Favorite Female Wrestlers

The Fabulous Moolah
The Fabulous Moolah was taking a beating in the ring right up until a few years ago.
AP
By Jimmy Traina, SI.com

The Fabulous Moolah passed away at the age of 84 last Friday. We thought we'd honor the legendary grappler -- who was still mixing it up in the ring until the last few years -- by discussing our all-time favorite ladies in professional wrestling.

5. Wendi Richter: She beat Moolah for the title in the early '80s and was a big part of the "Rock-and-Wrestling" era that featured Cyndi Lauper getting involved with the WWF.

4. Chyna: She's become a sad tabloid/reality show joke these days, but when she first started in the WWE, wrestling hadn't quite seen anything like her. She was actually an intriguing "character" for long period of time.

3. Miss Elizabeth: Randy "Macho Man" Savage's manager came onto the scene in the mid '80s and barely spoke. It didn't matter. She instantly became a fan favorite and was the local point of several storylines.

2. Trish Stratus: Who doesn't love a little Stratusfaction? Straus is probably the best "wrestler" among the WWE divas who are more known for their looks that their in-ring ability.

1. Stacey Keibler: She started in WCW as Miss Handcock and later brought her act to the WWE where just the act of her getting into the ring made fans very very happy.

Here's our list, let's see yours.

UPDATE: Tues., 3:18 p.m.: A lot of you seem to be upset that this list is a mix of wrestlers and managers/valets. I've listed my five favorite females who have been apart of wrestling. If you want to list your favorite female wrestlers, go for it. If you just want to stick to managers, that's cool, too. If you want to combine them, like I did, that's OK, also.

Molly Holly carried the Women's Division for years.

WWE can put out all the eye candy they want, but for true in-ring talent, Molly was supreme!

Too bad injuries sidelined Lita....because she had serious athleticism....for the five minutes she was in the WWE, Gail Kim was pretty impressive too.

The late "Sensational Sherri" Martel was the toughest and most complete female wrestler ever. She went on to become manager of a young Shawn Michaels, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and in WCW she managed Harlem Heat

No Lita? Great looks and can kick it just like Trish. Miss Elizabeth was a valet not a wrestler.

Stacy Keibler and Miss Elizabeth are NOT wrestlers. They are just pretty face valets.
Posted: November 5, 2007 8:18 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Another often overlooked but outstanding lady wrestler is Jacqueline Moore, a 2 time WWE women's champion who is currently competing in TNA as "The Pride of Tennessee", even though she is really from Texas.

BTW, Stacy Kiebler actually started in WCW as Nitro Girl Sky.

R.I.P. Fabulous One. You will be missed.

1. Torrie Wilson

2. Stephanie McMahon

Moolah and Richter yes, the rerst of your list, forget it. Penny Banner, Akira Hokuto, Judy Grable, Mildred Burke, Ann Casey, Donna Christianello are wrestlers. The WWE has no female wrestlers now, just a bunch of women pretending to be athletes.
Posted: November 5, 2007 9:53 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Surprisingly, no one has mentioned Medusa Micelli, or as she was known in WWE, Alundra Blayze. Ms. Micelli is a now retired 3 time WWE and 1 time AWA women's champion. She also won the WCW Cruiserweight championship on one occasion.

Her most memorable moment may be her first appearance on WCW Monday Nitro. She stood on the announcer's stand between Eric Bischoff and Tony Schiavone and dropped the WWE Women's Championship Belt into a trash can!

this list should include; Sable (the #1 female wrestler, she actually wrestled and carried the women's divison for years, kiebler did not, but u can't deny kiebler's beauty) Sunny, Torrie Wilson, Kimberly Page, Debra; Newcomers; Christy Hemme, Candice Michelle, Mickie James, Maria. I could prob name more but these are just a few that should be on the list

Trish and Stacy are the best wrestlers of all time!! Their in-ring moves are outstanding. They are good role models and great athletes. It is sad to see them both retire from the company. However it is understandable. The wwe impresses us all. I hope the wwe is something I can watch with my kids when the time comes like my parents did with me>> KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

Let's give some credit to the current TNA women's champion, Gail Kim. She has the in-ring ability and the looks to put her at the top of the list.

