Most Memorable Sopranos Moments

The Sopranos
Carmela, Tony and Meadow have just nine more episodes left.
The past couple of weeks have been a fun time to be a sports fan. We've had the NCAA Tournament, Opening Day in Major League Baseball, WrestleMania and the Masters. This Sunday night another event takes place. It has nothing to do with sports, but it should still be discussed -- the first episode of The Sopranos' final season.

When all is said and done, The Sopranos will go down as one of the top five dramas of all time. And while recent storylines and absurdly long hiatuses have hurt ratings and upset viewers, nobody should forget that for the first three or four seasons, this was the most-buzzed about show of its time. With that, here are the 10 Most Memorable Sopranos Moments. When you're done reading my list, be sure to send me yours.

1. Pine Barrens: This was the episode in which Christopher and Paulie had an altercation with a big Russian and ended up chasing him through the woods and snow. It was the funniest episode in the show's history, but also one of the most frustrating since fans wanted the Russian to reappear. Hmm, maybe this season. The entire episode is on YouTube, but here's a short clip (WARNING: this clip and others that follow are filled with profanities) that sums up a show that's nothing short of genius.

2. Tony, Silvio and Paulie kill Big Pussy: We knew it was going to happen, but it was still riveting television. From the foursome sharing tequila shots on a boat to Pussy asking not to be shot in the face to Tony, Silvio and Paulie throwing Pussy's dead body overboard, this was The Sopranos at its peak.

3. Janice shoots Richie Aprile: Unlike the previously mentioned shooting, this one was a shock. Richie had become a big headache for Tony, so you knew he'd be "taken care of." Nobody could've guessed Janice, who had just been punched in the face by boyfriend Richie right after cooking and serving him dinner, would be the one to do the job.

4. Uncle Junior shoots Tony: Part of the reason The Sopranos was so good during its first few seasons was Uncle Junior. The character always had the most memorable lines. But once the show gave him Alzheimer's, the character was wasted. He briefly returned to the spotlight in the first episode last season, when, in a state of confusion, he shot his nephew and then hid in a closet while Tony bled and struggled to phone for help.

5. Tony and Christopher put Ralphie's head in a bowling ball bag: Ralphie had become a thorn in Tony's side, but it wasn't business that caused Tony to snap. It was Ralphie burning down a stable in which Tony's horse, Pie-O-My, resided. After denying his involvement, Ralphie finally snapped, and said, "So what, it was only a horse." Bad move. Next thing you know, Tony strangled Ralphie to death after a scuffle in which Ralphie's toupee came flying off. To cover up the murder, Tony and Christopher chopped up Ralphie and put his head in a bowling ball bag.

6. Silvio kills Adriana: The storyline where Adriana was forced to become a government informant was one of the show's best. It culminated with Tony's crew creating a clever scheme (telling Adriana that addict boyfriend Christopher -- or, as she says it, Christafa -- had suffered a relapse) to get her alone. When Silvio picked up Adriana to take her to see Christopher, everyone knew the brass tough girl was history. And no one will forget the way she crawled away, begging for her life -- to no avail.

7. Janice steals her mother's caretaker's leg: I'm not sure what else needs to be said. Tony had hired a woman to look after his mother, Livia. The aide had a prosthetic leg. After Livia died, Janice wanted the caretaker to return Livia's record collection (which Livia gave to the aide). When the caretaker refused, Janice stole the woman's leg -- and held it for ransom (the records).

8. Carmela throws out Tony: Some fans thought this episode was too "soap opera-y," (Carmela got wind of yet another one of Tony's affairs after his mistress' friend who used to be Tony's old mistress called the Sopranos' home), but I disagree. The performance by Edie Falco, who couldn't have done a better job conveying Carmela's raw pain, was unforgettable.

9. Dr. Melfi gets raped: Like the episode with the Russian in the woods, this one left fans frustrated because they wanted Dr. Melfi to tell Tony she was raped. But that doesn't mean the show didn't leave an impression. The rape scene was disturbing and you had a hard time believing it was happening. Still, it was the episode's final scene that I'll never forget. Tony sensed something was wrong, prodded Melfi to tell him what happened, but, knowing Tony would kill the rapist, she kept the incident to herself. Powerful television.

