Roger Federer's Most Dominant Athletes

Is Roger Federer the world's most dominant athlete? For the moment, it looks like a two-man race between Federer and his good friend Tiger Woods. The 26-year-old Federer is 12-2 in Grand Slam finals after Sunday's U.S. Open victory, and he is the first man in his sport to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year twice in a row. On Monday, as he relaxed with a handful of writers at the Blue Fin restaurant just outside of Times Square, SI.com asked Federer for a quick list of the world's most dominant athletes (We naturally included the Swiss star in the top five and asked Federer for a couple of additional choices in no particular order.)

His take:

Roger Federer
Tiger Woods
Kobe Bryant
Valentino Rossi
Michael Schumacher (emeritus)

"Tiger is obviously on the list," Federer says. "Kobe Bryant is doing very well. He has played at an incredible level over and over again on a regular basis. Rossi has struggled this year but he has been up there for many years. Michael Schumacher was up there, too, for a long time. But I guess at the moment, it's Tiger and myself.”

Agree with Federer? Give us your list of the world's most dominant athletes.

JT says here's where the list needs to be:
NHL : Sidney Crosby
NFL: Peyton Manning
NBA: Lebron James
MLB: A-Rod
NASCAR: Tony Stewart
Soccer: Ronaldinho
Golf: This is just a given and
doesnt even need to be on the list but Tiger Woods runs the world in everything golf related

ill give a shout out to Kobe, Joe Thorton, Alex Ovechkin and LT for being so nasty at everything they do

I would have to say Michael Phelps, he destroyed everyone at the world championships.

Jessica Alba in the sport of hotness.

LeBron, A-Rod, Tiger, Federer and Jeff Gordon.
Agreed on Michael Phelps...
But to suggest that Peyton, LeBron, or Tony Stewart are anywhere near the dominance that Federer or Woods display is plain ignorance.

Peyton won 1 title in his first 9 years. That's about as dominant as Juan Carlos Ferrero or David Duval.

Tony Stewarts 2 Series wins compared to active leader Jeff Gordon's 4 is slightly better than Nadal to Federer.

And why do people insist on placing LeBron on lists like these? What has he done? Professional Championships: 0. League MVP: 0. Scoring titles: 0. At least ARod and Sid the Kid are the best in their sport at something.

Phelps is probably more dominant than Federer since Federer can't win it all on Clay, and Phelps and Tiger win everywhere.

Typical Americans!! Do not realise there are about 6 billion other ppl in the world!!
Hardly anyo of the athletes mentioned are "dominant".

The following are dominant:

Federer
Tiger
Michael Phelps
Ian Thorpe was
Lance Armstrong was

"Phelps is probably more dominant than Federer since Federer can't win it all on Clay, and Phelps and Tiger win everywhere. "

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard! Pools are not much different in Uruguay than they are in Russia. Golf driveways, greens etc are pretty much the same. In tennis you have vastly different surfaces - clay, grass, hardcourt etc.
You are an idiot.

Michael Phelps is by far the most dominant athlete, bar none. This isn't even a discussion. Phelps could be argued as the most dominant athlete of all-time, let alone today.

Karrelin - (Russian wrestler) - most dominant, by far, of any athlete in the 20th century. Was not even scored upon for several years.
Federer is dominant because men's tennis is watered down these days. .. plus he only competes against half the field each tournament, the other half is eliminated by others. Tiger Woods is truly the most dominant athlete in any sport. He consistently wins at a percentage that is unreal in Golf. .. and when he wins. .. he has beat the entire field.. ..if he misses a putt or a drive. .. he can only look at himself. All these guys in teams sports are only as good as the players around them. .. so to consider them dominate as individuals in a team sport is a little silly. If Peyton offensive does not block, he is average. We already know that just like Jordan, Lebron will not win the big one until you get the right team mates around him.

