Most bizarre retro uniforms
The Penguins wore their original look for the NHL's first outdoor game in the U.S.

Last week, the Lakers attracted chuckles for wearing their short shorts from the 1980s in a game against the Celtics. No doubt, it was an arresting sight if all you've known are the long baggies favored by NBA players since Michael Jordan's heyday. Likewise, if you tuned into the NHL's Winter Classic on New Year's Day, you might have blinked at those Penguins in sky blue and white with the round crest on their chests – not necessarily bizzare, but a strange sight after almost 30 years of Pittsburgh black and gold.
Here are five more retro looks that are sure to jar your senses when, and if, they are rolled out.
5.. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1976-97 : The creamsicle orange and white theme, not to mention Bucco Bruce (the guy in the fruity feathered hat on the helmet) made these fitting threads for a team that went 2-26 in its first two seasons, and 100-223 in its first 20.
4. Vancouver Canucks, 1978-85: The orange and black V from shoulder to belly button (in lieu of a crest) and yellow base made them look like highway construction signs on skates.
3. Denver Nuggets, 1981-93: They looked like they belonged in a pre-school classroom with their cheery primary color scheme and horizontal rainbow, city skyline and white mountain range across the chest.
2. New York Islanders, 1995-96: The infamous Fish Sticks threads with the Gorton's of Gloucester fisherman crest and blue, orange and ocean green waves at the bottom of the sweater. No wonder Isles' fans revolted. The uniform made them seasick.
1. Chicago White Sox, 1976: One of Bill Veeck's most zany schemes: white untucked shirts with dark blue collars, and to the players' mortification, shorts and knee socks.
What surprising or weird retro uniforms are on your list? Let us know below…
How about those lime green Redsox uniforms...I dont remember those and Ive been a fan for 40 + years..I think they had some guy locked away in the basement of fenway come up with those. The best are allows the mini shorts for all of the early days of Basketball. My god what were we thinking. To see a towering Robert Parish in mini shorts gives me the shivers.I sure would like to see some pics of some of these uniforms from the early days of sports so we can vote on the worst and then ask the guy who came up with them if he had just one to many.
Any gymnastic uniform from the USSR prior to Glasnost. The designer of those things should be sent to Siberia. The American Ryder Cup unis from Brookline were ghastly as well. Recalling Justin Leonard sink that long putt and jump like a little girl in that hideous golf shirt has forever tarnished what could have been very memorable moment.
No argument about the top 5 but the Dolphins came out in an orange jersey a couple of years ago and have not won too many since then! Also, the Irish came out in Green a few years back( Which I think SHOULD be their colors) - they have not done as well since, either!
I am also in complete agreement about the baseball teams ugly uniforms (Like the Padres and Astros) but you'd have to add the Pirates in yellow and black convict strips to make me happier!
While the Vancouver Canucks have a long history of bad uniforms, and the Houston Astros had those "orange rainbow" things (oddly enough, they are classic today), I still think that the Padres uniforms when McDonalds owner Ray Kroc owned them were by far the worst.
The uniforms the players wore, easily reminded one of that team every time you entered a McDonalds restaurant. Perhaps that was the point. A pity he didn't make the players wear those paper hats.
I don't have a link to a picture, but the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League used to wear a retro style jersey. "Rochester" was spelled out diagonally across the front and it had the lace up neck. The odd part was it was teal. I don't know how teal can be retro, at least not yet.
This years Syracuse Orange football uniforms. How was the dummy that suggest they put a "S" on the helmet and to go back to the 60's jerseys. Oh yeah, the AD who has in three years made SU football one of the worse in the country.