10. Horrible special effects used to show Livia: I don't know if many people remember this, but after actress Nancy Marchand passed away, her character Livia appeared in one episode thanks to special effects that turned out to be anything but special. The show took past dialogue from Livia and poorly synched it up with and old scene of her sitting on a chair. The results were awful. You couldn't focus on the dialogue because the effects were so distracting. And it was even creepier to watch when you remembered that Marchand was dead. This Newark Star-Ledger article explains this mess better than I did.

What are you most memorable Sopranos moments? Let me know.

(Update: 3:30 p.m., ET -- Remember to keep the comments clean. A lot of good comments aren't getting posted because of words or content that can't be published. Using three of the four letters of a curse word with one asterik won't make the cut. If you're quoting the show, and you need to mention a curse word, just use "blank." Thanks)

Good list Jimmy. One of my favorite episodes was when a newly "made" Christopher sticks Pauley with the check after an elaborate dinner. Christopher is then sitting outside the pork store and an irate Pauley pulls up in his Caddy demanding money. Pauley finally gets him back in AC by running up the bill, including sending "those skanks" a bottle of champagne. Walking outside after the dinner, Pauley gloats "after a meal like that I could use a good piece of a$$!" Christopher follows by telling Pauley that he should just go f**k himself instead. All is well when the waiter confronts Christopher on a shorted tip and they end up killing the guy, which bonds Christopher and Pauley once again. Most scenes betweent these two characters over the history of the show have been great.
Nice list, but you're missing one great moment:

Tony and Meadow visit colleges - arguably the greatest episode ever, it perfectly captures the balancing act Tony must maintain between the two "families. Tony takes his daughter on a tour of colleges but then sees a former informant who is in witness protection. While Meadow is looking at schools, Tony coldly strangles the rat to death, then returns to pick up his daughter as if nothing happened. And, of course, all of this was happening while Carmela almost hooked up with the priest back at home - simply the best episode ever.

If you're a Sopranos fans, and you seem to be, check this out. It's all you need to know about the show in 7 minutes. Good list, by the way.

If we’re talking memorable moments, not necessarily best episodes, then you have to include the episode when Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni wept when he was escorted by the marshals from his daughter’s wedding. Apparently, he lost face with his main guy--Phil. Yet, Tony defended him; chalking it up to his love for his daughter.

What...no F***ing Ziti?

One of the great lines of all time!
My favorite is when Richie Apriel goes to visit Beansy at his pizza place after he gets out of jail.

"Veal Parmigana Sandwich?"

1. Junior hiding in the back of a limo when a guy is signed up to kill tony.

2. Feech LaManna tries to take over Paulie's landscaping business

3. Vito confronting Finn outside port-a-potty

4. Johnny Sack doing anything

5. Paulie kills old lady

6. Burt Young smoking after he killed those guys

7. Paulie and Chrissie killing that waiter
Posted: 10:34 AM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Best line of the series...Gigi Cestrone dies of a bowel induced heart attack to which Pauley says "...the silent killer." Hilarious!

Funniest scene – When the gang stages what is supposed to be a “non-judgmental” intervention for Chris-tu-fuh, and Tony and Paulie start to beat him, mainly because Chris sat on and snuffed Adriana’s dog.

Agree that the split-up arguments b/w Tony and Carmella were great, particularly when they moved it to the pool house. And agree with a reader that all scenes between Paulie Walnuts and Chris are consistently great.

Great scene from last season (yes, it’s true). When Tony picked up AJ from the police station after AJ got busted brining a gun into the mental hospital/prison housing Uncle Jun. Tony tries to explain to his son that he just doesn’t have the violent nature for that kind of life and that it’s OK. Maybe it’s because I’m a dad but I love that scene.