I have to agree on the Lebron argument. He has not done anything to be put on a list like this. He might in the future very well be a top of everything but so far his name shouldn't be mention in the same sentence as Tiger or Roger. My list goes like this

Roger
Tiger
Phelps
ARod
Kobe

Federer can't win on clay??? but Phelps wins everywhere???? You mean everywhere there's water....stupid comparison. Federer is simply the second best in the world on clay and he may win one on clay soon......

all golf courses are not the same. the euro courses are vastly different than the stateside ones. add in the crazy weather on the links on the coasts and its like playing a different game.

tony stewart, doesnt count, he drives fast...thats it.

crosby, doesnt count, whats the NHL again?

peyton, debatable. hes so far ahead of the game when it comes to reading defenses and picking apart coverages and his defense did let him down a lot. but still, only one ring.

any soccer player, doesnt count, this is america, we like our sports to be entertaining.

lebron is the best all around nba player, but until he wins in the postseason he cant be considered dominant.

there are very few truly dominant athletes. tiger and fed are obviously on there. tom brady is hard to include because he was so bland during the SB's and its hard to argue the dominance of an offensive nfl player seeing as its so team dependant. ray lewis of old was definately dominant, but not anymore.

tiger
federer
johan santana - despite this year's struggles

really thats it. those are the only 3 who actually seem to be on a different level in sports that matter.

oops...phelps counts too. olympic level domination always matters.

federer,
peyton manning
tiger woods
lebron james
kobe bryant

Federer is great but don't forget Borg won the French (slow clay) and Wimbledon (before they changed the tennis balls to slow down the courts) each 3 years in a row. No one will ever do that again.

"Alba in the sport of hotness."
Too funny.

I like the May/Walsh addon also.
Have they lost like 4 matches in 3 years?

Don't know about Rossi.
I would think Kaka would be on the Fed list.

What is a golf driveway? If you don't know anything about a sport, don't comment on it. Every golf course is different, much more so than tennis courts. They all have different dimensions and terrain.

That being said, Federer still rocks.
You say Americans are daft?
Federer is the second best on Clay, I never said he wasn't, but second best isn't exactly dominant then is it?
And as far as the Phelps comparison, try using common sense as to why that would be applicable. Federer dominates on 3 out of 4 surfaces, What race does Phelps not hold a world record in or have a gold medal? Water may be water whatever country you're in, but Olympians don't all swim the same technique in all races do they? And incidentally, golf is very different in parts of the world. You don’t honestly think the British Open courses have the same rough and fairways as Augusta or Pebble Beach?
Edwin Moses has got to be in the mix as well as the others out there. Moses won 107 consecutive finals (122 consecutive races). He set the world record in his event four times. Thats a span of 10 years without losing while breaking the world record 4 times.

Ronaldinho was the top till 2 years ago and will rebound.

lance, tiger and roger....enough said.

Phelps is superhuman. The kid is literally 21 and will smash the record for most golds/medals.He's my pick as the top Followed by Roger then Tiger
Posted: September 11, 2007 11:00 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
phelps, federer, tiger...that's it. based solely on individual sports... they don't have a team to help them dominate. lance had his team.

as for the guy who said this..

"Golf driveways, greens etc are pretty much the same. In tennis you have vastly different surfaces - clay, grass, hardcourt etc."

You kiddin?? Golf venues are the same whereas tennis has more variations?? Then you call some guy an idiot? Golf driveways???whose the idiot haha.
Edwin Moses WAS one of the dominant athletes out there.

Moses won 107 consecutive finals (122 consecutive races). He set the world record in his event four times. Thats a span of 10 years and broke the world record 4 times.

Lance is one to be in the catagory of WAS.

Phelps to me is the most dominant. At 21 he is knocking on the record doors for most medals won. His competition is very little.

Roger is next with a little more competition. Once he overcomes playing on clay then he may jump over.

Tiger next.

