicolaus Golf: You got to play famous holes, plus get to hear Jack say, "Nice shot!" before every round!

If DIABLO from Dusty Diamond's All-star softball ever made it to the Major Leagues, he'd probably have 800 home runs in his first ten years. Diablo is arguably the greatest athlete of our time. Little Mac is #2.

1) Techmo Super Bowl (Greatest game ever w/ Moon and the 4 receiver spread and also QB Eagles!)

2) Techmo NBA Basketball

3) GOAL! (now feeling the residual arthritis in my left thumb from throwing jukes)

Honerable Mention to Base Wars, Super Spike Vball, and Track and Field with the power pad.
Posted: May 16, 2007 6:02 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
You have to give it up to American Gladiators. Before you went into the acutal match (like the joust or powerball) and it had the picture of a Gladiator and their saying. Nitro's was the best "225 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal!" That game was awesome if you could figure out how to beat The Wall. Probably one of the more difficult semi-sports games out there.
Posted: May 16, 2007 6:10 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I'm not sure you count it as a "true" sports game, but it's hard to go wrong with Super Dodge Ball. That game had everything... special power-throws for each character, comedic facial gesures when hit with the ball, the angel characters floating off the screen after a player's health bar is gone, and of course, the chance to travel around the world as team USA only to face the evil Soviet team in the world finals! That game had it all and is still tons of fun to this day!!!
Posted: May 16, 2007 6:42 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Man all these great games bring back great memories.. Tecmo Bowl and Baseball Stars are far the two best games though. I still wish I had by NES for them... Great blog!!

If you want to include motor cross racing as a sport, then EXCITEBIKE was it, and also RAD RACER puts Gran Turismo to shame.

Play Action Football for the Atari 2600 is the best 6-man football game ever. John Elway Quarterback for the NES is probably the worst football game ever.
1. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
2. Blades of Steel (fighting...awesome)
3. Techmo Bowl (original 4 play)
4. Bases Loaded
5. Caveman Games (And if you don't know, now you know!)

Honorable mentions are Basewars (I mean you get to fight for outs!)

BASEBALL SIMULATOR 2000! YOU COULD CREATE YOUR WON TEAM AND GIVE THEM DIFFERENT SKILLS. SOME GUYS COULD RUN SUPER FAST AND SOME GUSY COULD PITCH A CURVE BALL THAT WOULD BREAK 3 TIMES! AWESOME11

2.Baseball Stars
3. What about super-v!?
4.Arch-rivals
5.Ice Hockey
Posted: May 16, 2007 10:25 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. Tecmo Bowl - The original, Chicago and San Fran were considered unfair.
2. MLB Baseball - RBI baseball with more teams, plus you could pick all star teams.
3. Track and Field - This was amazing with the power pad. Beating the cheetah in hurdles made my month.
4. Ice Hockey - 3 fatties and a skinny, plus USA-USSR grudge matches ruled.
5. Crash n' the Boys Street Challenge - this game was great with rooftop pole vaults, hammer throws etc.
RBI Baseball. National vs. American. Brother vs. Brother. Valenzuela's curve...unhittable.
Posted: May 17, 2007 1:29 AM   by Anonymous Dave
I must agree that a pretty sweet list, but two I know some old heads have forgotten about that was so pretty nice games, "Base Loaded, and Racke Attack". Also, two more games to remember were Rush Attack and Contra, straight up!

does he not realize if he wants those games he can download them onto the Wii?
Posted: May 17, 2007 7:00 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
I would extend the list to 10 games, including Blades of Steel, Excite Bike, California Games, RC Pro Am if you consider that a sport game. RBI though, no go.
Posted: May 17, 2007 10:12 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Track and feild that came with super mario bros. and duck hunt. With the running pad, that game never got old.
i am a 28 and still own a near mint NES with 30 games remain. that will be with me 'til it or i die. it only comes out 2-3 times a year now, but there is nothing like kicking your buddies ass in the same games you did in grade school; priceless.

here's my top 5, a pretty consensus list to most

MIKE TYSON'S PUNCHOUT
007-373-5963 how can you deny the rocky like training themes and beating up guys named 'glass joe', 'super macho man', etc. as a 10-12 years old?!?!? and tyson was downright scary in those days. this game still excites 20 and 30 year olds when mentioned, simply the best, just wish iron mike had the same staying power.

ZELDA
my personal favorite as you gain swords, armour, shoot arrows, grow and strentghen as you conquet 9 levels to save the princess who will continue to get caught up over console changes for years to come. and the cartridge was gold, enough said.

BLADES OF STEEL
the fights kick ass and pretending to knock gretzky on his ass as a king at that time was priceless, because your buddy always had to use the kings, what a jerk. i rocked the blackhawks and always got our pictures in the paper for the playoffs.

TECMO BOWL
payton or bo? that's all you had to decide when playing this game, than and how far to run back from the line of sscrimmage and just heave it downfield to an open reciever since your buddy couldn't see him to cover him off the screen. only drawback, it got redundant, same 4 plays, and whoever had the ball last should win. got to capitalize on offense in this one to win.

CONTRA
(up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, start! *select, start if you're saving the world with a friend)

HONORABLE MENTIONS
the castlevania series
rbi baseball
super mario 2 (trippy mario not like any of the other marios)
Huge fan of all these games, but I have to give a vote to Micro Machines. Aside from RC Pro Am, this game kills it.