Funniest line. Tony starts fooling around with Ralphie’s ex, who shares dirt about Ralph’s fetishes. Tony asks Sil if he thinks Ralphie has problems with women. “I don’t Ton, he did beat a girl to death . . . for something.”
I think we need to put some focus not only on Tony, but on his boys and THEIR penchant for major issues with minor problems, especially silvio, the levelheaded one. Remember the soccer coach? Silvio at the game in a wifebeater tank and short, but still wearing Italian loafers and socks? Or how about the Christopher Columbus protest where Artie Bucco his in the car after getting a Slurpy dumped on his head?
And we could never forget when Pats Parisi, drunk and mourning his dead twin, shows up at Tony's house and uses the pool for a urinal after deciding not to shoot Tony.
But Tony has had his detractors, too. Don't forget that, before she actually cheated on him during their separation with AJ's guidance counselor, Carmela developed crushes for Father Intintola, the contractor who was redoing the interior of the house, and Furio (who was THIS CLOSE to pushing Tony into the helicopter rotor at the casino.)
Considering how everyone left satriale's at the end of the last episode, I'd be surprised if an inner conspiracy wasn't brewing to take out Tony... by his closest friends.

Another great moment is when Christopher comes into the Badda-Bing waving a gun around because he thinks Tony is sleeping with Adriana. Which leads to Tony taking Christopher outside, putting him on his knees and is about to shoot him in the head until the gang intervenes.
Posted: 11:32 AM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
I agree anything with Christopher and Paulie is instant classic. Also agree you should of included the Christopher intervention. Absolutely hilarious!!!!
Posted: 11:44 AM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Don't forget the episode when Paulie bursts into Christopher and Ade's apartment when he thought Christopher was shortcutting him; and during his search, Paulie sniffed Ade's panties!!!
My favorite was when Tony and one of his mistresses get in an argument and she throws the london broil at Tony...
Posted: 12:07 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anita K
One of my favorite episode's is Christofa's "Intervention." What a hoot-I loved when he starts trashing Tony for his weight issues and even his own "Ma" at what is suppose to be his intervention. Talk about turning the tables. I also loved the episode when Meadow was sick and playing Scrabble in her dorm room with Jackie Jr. Jackie was so dumb, all the words he could think of were pooh and ass. His pronounciation of oblique as "o-blee-k was classic!
Posted: 12:11 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Paulie Walnuts in either season 1 or 2 when he goes to see the guy who can contact the dead and flips out because he thinks he's haunted...too funny.

I also like little carmine "I have 7 movies under my subspecies" ...priceless
Posted: 12:12 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
perhaps the episode in which Meadow buys Speed from christopher to help her study for her SATs - christophers performance is excellent. as well, who could forget when the Hasidic target is telling the story of masada and he says "where are the romans now?" to which tony replies "youre looking at them"
brilliant tv.

I think the Janice shoots Richie Aprille episode was the best. Really, with all the shocking things that have happened in the series, that had to be the most shocking.

And I really think the "Russian, Snow" episode is highly overrated. There's all this Soprano lore about this episode, whether he would come back or not, but Paulie and Christopher freezing in a car. Big Deal. That episode dragged.
Posted: 12:27 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
I loved Tony's therapy session after Vito was outed. He tells Dr. Melfi that gangsters can't be gay, but then makes an exception for guys in prison on the grounds that there are no other options. When she asks about his time in prison, Tony is real quick to point out that he never never did anything like that.
Who can forget Livia's funeral and the surreal scene in Tony's living room when Janice asks the guests to recall their favorite remembrances of the deceased? Christopher goes on a hilarious drug induced rant. Easily one of the funniest scenes.
Posted: 12:45 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Are you kidding me? Who doesn't remember: "I love you too, Johnny Cakes".
Posted: 1:50 PM, April 06, 2007   by Brad
Thanks everyone. I don't have a line or moment but I am sitting at my desk laughing about all of this.

The only comment I will make is if you dog on the Pine Barrons episode then I feel bad for you because you obviously don't get what things make the show so unique and good. Which means half of the great moments over the last 5 seasons have gone right over your head.
Posted: 1:53 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
The "What could have been..." seen that was classic was when Dr. Melfi was raped and TOny knew something was wrong, and the scene ended with Tony asking what was wrong, but Melfi held it in knowing Tony would have definately whacked the rapist.
Posted: 1:54 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
What about the episode where Christopher takes out that old actress to steal her gift bag after the awards show.
Posted: 2:15 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
You guys are missing the best scene of them all, when Christopher shows up at Tony's house and tells him about Adriana's being a rat. And then is heroin bing afterward. Fantastic acting between both of them. I always wanted to know what happened there and when that scene started to unfold I sat there stunned. Best episode ever.
Posted: 2:20 PM, April 06, 2007   by Kwam
How about when Meadow's boyfriend shows up early for work at the construction site and sees Vito in a "compromising" position. Shocking and great foreshadowing for lasat season.
Posted: 2:27 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
The Best-Ever line delivered on the show was by Uncle Junior:

"The Feds are so far up my a$$ I can taste the Brylcreme"

Nothing will ever top that one!

the christopher intervention. nuff said

After Janice shoots Richie and Tony gets rid of the body, she asks what they did with him, Tony says " we burried him under a tree on a little hill overlooking the river" and she says really??? And Tony says whadda you think!
Posted: 2:35 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Season two when Tony meets with Bobby, who was quite heavy at the time, and says "I think it's time for your to start seriously considering salads"
When Christopher sit on Ade's dog and then says that the dog must have crawled under him to get warm.
Posted: 2:57 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Greatest Sopranos Moment Ever - The executive card game when David Scatino loses all the money and then Tony tries to give Meadow his son's and her friend's car.
Posted: 3:20 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
I always felt bad for Ralphie's stripper girfriend. The one he beat to death in the parking lot.

Don't forget Christopher's business associate who calls for his mom just before getting whacked.

Also whoever mentioned Burt Young killing those 2 guys in the house was right on.
Posted: 3:38 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
My favorite moment was when Mickey (Junior's assistant) gets it!! Everybody hated that guy and loved it when he got whacked!!
Posted: 3:42 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Tony sitting in the car and smiling while Furio went on a rampage with the deadbeat whorehouse owners who were stiffing Christopha was a great one. Furio put a bullet in the husband's knee and then punched out the wife who had been resisting payment. Then he faked like he was going to hit her again, she fell into a pile quivering and he laughed at her.

Another great moment was when the guy who ripped off Artie with an investment scam and then pulled out his earring opened his apartment door and looked at the new bill collector, Furio.

Nobody has mentioned Tony taking out his cousin Tony with a rifle before calling Johnny Sack with his cousin's location.

I agree on Edie Falco's performance when she threw Tony out. Absolutely shattering, as great an acting performance as I've ever seen in anything.

As far as great lines, Richie Aprile's line to Uncle Junior in a t-shirt was a classic: "Look at you, you're giving me a chubby."

And I agree with the others, virtually every scene with Christopha and Paulie was a classic.
Posted: 3:42 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
I forgot about this one, thanks. This was hilarious.

"After Janice shoots Richie and Tony gets rid of the body, she asks what they did with him, Tony says " we burried him under a tree on a little hill overlooking the river" and she says really??? And Tony says whadda you think!"
Posted: 4:14 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Great list.

The end of Season 1, when Tony goes to confront Livia after surviving the assasination (sp) attempt. As Tony is restrained, his mother smiles at him as she is wheeled away. That dynamic is what gave the show its original power, and no other story line has come close to matching it yet.

Also, any scene with Paulie. I think last season was his best work yet, with his mother and his cancer scare.
Posted: 4:14 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
My favorite Sopranos moment was in season 1, right before Tony's guys went after Junior's crew in payback for the attempted hit on Tony.

Tony strolls into the kitchen in his robe with a chipper "Good morning, everybody." His family looks up, puzzled at his cheeriness, and when Carmela says, "Well, aren't you in a good mood?", Tony opens the refrigerator door, throws some food in his mouth, and has a wide-grinned, abbreviated chuckle because he knows what's about to go down that morning. You can't help but feel the same satisfaction Tony does.
Posted: 4:21 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
how about when the brothel owner shorts tony his money and then tony sends in furio to collect, while he stays in the car smoking a cigar. awesome beatdown on the owner and his wife!
Posted: 4:33 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Another classic moment: When Paulie, Christopher, and Tony go to Italy, Paulie needs to use the restroom while dining with the crew and the Italian connections. Paulie can't find a restroom which meets his meticulous standards and departs the crew by saying "Hey Ton, I gotta take a wicked S***."
Posted: 4:39 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
the best episode is when they chase that russian guy in the forest and they end up in that truck over night and they freeze their toes. that was hilarious when they thought he was some kind of super russian army man.
Posted: 4:52 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
A classic scene is when Uncle Junior has Mikey whack the guy that was trying to set up the hit on Tony. The way they drove by slowly and the look on Junior's face (with those huge glasses) was classic.