JT says

I can remember the days when Sable escorted Marvelous Marc Mero to the ring, she was hotter than a spicy chili in a microwave, when she had that bikini contest where she got disqualified for body paint which did lead her to playboy.

Sunny is a close second, when traded from those losers in spandex and went with the Godwin's. To see such a pretty face with slop all over it was priceless

Molly Holly & Trish Stratus were both awesome in the ring. Meduca Micelli was a great female wrestler, too.
Currently - Victoria, Gail Kim (NWATNA), Beth Phoenix and Mickie James are all excellent in-ring workers.
No pictures make this story full of fail

Wendy Richter was a joke. The only reason she is even recognized is not because of her skills in the ring or even as a champion, it is because of Cindy Lauper, and Cindy Lauper alone. That is the only reason she even won the belt. The additions I would make are Sable, she started as Johhny B. Badd's manager, and then later came into her own. She was the first of the WWE Divas to pose for Playboy. Talk about Playboy, you can't forget Tori Wilson. Then there was Matt Hardy's girlfriend/the mother of Kane's baby Lita, she could fly with the best of them, and wrestle too. Last but not least, Debra. SHe later became Stone Cold Steve Austin's wife.

I wouldn't say that either Miss Elizabeth or Stacy Kiebler were wrestlers. They may have had a few matches, but were merely eye candy to put over a male star.
Posted: November 6, 2007 12:51 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
No one is remembering current WWE diva Melina... she gets extra points from me for her entrance where she does the splits upon entering the ring. Also Beth Phoenix, aka the Glamazon, is pretty enough to be a diva and strong like Chyna was. Trish is the best of my generation. How I'd love to get a piece of her Stratusfaction!
Posted: November 6, 2007 2:12 PM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Ok, are we talking about "Favorite Female Wrestlers" or "Performers"? When you're talking about Female Wrestlers, you have to mention "The Fabulous Moolah", "Sensational" Sherri Martel, Lita, Medusa, and Ivory. Speaking of "Performers", then you have the Sables, Kieblers, Torrie Wilsons, Candice Michelles, and the worst, Marias.

Although Miss Elizabeth was great to look at, she was neither a wrestler nor performer. She was a valet that the WWE used in storylines and didn't even get in the ring to wrestle until her later days in the WCW...right before it collapsed.

The female talent today are more to look at, as demonstrated in the diva searches and "diva" paraphernalia. The real "wrestlers" are in the past to stay.
Is Stacy was not in Dancing with the Stars then she wouldn't be on anybody's list! Miss Elizabeth didn't wrestle but she was great for the sport. Lita was the most exciting wrestler with her high flying moves. Molly Holly was also a great wrestler.

I could give a list of 20 female wrestlers and still not list all the ones I like. But I'm doing the best I can by providing 20 stand out names of women who have stepped into the ring at one time or another. These aren't all the good ones, but they're my favorites.

I love Miss Elizabeth and Stacy Keibler but neither of them exactly tore it up when it came to applying headlocks and full nelsons. Moolah and Mae Young may not be much to look at but they wrestled circles around the arm candy girls and valets.

I'm breaking my list into two to separate the lovely ladies who worked as managers and such from those who got down and dirty in the ring.

Valets, Managers and various forms of arm candy
10. Ashley Massaro
9. The Kat
8. Debra (Hey, she married Stone Cold and Steve McMichael, she should get credit for that alone.)
7. Michelle Mccool (A promising young woman, if only WWE would quit pairing her up with losers)
6. Terri Runnels (Terri married Golddust, and other than that she could convince a man of good virtue to do practically anything, she had THAT much sex appeal )
5. Luna Vachon
4. Miss Elizabeth
3. Sherri Martel
3. Sable
2. Stacy Kiebler
1. Torrie Wilson

Lady Wrestlers
10. (tie) Gail Kim/Mickie James
9. Fabulous Moolah
8. Jacqueline
7. Victoria
6. Ivory
5. Molly Holly
4. Medusa
3. Chyna
2. Lita
1. Trish Stratus

Trish could flat out do everything, and she started out as just a pretty face but unlike others she worked hard at it and came to be recognized as a great wrestler. She will be one of the first (if not THE first) female wrestler to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame from the modern era.