1. Super Tecmo Bowl
2. Baseball Stars
3. Punchout
4. Ice Hockey
5. Excite Bike

1. Tecmo Super Bowl - The only way Moon & the my Oilers were gonna win the Super Bowl. This game caused over 1/2 of the 1991 freshman class of NC A&T St U their GPAs.
2. Baseball - My brother & I would scout the sunday paper to "sign" players -- his Braves vs. my Yankees(ask him about "Saaaaaaberhaaaaaagen!! and the "murder" of Mike Schooler...lol)
3. Double Dribble - couldn't stop the dunk from the 3 pt line...
4. Tecmo Bowl - Singletary & Lt were dope, Curt Warner was too, but it was something about Seattle in pink...
5. Blades of Glory - what an adreneline rush when they drop the gloves & you hear "Fight!!!"

i highly agree with Blades Of Steel (not Glory) deserving to be on that list. Bases Loaded should have gotten an honorable mention.

Super Dodgeball.

Any game where you can hit someone off one side of the screen and they come back in on the other side has to be on the list.
Has no one ever played Dusty Diamond All-Star Softball?? It was brilliant!

Similar layout as RBI except you choose your team playground style from the 50 best softball players in the world. Some have rocket arms, some are fast, some are fat power hitters that can plow you over in the base paths, some outfielders can float to rob homeruns. you can only find out these abilities by playing with each player. totally sweet.

Everyone here has it wrong, the Top 5 games are as follows:

1. Nintendo World Cup (nasty bicycle kicks).

2. Super Spike V'Ball (the Double Dragons, are you for real?)

3. Track and Field II (Max controller is a must)

4. Baseball Stars, (nuff said)
drum roll please.
5. Techmo Superbowl (q.b.eagles cannot be stopped).
Posted: May 17, 2007 12:35 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
1. Baseball Simulator 1000 - Mort is the best player in all of the sports games.
2. Tecmo Bowl - LT is better then BO.
i just noticed a couple comments about Dusty Diamond. Hell yes. I agree about Diablo. I also think that if Zelda went to the ML, she would challenge Rivera as the most feared closer of all-time.
Posted: May 17, 2007 12:37 PM   by Anonymous mcatrn
Baseball Simulator 1.000 was unbelievable. I can't believe that was left off the list. It had all the team editing features of Baseball Stars plus you could play in space with superpowers. What a gam.e

The rest is subjective...but if you don't have those as your top 3 you are not a true Nintendo player. And one more thing...the best player in RBI baseball is Nolan Ryan.

I loved Baseball Stars and RBI both, as well as Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball. Tecmo Bowl was great as well, I was preferential to the Bears. I don't know how many of you ever had this happen, but I stumbled across a couple of codes to play what I called a "Shadow Game" where all you could see was the yard markers and the opposing team. The rest of the field was grey and the grey players were SUPER strong and SUPER fast! If you can still enter codes in the Wii version, or for those of you who still have the original, try 34BFFCA0 or 34BFFCA3. I can't believe I remember those after all these years.

Choosing between SNK Baseball Stars and Tecmo Super Bowl is like the Yankees dropping below a $200 million payroll and becoming a likeable team - in other words impossible.
Some of my most unpleasant memories as a kid was throwing in SNK only to find the memory completely erased.
Random thoughts about Tecmo - was there any force stronger than the Steelers secondary towards the end of the season when the computer got nasty? Woodson would race 40 yards back and pick off every other pass.
Most fun offense - Houston Oilers 4 WR spread. Givens in the slot was unstoppable. You didn't even risk running from the 1 yard line though because White fumled all of the time.
The Rams were a solid second choice with Ellard and Flipper Anderson going deep.
Favorite player - I understand the love for Bo, but Christian Okoye knocking off eight tacklers at a time was unbeatable.
Best offense player - QB eagles. Name someone other than Cunningham who could throw for 10,000 yards and rush for another 3,000.
Best defensive player - LT and Derrick Thomas. Having a solid safety you could bring up always worked well, like Fulcher on Cincinatti or Lott.
Best team - 49ers were pretty sweet. Can't go wrong with the Bills, Giants and Chiefs either.
Worst teams - tie between the Colts and Patriots. Things have certainly changed in 17 years.

Baseball Stars is still pound-for-pound the best baseball game ever.
this game is the only reason I still have an 8-bit Nintendo.

By the way:

1. Baseball Stars (by far the best sports game).
2. Bases Loaded
3. Blades of Steel (fighting for sure!)
4. Bad News Baseball was pretty fun too.
I cant believe nobody mentioned Front Page Sports Football 94. It is hands down the best football game ever for anyone whom wanted to be a coach and draw thier own plays. Nothing comes close.

Superspike Volley Ball is highly underrated. Ice Hockey is a classic. It was always fun to play with a team full of fatties and check the other team until there was no one left to stop you from scoring. That is, if you could make it to the goal in time to shoot before a skinny guy got up and took the puck away.

Little League Baseball was definitely the greatest. Canada was so good, we made a rule that you couldn't use them. Real life often does not imitate art, or video games.

No one played NES Playaction Football?? Loved the player pictures.

Tecmo Bowl, Baseball Stars, SuperSpike V-Ball (wildly underrated), and RBI round out my top 5