The funniest/grossest scene was when the Feds had Adrianna at the office and they are trying to scare her, and she barfs all over them. Classico!!
How about the beginning of the first episode. A scene that must have been planned to suck you in and keep you there. When Tony and Christopher track down a deadbeat at his office, Christopher jumps out of the car to chase him down and Tony jumps in the drivers' seat and runs him down instead, then breaks his leg. The episode later went on to portray the first of many "Godfather" imitations, showing the lighter side of the group....and how the show portrayed itself.
Moving forward to season 3, just after Livia dies and Tony, Janice and Barb go to the funeral home. The undertaker tells Tony "I will use all of my powers and my skills..." only to be cut off by Tony saying, "let's not go overboard here". I always love the Godfather references.
Posted: 5:04 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Johnny Cakes!

Absolutely priceless.
Posted: 5:28 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
This show is so well written that everyone has at least one great line even those who you don't expect it from. Chris is great with the "It happens" line when he shot the bakery guy in the foot ala Spider (Goodfellas), Carmela when Uncle Junior come backs from Florida and Tony asks him, How was Boca? Junior: I don't go down often enough. Carmella: That's not what I heard. The look on Uncle June's face made me crack up. Paulie however is my all time favorite, his lines and his delivery are gold.
Uncle Junior has some great lines too
Posted: 5:49 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
All of these are great. I'm reading each one while nodding.

How about the last scene of the episode when Artie gets stiffed by the shifty French guy and they just show Furio knocking on his door. Perfect.
Second last episode of season 1 where Tony is spiraling into depression until he gets carjacked and becomes his old self. Or as he says to Melfi when asked how he's doing "Pretty f***in good".
I cant believe no one mentioned the episode when Ralph Ciffaretto (Joey Pants)called Paulie Walnuts' mom at the nursing home as a prank saying he was a cop and that Paulie was caught doing something homosexual. Paulies moms reaction was the greatest, it was so funny!
Posted: 7:39 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
I can't call these "most memorable" moments. But they do stick with me.

I love the scene in the pilot in the church with Tony and Meadow. Meadow is consumed with her mother's objection to her going on some trip. Tony is explaining how her great-grandfather Frank and Frank's brother built the church. Tony is enjoying the simple pleasure of connecting to his family history. It is a great scene between a father and a teenage daughter. So much is communicated wordlessly. No music and only minimal dialog was needed.

Later Tony takes AJ to the same area where they are offered drugs. AJ says, "So that's a crack ho!"

In addition, no one has mentioned when the crew calls on Silvio to do his impersonations from The Godfather. "Just when I thought I was out - they pull me back in!"
Posted: 8:07 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
How about Tony and his mistress..."What are you reading?" "Chicken Soup for the Soul." And Tony responds..."Read tomato sauce for your ass, it's the Italian version."
I love the one where Pauley and Pussy go to the cafe to look for a guy who works there and Pauley gets ticked because Americans are ripping off the Italianos by selling pizza and calzones and "expresso". Very funny - Pauley at his best.
Posted: 9:29 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
... don't forget this line from Uncle Jun when he was being followed by the Feds -- still makes me laugh ..."I've got the Feds so far up my a&%, I can taste Brylcreem".
Posted: 9:42 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
remember when uncle jr thought that larry david was him on tv?
Posted: 9:52 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
Best scene is when Ben Kingsley sees Christafa on the plane in Cali
Posted: 10:12 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anita K
More classic moments:

Tony is driving his SUV and "Oh Girl" by the Chi-Lites come on the radio, and Tony is getting all misty and teary-eyed over his ex-Russian girlfriend who is now carrying on with Assemblyman Zelman.