All of these ladies are/were incredible at what they do, and they deserve to be recognized. I know I probably missed a bunch but I this was a very deserving group of ladies.

How could you forget about Kurt Angle?.....could there be a bigger diva?....lol
Posted: November 7, 2007 10:14 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
You have neglected the girl wrestlers that were wrestlers. Mildred Burke, June Byers, Mae Young, Vivan Vachon, Theresa Theis,
Kay Nobel, Violet Ray and so many more. Professional girl wrestling dates back to the early 1900's, not on the advent of the cable TV era. No disrespct to Moolah or to the modern girls, however, the history of the sport is not lmited to those of the modern era. ... Kayfabian
I am a long time fan and long time partcipant in pro wrestling, I've seen alot of Lady wrestlers in the day. My top 10 favorites (not saying these were the best, most famous or most influental but rather those I have enjoyed watching perform the most)

1. Sherri Martel- just showed so much in the ring and out
2. Fabulous Moolah- she was the queen of the ring
3. Candi Devine- always put on an entertaining match
4. Lita- Worked with her some on her way up the ladder. Good wrestler.
5. Toni Rose- a great heel in the 1960's and 1970s
6. Micki James- worked with her a lot when she started out as Alexis Laree- held my old promotions (SCW) Diva title for 3 years.
7. Brandi Wine- great girl from the indy wrestling Circut
8. Lexie Fyfe- another great girl who never got to shine on the big stage
9. Lelani Kai- another good female heel of the 1970's and 1980's
10. Penny Banner- another lady who was a star in the 1960's.

I'm a long-time fan of Victoria (Lisa Marie Varon). She is one of the few current WWE divas with actual physical ability, and has been with the WWE longer than anyone else in that too-small group (five years, plus earlier service as one of the Godfather's "hoes.")

Madusa will always be my favorite. I met her once at an WCW promo event. She jumped over the autograph table and gave me a hug I will never forget.
First, I am going to preface my list by stating that I am going by overall importance to the industry, rather than purely based on wrestling skill, although, that does factor into it heavily.

1. Fabulous Moolah. How she can't be #1 on everyone's lists amazes me. Without Moolah, there are no women wrestlers anymore, period. She held the Women's title for what, 100 years?

2. Miss Elizabeth. She never actually wrestled to the best of my knowledge, but, was extremely important in the biggest WWF storylines of the 1980s. Between Savage/Steele, there was Elizabeth. The secret weapon of the Mega-Powers (Savage&Hogan) there was Elizabeth. Acting as foil for Sensational Sherri during the Macho King era? There was Elizabeth. The best part of one Summerslam? Savage and Elizabeth's "wedding". She never wrestled, but was perhaps the single most beloved woman ever involved in pro wrestling.

3. Sensational Sherri Martel. If Elizabeth gets my #2 spot, her evil counterpart gets #3. Sherri was a fantastic wrestler during her day, but she was an even better valet/manager. I remember, as a young teen, trying to reconcile my love of the Macho Man Randy Savage, with my vile hatred of Sherri, his manager. Then, I had to do the same with Shawn Michaels. Sherri was as hated as Miss Elizabeth was beloved. She, like Elizabeth, played an intregral role in WWF Storylines.

#4. Trish Stratus. Pound for pound, the best female wrestler I have ever seen. She didn't start out that way. She started out as a fitness model who gave wrestling a try. But, Trish worked and worked to improve her ring skills, and by the time she left, she was the best female wrestler I have ever seen, because of her dedication in always trying to become better.

#5. Chyna. I really don't want to put her here. I hate Chyna. I always have. However, I cannot discount her role during the WWF Attitude era. She was a freak of nature, wrestling the men, and looking competent doing it. Chyna was a male wrestler trapped inside a female wrestler's steroid assisted body. The fact that the WWF didn't limit her to wrestling the other women, and let her feud with the boys, even beating Jeff Jarrett for the Intercontinental title, has to be acknowledged as groundbreaking. She didn't just beat the women, she was beating the men too.

