Diamonds in the NBA Rough
Whether Toronto decides to take Italian superstar Andrea Bargnani, Texas big man LaMarcus Aldridge or Gonazaga's Adam Morrison with the first pick in the NBA Draft, it's safe to say that whoever is selected will have a positive impact on the Raptors next season. The same, however, can't be said for second-round selections, who more often than not end up in the NBDL, Europe or buried at the end of an NBA team's bench. A quick look at last year’s second round shows some successes (Ryan Gomes, Ronny Turiaf), but mostly failures (Von Wafer, Travis Diener). However, for an NBA team to be successful, it helps to have one diamond in the rough, as evidenced by the teams still in the playoffs: Phoenix (Leandro Barbosa, No. 28 pick in '03), Dallas (Marquis Daniels, undrafted), Miami (Udonis Haslem, undrafted) and Detroit (Ben Wallace, undrafted). Today we want to know which players who are likely to be taken deep in next month’s draft will be diamonds in the rough. SI.com posted its first mock draft yesterday, and of the second round choices, we think Eric Hicks and Denham Brown will be instant contributors to an NBA squad. What under the radar players do you like? Comments:I think JP Batista of Gonzaga will have an impact on the right team. Good low block body with a high field goal pct. He will be a good pick up.
I agree with your pick about Dehnam Brown. He's an amazing scorer and likes to take the ball to the hoop. Plus hes got the size and jump shot to play as a 2 guard in the nba.
I think that Denham Brown is a good pick. He is aggressive and can easily take the ball to the hoop. He's also got the size and jump shot to be a back-up two guard in the nba.
Dee Brown will get no love in the draft and provide a lot of energy coming off the bench next year.
As much as I hate to say it as a Duke fan, I think David Noel will have an impact either as a second rounder or as an undrafted free agent. He's got the physical gifts to really be good at the next level.
Thomas Gardner out of Missouri is a major sleeper pcik, he has excellent shooting abilities, he needs better coaching..but he has so much more potential
I agree with the Dee Brown comment. I also think that Leon Powe from Cal will be a solid player right away.
David Noel of UNC is a true diamond in the rough. His strength quickness and versitlity will be a great asset to the team that drafts him. He is not a glamour player, but he will do whatever he needs to get a win. He is also one heck of a dunker.
Allen Ray of Villanova is a high quality second round pick. He proved in college that he can fill it up and he is a good defender. I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a decent NBA career.
I still believe LaMarcus Aldridge should go #1. put on 30 lbs on him, and you have the makings of a sweet frontcourt for the next 10 years. Don't forget they have villanueva, and some allstar named chris bosh. adding aldridge, and try to move up in the second and get a good 2 guard, and the raptors will be on their way, you are looking at potentially phoenix of the east
I might be a little bias because I used to watch Denham play back in high school in Canada against my Dad and godfathers teams. Just like many of players from the Toronto area, I have followed his game since day one at UCONN. This said I would have to agree that he will be a steal for some team in the 2nd round. He's played for one of the top programs in the country and with all those great recruits coming in, he still held his starting spot for the majority of his career. He's also proven himself in pressure games (ex. Maui tourny game winner over Morrison, last second lay-up to send George Mason game into OT) His biggest knock was that he scored 111pts in high school.. because really how can you one up that in the higher levels?
Pops Mensa-Bonsu is big, athletic, and blocks shots. On the right team he could get 8 points, 4 rebounds, and a blocked shot a game.
i think james augustine he is a great rebouder and will do good in the nba
i think if the 76ers could pick up a big man with some strenght an a little bit of weight to him like Sheldon Williams than they could be a contender like when they had Dikembe Mutombo
I think Allan Ray will have a major impact on the pro level. He has that killer instinct that I feel you need to have for the NBA and he doesn't get rattled or taken off of his game. Great off of the dribble and popping a 3.
JP Batista is a good pick for a second rounder but so is Leon Powe out of CAL.
how is dee friggin brown not a first rounder. he was amazing in college, 2nd team all american and 6th most votes for all merican team. he should be at least a top 20 pick.
This class is weak! Mardy Collins has lasting power, though will never be an all-star. Steve Novak will be a second rounder who collect a paycheck for 4 years. Dee Brown better get his pasport ready. Kyle Lowry needs to find a shot between now and Chicago. If Maxiel can't make an impact, neither will Hicks...Countdown until the 2007 draft!