Wayne Gretzky 10 scoring titles, 9 mvps, 14 all star selections. All of that and more in a league that at the time was full of talent.

HAVE ANY OF YOU EXPERTS HEARD OF BILL RUSSELL. 11 CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 13 YEARS AND 1 AS A PLAYER/COACH. IF THATS NOT DOMINANT THEN THERE IS NO DOMINANCE.
Posted: September 11, 2007 4:22 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
No one has dominated a difficult sport in the past few years as much as Michael Phelps has dominated swimming. Not Federer; not Tiger; NOBODY period.
Posted: September 11, 2007 4:32 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Anyone who doesn't say Phelps, doesn't know how difficult a sport swimming is. He wins every event at almost every length. The only reason he doesn't win everything is because he can't compete in every event. He usually chooses the most difficult ones like the 400 mt IM.
Posted: September 12, 2007 1:33 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Ricky Carmicheal should actually be at the top of your list. He has dominated motocross for nearly a decade.
Are you kidding? Does anyone watch basketball? Lebron is the most overhyped, overrated player to ever step foot on the court. He has limited shooting ability, doesnt pass when it matters, and basically all he can do is get roided up so he can jump high and dunk, thats it. Reggie Bush is the exquivalent in the NFL. Only two guys dominate their sports;
Tiger
Federer

NFL: Tom Brady(3 rings going on 4)
NBA: Kobe(I hate him but he's sick)
MLB: A-Rod(same as kobe)
Tennis: Federer(And i thought sampras was dominant)
Golf: Tiger(no one is even close)
Comedy: Will Ferrell
Action: Denzel Washington

Perhaps we need separate lists for individual and team sports.

It's impossible to compare the two, especially for something like football (Manning/Brady) with a single performer (Woods/Federer).

Even the nature of golf and tennis are so different. Tennis is 1v1 over more rounds to win a title, golf is 1 vs. the field.

Which one is more forgiving, tennis or golf? If Tiger has a bad day, he can make up for it three other days. In tennis, you're out of the tournament.

If Federer wins the Grand Slam next year (and Tiger doesn't) he will be at the top.

Michael Phelps, May/Walsh, etc. deserve mentioning.

Gary Kasparov anyone??
Irina and Tamar Press; Russian female athletes dominated women's tack and field in the early/mid 1960s; Except they were not women when testing "exposed" them

not to mention the bulked up East German women swimmers/track stars taking who knows what

And now for something a little different:
1. In the clutch, batting a sizzling .441, Derek Jeter.

2. Tiger Woods, of course. The greatest golfer in History.

3. Lance Armstrong.

4. Michael Jordan. (Gone, but not forgotten)

5. John Stockton, the NBA's all-time leader in ASSISTS (he's unselfish) and STEALS (he's wily).

Golf is not a sport, therefore no "athletes". They are participants.
Posted: September 26, 2007 3:35 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Tiger is in a league of his own. Federer matches up against one man per round, while Tiger is up against the ENTIRE FIELD. Now THAT is dominance.

However, no one in their right mind can take away anything that Roger has/continues to do in Tennis.

Ronaldinho and Kobe follow.
Michael Phelps is easily the most dominant athlete on the planet. followed by Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Jeff Gordon and Tom Brady.

IN my opinion to get a list like this, we must forget the athletes emeritus of whatever sports and focus on the guys playing today...because if we considered the old guys, we could never limit the list to 5 people....having said that, my list is as follows:

Roger Federer (tennis): Yes, he hasn't won on clay but neither did Ol Petey (Sampras), and he was still considered the greatest. Roger's dominance is so scary because it is predictable; he will win.

Ricardo Santos Leite aka KAKA (Soccer): The days of ronaldinho are almost over; he is still a great player but when KAKA is on th field these days, watch how the game changes.

Eldrick Tiger Woods (Golf): Ask a non-golfer or non-golf watcher if they know anything about golf and the name Tiger Woods is likely to come up...he single handedly revolutionized the sport and made the rest of the PGA Tour richer.