The episode where Tony suffers from food poisoning and makes those terrific sound effects in the bathroom and his family is getting all grossed out...
Posted: 10:59 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
All these are great. My add - Chrissie ripping off Lauren Bacall's award show SWAG and punching her in the face. I had to immediately re-watch it three times!
Posted: 11:19 PM, April 06, 2007   by Anonymous
My favorite scene is when Tony beats the crap out of Eddie Haskell for being such a smart alleck. Great TV !
Posted: 2:42 AM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
How about the scene when Paulie visits Christopher in the hospital after he got shot, and tries to find out if he realy went to hell...he asked..."was it hot?" Because that something no body has ever disputed..if it wasn't hot then you went to purgatory...
Posted: 3:41 AM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
what about the poker game when tony asks the kid to sweep under silvio#s chair and silvio goes off: ...cheese, i love cheese....!
When Melfi is talking to Tony about getting a prostate exam and Tony says, "I won't even let a guy wag his finger in my face," and then they both crack up.
Posted: 3:54 AM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
tony and bobby b. are having dinner and bobby gets all confused with notre dame and nostradamus!
Season 5 had some great moments, a number of which make my top 10.

1. The Test Dream - Tony brings in the asian hooker at the Plaza Hotel, then has the dream w/ him in the car and everyone else in it is dead - Gloria Trillo, Ralph, somebody else and Artie! Why Artie!?!? - weird. Then eats w/ Finns parents, but instead they are Vic and Annete Bening. and walks outside as Tony B. kills someone and everyone watches. Also coach tells Tony he was never fit to be a Varsity athlete, tony's gun fails to fire. Eeriest episode of television ever.

2. Silvio gives Adriana the Long term goodbye

3. Tony almost kills Christopher after Christopha thinks Tony's been u-know-whating Adriana.

4. Just as J. Sack and tony resolve differences, Feds bust Johnny and Tony runs into the snow-covered woods, as 5th and arguably most exciting season ends.

5. Tony kills Tony B in Upstate NY. Crazy stuff w/ him and johnny Sack and phil

Other non-season 5:
1. Burying Ralphie's body
2. 'College' Great Episode
3. Pine Barrens
4. Pussy's death/ talking fish
5. when the black guy shoots Tony but manages not to kill him / 1st season
6. Mikey Palmice being shot in da woods

also nothing from season 6 was memorable, just a waste of time. Vito was only memorable cuz it was so darn disgusting
Posted: 9:57 AM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
There are too many great lines in this amazing series, but I have always thought one of the best was when Paulie and Chris were in the woods looking for the Russian, Paulie gets off the phone with Tony, looks at Chris and says..."You ain't gonna believe this, that guy's an interior decorator" ...to which Chris replies..."His place looked like sh*t."......CLASSIC!
Posted: 1:26 PM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
Can't help remembering the very first episode: Tony wants to dissuade Uncle Junior from whacking someone inside Vesuvio, the restaurant owned by Tony's high school friend, Artie Bucco (who is not in The Family). Tony pleads with Junior to do the job somewhere else. But Junior won't budge. So in order to prevent Artie's business from being hurt by bad buzz from a mob hit, Tony has Vesuvio burned to the ground by arsonists! This perfectly called up the Vietnam "logic" of "we had to destroy the village in order to save it." That was when I knew this show was going to be something special.

I have always thought the Emmies should create special awards for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, and just leave the regular awards to the mere mortals.

And speaking of Uncle Junior's great lines, my personal favorite:

FBI Agent: "We want you to testify against Tony Soprano."

Junior: "Yeah? Well, I want to f**k Angie Dickinson. Let's see who gets lucky first."

Priceless.

aj refuses to say the blessing before a meal. meadow explains "he thinks god is dead". tony replies "i dont care if he IS dead, youre still gonna kiss his ass"
One episode that made my top 10 was when Tony played golf with his neighbor and the other 'country clubbers' who drilled him with nosy questions. Tony tells them how he used to get to "ring the bell" as a boy while riding on the ice-cream truck.
Posted: 5:09 PM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
When Tony questions Christopher on whether or not the middle eastern men he is dealing weapons and credit cards to are terrorists and Christopher goes " I dont think so....they have a dog"
Posted: 8:14 PM, April 07, 2007   by Anonymous
Teh greatest moment was when Tony adn Carmela fought and had one of the msot emotional, heated arguments ever seen on film. Amazing acting, riveting, emotional. I think that scene cinched a lifetime emmy for Edie Falco

You got us off to a good start, Jimmy. But who will ever forget the episode where Christopher, looking for some way to explain away his prolonged absence, uttered those immortal words: "Highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power drive."

Melfi criticizes Tony, saying you can't threaten people with violence, and he replies with all seriousness, "Then how do you get them to do things?"