Honorable Mention:Molly Holly, Ivory, Jacqueline, Sable, Alundra Blaze/Medusa Micelli, Sunny, Missy Hyatt.

Possible update to the list in 10 years:Mickie James. She isn't good enough to be in my top 5. YET. But, so far, she impresses the heck out of me. She just hasn't had a long enough career in the WWE for me to include her. That could easily change later though, as well as Melina. Both of these ladies are wrestlers, not just divas.
Sunny. That's it.

1. Kiebler
2. Sunny
3. Sable
4. Dawn Marie

Sable come on!

1- Sherri Martel
2- Chyna
3- Trish
4- Madusa
5- Sunny
6- Sable
7- Elizabeth
8- Jacqueline
9- Luna
10-Fabulous Moolah

others who rocked it:
Tori, Ivory, Molly Holly, Woman, Victoria, Beth Phoenix, Melina, Gail Kim, Terri, Lita, Jazz, Traci Brooks, Dawn Marie, Francine, April Hunter, Debra, Michelle McCool, Midajah O'hearn and Candice Michelle.

There may be a few more i'm missing but I prefer the real wrestlers and the managers/valets who really contributed something new/unique.
Posted: November 8, 2007 1:49 AM   by Anonymous Anonymous
Two words: Megumi. Kudo. You want ladies who can WRESTLE (i know, it's a dirty word in WWE) go east young man, and find a little Joshi.

I'm tired of seeing managers who wrestled (Elizabeth), Playboy Bunnies (Torrie, Candice, Sable) and people who regularly botched their finishers (Lita & Trish) on this list.

As far as American women:
1) Alexis Laree/Mickie James
2) Beth Phoenix
3) April Hunter
4) Gail Kim
5) Amazing Kong
6) Sara Del Ray

You can thank me later for expanding your horizons.

~Phoenix

Like the old Beatles song goes, "It was 20 years ago today". I haven't seen ANYONE mention one of the best female tag teams I ever saw make their WWF debut at the Survivor series in NOV 1987. They were Noriyo Tateno and Itsuki Yamazaki, AKA "The Jumping Bomb Angels". They were the most amazing, gifted, athletic, female wrestlers I ever saw. Although their stint in the WWF was short-lived,I can still remember their matches against the "Glamour Girls" (Leilani Kai & Judy Martin). They won the Women's tag title in a 2 out of 3 falls at the Royal Rumble in 1988.What they both could do simultaneously off the top ropes & ringposts was incredible.

They go back to the 1970's, but Miss Betty Nicoli and Jean Antone should be on the list if Kay Nobel is on it.

Say does anyone remember CBS Sports in the early '70's playing Helen Reddy's "I am Woman" to clips of a women's tag team match?

Are you guys seriously forgetting the greatest of them all...LITA you guys keep mentioning Trish as the "best wrestler" but think about it if Lita wouldn't have been there there wouldnt be a Trish or many of these women that compete in any ring today...She got both men and women and kids interested in women's wrestling...She is the definition of a DIVA...WWE and the rest of the wrestling world seem to have forgotten what she has done for wrestling...Trish only has seven reigns as women's champ because Lita was absent for a year...Trish was NOTHING without LITA!
Lita was in all the swimsuit magazines, she had the best wrestling move, she should of been champ, none of the divas could compare!

Robbase86 you should do some research. Lita was WWF/WWE Women's Champion four times! She beat in order : Stephanie McMahon (no great achievement, I know) on August 21, 2000; Trish Stratus on December 6, 2004; Mickie James on August 14, 2006 and on November 5, 2006, Lita defeated Mickie James again (in a Lumberjills match, or as they call it in WWE a Divas Lumberjack match, that was a tournament final).

To the person who said "why not a picture of keibler instead of moolah. even richter over moolah"
The reason the Fabulous Moolah's picture is there is because this column was written in tribute after her passing.

R.I.P. Moolah.
Who can forget Miss Vicky Williams! She had beauty and was a great Wrestler. Her bouts with The Fabulous Moolah are priceless. Both of them in their prime would wipe the mats with the Female Wrestlers of today!!