Michael Phelps (swimming): No arguments here..his dominance speaks for itself. just watch the world championships, and it becomes intuitively obvious to the casual observer...another scary predictable winner.

Tom Brady (Football): Probably the best and most unappreciated quarter back. I am a big Colts fan so in my opinion Peyton Manning is the king however Brady's dominance is so obvious (3 of 4 superbowl rings). Look at the year 2007, and you see what happens when you give Brady a world class receiver like Moss...

TIGER vs. ROGER - A golfer told me 9/10 people know who Tiger is and 9/10 people don't know who Roger Federer is. I said OK! Now just find me 1 on this plane that will bet that in 2008 Tiger wins more majors than Roger? NO RESPONSE! In 2008 Tiger will try to win the PGA Championships for the 2nd year in a row. WOW! Roger in 2008 will try to win the Australian Open for the 3rd year in a row, The U.S. Open for the 5th year in a row, and Wimbldon for the 6th year in a row. Need I say more? O.K. I will! If Roger wins 3/4 grand slams like he did in 2006 and 2007 he will be the all time majors leader in his sport at age 26 passing Pete Sampras record of 14. Tiger at age 31 can't he still needs 6 more majors to pass Jack N. record of 18. Finally Tiger dominates a field of overweight old men who never get eliminated in any of the 4 rounds. Roger dominates a field of young studs in their prime.
Posted: December 12, 2007 2:04 PM   by Anonymous THE TRUTH
GOLF vs. TENNIS - Play 4 rounds of golf and you can win a major. Play 7 rounds of tennis and you can win a tennis major. Have a bad round of golf? DON'T WORRY! your total scores are added so nobody gets eliminated in any of the rounds they play. Have a bad round of tennis and YOUR OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT. A tennis ball can move over 140-mph and you have to swing and move your feet in all directions to get it back. A golf ball moves at 0-mph and you are practically standing still before you hit it. Golf is played on grass. Tennis is played on grass, clay, hardcourt, and synthetic surface. Tiger dominates a field of overweight old farts who never get eliminated in any of the rounds. Roger dominates a field of young gun studs in their prime. Finally, Tiger himself along with Pete Sampras called Roger Federer the most dominant athlete on the planet. You may disagree, but you, your golf buddy, or any sportswriter does not know more about being dominant in a sport than Tiger or Pete.
Posted: December 18, 2007 9:20 AM   by Anonymous Gary P
on Tiger vs Roger, yes I agree with all the streaks Roger is going on. However I do think Tiger and Roger are equally as dominant. to make my case, Roger plays seven rounds to get a victory, and Tiger plays only four. but in order to compare these rounds, you have to make all the Major championships single elimination matchplay, and see if Tiger won't dominate the entire field.

Oh and in golf, half the field gets eliminated after the second round (learn the facts before making an argument). Also when you get the chance too, look at the top 20 in the world golf rankings, the average age : 30.15 Tiger's Age 32 in 2 weeks, so who are these old farts you are referring to???

The Major difference between Tiger and Roger is the single match elimination...Roger is better than any of those guys so when he play them, he wins. In a stroke play event, Tiger has about 120 guys any of whom can shoot just one stroke (equivalent to one point in tennis) better than him, and he finishes second(might I remind you that that was the case in both the Masters and US Open this year---he finished second in both)> Tiger and Roger are my favorite athletes and I really do think they are equally as dominant.

PS: Tiger is going for his third straight PGA, not second. Where do you get you stuff ??

If anyone in America knew who Rossi was, he'd be at the top.

Multi 250cc world champion
Multi 500cc world champion
Multi 800cc 4 stroke world champion...(on a bad bike)

A 500CC GP bike is the fastest, best handling, best braking, most explosively powerful, most harrowing thing EVER to go around a race track (according to F1 ace Schumacher...)