To me, the "University" episode, which culminated in Ralphie beating his pregnant stripper girlfriend to death in the back parking lot of the Bing, summed up the Mafia morality (or lack thereof) perfectly, when what enraged Tony and the others wasn't so much the fact that Ralphie had killed a woman as that he "disrespected the Bing" by doing it there.

For me and my wife it had to be the episode which featured Christoper's intervention. That scene was so over the top.

I would have to say there are 2 crucial Sopranos moments that made for interesting tv to say the least. The first would be the odd twist that had Tony killing his cousin Tony so that the New York family couldn't. You expected Tony to continue his soft streak and find a way to let him go free. Insteas he shocked a lot of folks by shooting him on the porch of the family farm.

The other would be win Fin caught Vito in the act at the contruction site. It was another shock TV moment that no one (I mean no one) saw coming. It brought a more human side to that family and it was something that you waited and waited for it to be brought up again. When it was, it wasn't handled well, but it made for an interesting side story.

For me, the best moment was actually at the very end of season 2, after they've killed Big Pussy. It's the sequence with the Stones' "Thru and Thru" in the background, and they just pan through all the characters, in a very earnest way. And then it ends with a shot of waves crashing on the Jersey shore, reminding you again who was just buried out there. Not a major plot-turner or a zinger as far as the dialogue, but it really showed how effecting the show can be.

Listening to Little Carmine try to say any word longer than 2 syllables is always entertaining
How about the episode when Tony's staying in New York and has one of his infamous dreams, in which all of his problems come to the surface. Even some of his older dreams are cycled back through (Pussy as a fish). His dream from this season as Kevin Finnerty was absolute gold as well, Tony in another life and the acting by Gandolfini is done to perfection.

So many awseome comments and recollections here, its almost pointless for me to try to nail down one or two moments. but:

chistopher doped out and sitting on Adriana's dog, then getting a real "family intervention" after he called his mom a whooah...

paulie killing to the old woman to make his nut with tony. you cant coach that...

ANY scene with Miss Meadow...

the unbelievable photography from the Naples University episode. i swore i thought i was sitting outside that villa, feeling the sea air...

everybody bonging up before Livia's funeral, then chrissy going off an a weed-rap about aliens or whatever the hell he was on about...

Jackie Jr getting whacked. what a gabrone that guy was. Definitely not O.C. material...

Massive Genius, and the way he pointed the gun at Christopher w/o Chris batting an eyelash...

Tony getting his Perestroika on with Svetlana..."a 1-legged one now."

Paulie's flair for language. I use the phrase "pishadool" every day.

I could go on and on, but its 5 minutes before premier time.

Nicely done.

One scene that always summed up Tony was the one where he beats the Assemblyman with a belt...classic Tony reaction to a situation.
The episode that stands out for me was when Burt Young (Uncle Pauly from Rocky)came back to try and get a pass from Tony for a distant relative who beat ]the pulp out of "a friend of theirs" . Tony denies the pass and and lets the old man take care of him on his own. He ends up murdering the guy, and the guys friend, then while fleeing the scene still covered in the dead mans blood, he has a heart attack and crashes the car and dies!

Meadow sitting on AJ's bed. AJ lifts his legs and farts and says "Meeting over". Nuff said

I laugh alot during The Sapranos, but I still laugh at the scene, were Tony comes out of his coma, is restimg at the hospital, and reading a book about dinosaures, and the bible thumper tells him the book hes reading is blasphmy, and that man walked eith the dinosaures, Tony reponds " What like in the Flintstones"

"No Pulp? I like SOME Pulp!"

Tony then takes a half gallon of OJ to the head.

Not one of the best episodes, but a line that I loved. When Tony and Carmela were seperated, arguing in the kitchen over money issues and AJ's tutor, Carmela asks Tony, "What, are you afraid he's gonna soak you for an extra pencil." to which Tony replies with body language, "Heyyoo, rimshot" I always crack up with that one.