How about This kid named Robert Reining from OU he is about 5 11, 55 percent body fat, deceptively slow and shoots a very high percentage on his layups but i think hes got a great shot and being picked up as a free agent and really being a positive to some lucky organization
Steve Novak is by far the best shooter in this draft and the last time i checked, every team needs a great shooter. only problem is is that he plays almost no D- but who does???
Nik Caner Medley. His athleticism is better than most think, but this kid has heart and will. Put those two together, and that he can shoot the rock, good ballhandler, and can play a few different positions, he will be a valuable asset to some nba's teams bench.
David Noel, UNC'06 has the athleticism and jumper to pull it off. He's smart, physical and plays "d" like he likes it.
Julian Sensley out of Hawaii will be a sleeper in this year's draft. At 6'9", he's got the athleticism & game to do well sf/pf in the NBA.
Augustine from Illinois reminds me of Bill Lambier. he'll get the touches he needs at Portsmouth and Boston and possibly play his way into a late 1st round selection.
Denham will have an impact in the league and if Colangelo is smart which he definetely is he should use that 5th pick in the 2nd round on him local boy with a chance to be an ok player in the league and if he doesn't pan out no one will hate because at least the raps will have a canadian on the team.
Bobby Jones from the University of Washington will be a solid NBA player. He's a lock down defender, huge energy guy, improving offensively, was the best player at the Portsmouth pre-draft camp, and in the tourney he shut down Dee Brown and James Augustine in the same game! He's gonna surprise a lot of people.
I believe tha JP Batista will be a great addition to any team that chooses him. He showed his soft touch and made Killingsworth look silly in the tournament.
I think Ryan Hollins can become an immediate contributor in the NBA beacause he is long and a high energy guy. He would be a good fit for a team looking for depth at center or power forward.
vince grier from minnesota. left hander
P.J. Tucker is a Charles Barkley in the making. Tough guy who knows how to rebound, hustle and is fundementally sound. Will need time to develop outside shot.
I think Taquan Dean from Louisville should get a look in the second round the guy can simply fill it up, but don't have the ball handling skills to play the point but hey he can stroke it.
do we forget dee brown isnt even 6 feet? and james augustine is mainly just a rebounder how could you possibly put him in the same sentence as bill lambier...are you crazy? thats like comparing kobe bryant to the likes of jj redick....ridiculous.....my sleeper pick and my "diamond in the rough" would be marco killingsworth? everyone forgets how good he was in the low post and how powerful he can be, if he were taller he would dominate but he can be a great pick up for someone needing offensive balance with defensive intimidation
Paul Millsap of LA Tech will have a long, productive career in the NBA. The guy is a rebounding machine and will be a perfect role player for the right club.
man guillermo diaz in the second round. Say What!!!!
this puertorican plays like a smaller Dwayne Wade with a better jump shot this guy will be an allstar and represent the Puertorican national team, the best team ever assembled and also Jose Juan Barea is a great pointguard that because he dind't play good teams during college might not get drafted, this guy is like Steve Nash, you should see him play in PR, he dominates the league Justin Williams is a shotblocking maniac. Out of Wyoming, just like the previous shotblocking king, Theo Ratliff, he put up huge numbers blocks wise. 6' 10" and skinny, he could be a Keon Clark without the disapearances from the face of the earth.
David Noel. He is a natural leader, and is willing to fit any role on a team. He's strong, can jump out of the gym, and has found his shot.
Steve Novak. His pure consistancy from the line and crazy, clutch 3s guarantee his success. And while his D did used to be horrible, it was better this year. A few practices of getting knocked on his ass will do him some good. He's a natural. He made 100 some free throws in a row over 2 seasons. That alone would get him a contract.
Don't forget about Mike Gansey from West Virginia. One of the top three point shooters in the nation, Gansey is an ultra-efficient scorer and does all of the little things his team needs. He is a mature player and should be able to make immediate contributions.
Definitely Leon Powe from Cal. Although he lacks height, he has the strength to get some points and boards in the low block. He'll be a good pick up.
PJ Tucker will likely go undrafted, and in my opinion he should have come back for his senior year, but he could be a solid contributor on the right team. He always plays hard, has a knack for the ball and has nice touch around the basket. He has the tools to be a good defender. He could develop into a Bruce Bowen type player on defense, locking down the opposing team's best perimeter player, and crash the boards on offense. He'll never be a star on offense but he's great at getting the garbage buckets.

