Everyone in sports has a role. Some guys are the stars, some are the benchwarmers. And then there are the guys charged with keeping the team loose. Some of them have sharp senses of humor, just are just plain nuts. So today, April Fool's Day, let's celebrate the biggest pranksters in sports. (Honorable mention to Charles Barkley for this.)
1. Roger McDowell: From his wigs in the MTV Rock and Jock games to his penchant for lighting teammate's feet aflame, the former relief pitcher will always be known for being "the spitter" on Seinfeld.
2. Gilbert Arenas: As a rookie, Arenas was known for stealing teammates' clothes and bringing baby powder-covered doughnuts to practice and claiming they were sugar-coated. He's still involved in all sorts of shenanigans. He blogs about them, too.
3. The New York Giants: From Grey Ruegamer to Eli Manning, the Giants reportedly have several pranksters. Manning, for example, reportedly wielded silly sting throughout training camp. Apparently the teams that play together win together.
4. Michael Llodra: Anyone who hides naked in another person's locker makes this list. Even if he is a French tennis star.
I had Jay Johnstone's book from a while back. I think the funniest story he told was tying Tommy Lasorda into his dorm room at Dodgertown in Vero Beach. Apparently, Tommy had a room at the far end of the row of rooms. When Tommy was gone, he and a few other Dodgers broke into his room and stole the speaking part out of his phone. Tommy tried to use the phone, but it didn't work, so he used another phone in one of the coach's rooms. Remember, no cell phones, internet, or Blackberries.
After Tommy went to bed, Jay and the others went back to Tommy room. The door opened inward. The palm tree was right outside. The rope was plenty long. Tommy was tied into his room for over two hours. Tommy did get back at Jay: Tommy made Jay play the entire road spring training game on two hours sleep at a position (first base) he had never played much. While he was playing Tommy stole all his clothes so Jay had to ride back to Dodgertown in his uniform.