One of my favorite moments was last season when Tony and Christopher pull over to go to the bathroom and they steal the wine from the vipers. It's hilarious to see them try to be sneaky and then when they make fun of the gang members later on at dinner is very funny. One of the only bright spots from last season,

The best line ever on TV;
Dr. Malfi to Tony: Have you had a full physical exan with a prostate exam?
Tony: I don't even let a guy wave a finger in my face
Posted: 6:18 PM, April 09, 2007   by Anonymous
My favorite line. Junior says, " The feds are so far up my ass I can taste Brylcreme. "

Can't believe nobody mentioned the scenes in Carm's kitchen with her, Ro and Meadow talking about Vito. The look on Ro's face when Meadow spills the beans about Finn seeing Vito in the parking lot was priceless!

Sil to Christopher: "Who do we blame for the hat?"

How about when Junior went missing looking for his brother Johnny. First he shows up at some youth center where kids are getting ready to sell candy and gets thrown out. Then he wanders around thinking someone stole his car. He meets up with the black woman who offers him some "half & half" in the backseat to which he responds, "did you and me have relations?". Finally when the cops spot him walking around and he tries to hide behind a dumpster.

The Russian in the snow episode was good, but it was overrated since it was a down season. A couple of unforgettable moments you left out were:
1) A.J. - What? No f-ing ziti.
2) Tony and Christopher go to collect from a guy at his work. While Chris is trying to run him down, Tony drives his Lexus onto the grass and runs into him. I think it was the first episode ever.
3) Sil - "Every time I try to get out, they pull me back in".

I laughed out loud as silvio and carlo, after they had killed the NY crew guy who was making fun of Vito, just sat there eating pasta, played cards, and listening to Mike and the Mad Dog on WFAN radio. The corpse lies there on the table right next to them and they go on as if it's just another day. Heartless and comical all at the same time.

I loved the scene where Janice had a moment of realization after being forced to go to Anger Management classes after flipping out at the soccer game ... she makes a nice dinner for Bobby and the kids and is actually acting reasonably for once, and Tony undermines and destroys the whole thing. It's a reminder that even the characters you want to be able to like are horrible people. You actually feel bad for Janice.

Oh and when Christopher referred to Law and Order as, "Law and Order, the SUV" was hilarious.

I agree about the scene in which Furio goes into the massage parlor to collect. Casual, emotionless brutality that sums up the atmosphere of violence. Also, a great scene where we see big, friendly Bobby intimidating the union guy. Patsy threatening Gloria was also top notch.

Some great recollections. Paulie Walnuts replacing his shoelaces when he realizes they are untied after he's been in a restroom. Tony's flashbacks of scenes with his father. Uncle Junior's trip to the old haunts in Newark.

Didn't Tony call one of the guys (really big guy) a 'calzone with legs'? I laughed for 10 minutes on that one...

Your #1 was right on the money! When I saw the title of hte article, I said to myself "Oh, #1, chasing the Russian through the woods." Great minds think alike.

One of my personal favorites is when Uncle June is starting to forget things and it's the sunday dinner and Junior keeps telling Tony he never had the makings of a varsity athlete and eventually Tony loses his patience and storms away with A.J. from the dinner table.

how can you leave out when tony has a hit out on him yet he manages to evade his pursuers, this is the peak of the first season!!!!!

also when they kill mikey should have been there

janice is a horrible character, i cant believe you listed her twice :(

My favorite episode is the botched hit on Tony, the hit set up by Uncle Junior and his own mother.

Also, when Paulie goes to the psychic and begins to see all the people he's killed.

Don't forget the episode where Ralphie makes the inappropriate jokes about Ginny Sack ("her blood type's Ragu!"). Especially priceless was the facial reactions of Tony and then Carmine when Johnny Sack explains it to them (i.e. they both are clearly trying hard not to laugh).

What about Chris taking acting lessons? Performing a role play exercise on non-verbal communication - and beating the s*** out of his partner (after his partner speaks nonsensically) and storms off...

Now THAT was non-verbal communication at it's finest.

Chris and Paulie are amazing...
Silvio, in his typical deadpan style, during Christufuh's intervention:

"One morning, I came in to open up the Bing, and there you were, with your head inside the toilet. Your hair was in the toilet water. Disgusting."
one of THEE funniest moments in sopranos for me was when Tony, AJ and carmella visit Meadow at her new york apartment to have dinner with her and her roomates and the whole gay book discussion comes up....
AJ: "I didn't even know they had fags back then"
Tony to roomate: "No Offence"
Roomate: "oh im not gay"
Tony: "really?"

HAHAHA I laughed so hard