Bobby Brown from Fullerton. Pape Sow was a project, Brown is a Finley type off the bench. Could be 6th man of the year in his 2nd season... hes that good
Steve Novak shoots the three at a higher percentage than Redick, he would be a great addition to any team, imagine him in Phoenix!!
I didn't see Mardy Collins play this past year, but the year before he looked like the most NBA-ready guard around. Good size, with a smart, controlled game....unless he went backward he should be a steal for someone.
Dee Brown will be a solid player in the league for 10+ years. Super quick, a leader, and a good shot. David Noel will help some team early with his athleticism, toughness, and ability to defend multiple positions.
From Left Field, I think Gerry McNamara will do well in the NBA. He reminds me of Steve Kerr. He will add to any team.
My vote goes to Allen Ray. Based on the mock draft listed, if he goes to Utah, I think he can have an immediate impact. He has the ability to strech defenses with his shooting and drive to the lane to get easy buckets and get to the line. On top of that he is a solid wing defender, who can come in a shut down a teams second option on the wing. We have already seen what can be done with a long wingspan on the perimeter, alla T-Prince.
Ronnie Brewer. Plays defense, can guard 1-3, handles the ball, drives to the paint, high energy.
Guillermo Diaz of the University of Miami. He's versatile, athletic and can score from anywhere...just ask Duke and UNC how lightly they took UM.
Allen Ray going to Utah gives a dynamic player the chance to play right away. He has the talent and seasoning to play serious minute and possibly average double figure as a rookie. Also, Steve Novak going to the Pacers gives them another deep shooter to compliment Peja and his height will make it very easy for him to make the entry pass to Jermaine O'Neal. He is a good talent and a great fit.
i'm a little bias cause im from iowa but greg brunner would be a great undrafted free agent, he reminds me of reggie evans who also played for Iowa
David Noel without question. He will go mid 2nd round, and will come up big however he is needed. He is a great role player, and has shown incredible development over the past season. For a guy who chose to walk-on for UNC instead of taking his pick from a laundry list of D1 football powerhouses, he has exceptional athletic ability, and a sure top 5 finisher in next year's dunk contest.
Dehnam Brown for sure I hope my Raptors draft him, he could be their back-up 2 gaurd right away and would be great in the community.
I agree with Left Field McNamara will flourish as a 3 point specialist ala the Paxsons
James White. His game is more suited to the NBA than it was to college. He can run, he's a great passer, his shot has gotten a lot better, and he's a great man-to-man defender with his long arms. It remains to be seen if he can put on weight. Plus he'll have some of the best dunks the NBA has ever seen!
Pops Mensah Bonsu from George Washington is a borderline first rounder, but because of being limited by little injuries during the season, will probably slip to the mid to late second round. He's an amazing athlete in the low post and will provide pop to a team in need of athleticism where he can regularly get some minutes off the bench.
To the anonymous killingsworth fan. Just some stats that might shed some light: He shot 68.7 % for his carrer excellent speed and can step out to hit a nice 20 footer. Granted Killingsworth could be a good player/bruiser but he never did shoot well out of the lane. I personally am a fan of Allen Ray he has the driving ability and athleticism to contribute to any team.
Bad news for Raptor Fans. Denham will go in the first round late. I would trade up and get him if I were them. Local talent is what Toronto needs. Dont believe this second round talk with him, Steve Nash backs him as a GREAT scorer and a first round guy. He was the scdon best player overall on the Canada Nt team and on some night the best player.
The selection of a UConn player was correct but you guys have the worng Uconn player. With the growing importance of the 3-point shot and his ability to knock down big shots in the clutch Rashard "The Dagger" Anderson will be the 2nd round steal of the draft. Rashard not the handful of Uconn players listed in the mock draft was the player Calhoun wanted to have the ball.
simononsports.blogspot.com If the raps can pick up Dee Brown you will see a reincarnation of Phoenix in Toronto. Collangelo likes the PG that can run and is quick like Brown...Brown's quickness will loosen defenses for Bosh, Charlie V, and whomever they draft #1 to flourish in the East
im saying craig smith from Boston College Allen Ray Ronnie Brewer and Dee Brown will all be good role players in the NBA with the exception off Dee Brown who if he goes to the right team will average in Double Digits
Craig Smith, Allen Ray, Ronnnie Brewer and Dee Brown are all very smart picks in the 2nd round all will be good role players exceot for Dee Brown who will eventually turn out to be a player that works off the ball to get his points like Leandro Barbosa
If he somehow makes it to the second round, Rajon Rondo would be an excellent pick up. He is a fast, true point guard who is as long as anyone in the league. He is a terrific defender and just needs to develop a consistent jumper to be a truly great player.
Daniel Horton will be a good addition to an NBA roster. Scoring PG that can shoot and has a soft touch around the basket.
The NBA is all about where you fit. With vast array of styles out there who picks you up is as important as anything. A rookie, especially one with a low draft status and not much cap space devoted to him is going to have the right situation to excell. Keeping this in mind look at the rosters and the needs each team needs. Diaz and White would fit right into what the Timberwolves have to do to become more athletic and should receive plenty of time to show their wares. Rondo to the Hawks is another perfect fit. He wouldn't need to score just run the show, he didn't have anyone to create for at Kentucky his final year. Gansey to Orlando would also be a nice pick as he could stretch the defense and have Howard erase any defensive problems he might have. Some other picks do not seem well suited to the individuals. Davis to the Clippers means limited minutes and touches in the low block even though his offensive game may be better suited to the spacing and low block isolation of the NBA than it was for college. Killingsworth to the Cavs, although I would like to see LeBron get all the help he can doesn't seem like a good fit. He seems to be one that would need room at the low block to work. Lack of perimeter shooting and LeBron's need for room to penetrate and pick n rolls means a bad fit.
I think James Augustine of Illinois. His scoring average was not spectacular, but that was because of lack of touches. He is a good rebounder, tough down low, shot over 60% for his career at Illinois.
PJ Tucker, Milsap and McNamera are the types of guys all teams need but figure they can scrape up later. A team like MN with multiple 2nd round picks would do well to scoop these three up.

kevin pitsnogle is a big man that can strecth the defense, can pass, and is a decent rebounder. Can you say Brad Miller with range Dehnam Brown is certainly going to be a steal for any team who snags him in the 2d rd. His UConn teammate, Hilton Armstrong could also be a gem in the 2nd rd. He was the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, he's improved a great deal over the four yrs., he has a mid-range jump shot, he can accept being a role player, and he his big and strong enough for the NBA.
I'm an ACC guy, so i gotta go with Nik Caner-Medley, and Craig Smith; Craig Smith's ridiculous strength and hustle will make up for lack of size, a la Ryan Gomes; Caner Medley is a guy who, when he's on, could go for 25 in a game...he's also got great size.
I think that curtis stinson of iowa state will be a major player in the nba if h slips into the second round
The right fit means everything to a player. Look at the playoffs this year and the guys that at their previous stops didn't scratch the surface of what they are accomplishing now. Take some of the roles players that are contributing now in the playoffs and put them on another team and they would flounder simply because they would not fit. With that in mind and viewing how the picks fit into the roster space and needs of each team I think the picks of Diaz and White to the Timberwolves would fit perfectly with their need to become more athletic. They would surely see an opportunity to shine. The pick of Davis to the Clippers although I feel his low post game is better suited to the spacing and low post isolation of the NBA do not feel he would garner the minutes or low post touches need for a big man to succeed in LA. Rondo to the Hawks seems to be a good fit as well. Remember he is a point guard first and as much as it pains me to say this he didn't have anyone to create for in Kentucky this year. With his defensive prowess and ability to create opportunities for others off the break, he should lead all rookies in steals and assists. Gansey to Orlando looks like he could open things up for Howard, at the same time Howard would have his back on the defensive end. Pittsnogle and Killingsworth both have games that I think could flourish at the NBA level but do not see the picks working out for them. Pittsnogle needs to be somewhere that he can work the pick and pop, I just do not see that being the case in Utah along with the limited minutes he would get along that frontline. Killingsworth is a beast but needs touches along the low block with space in order to work. The lack of perimeter threats currently with the Cavs and LeBron's need for an active post to work the pick and roll with seem doomed to fail. Some players though should be successful where ever they fall. I think the new NBA rules allow for a Dee Brown to excel whoever is lucky enough to get him. With so many small shooting guards in the league he should find plenty of match ups to suit him, if the pick is Orlando he will again benefit from the shotblocking of Howard behind him. I like Novak's ability to knock down the open 3's but see him as another Austin Croshere type with limited minutes early on. Along with tremendous athleticism or shooting another thing that gets these late round or undrafted guys an opportunity is being a defense/rebounding specialist. Even though there are a few of these available in the draft (Craig Smith, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, etc) they don't seem to have a good shot with the frontcourt depth or styles in which they are being chosen. Would love to see Ray excel with the Jazz after the injury he suffered in the tourney and to come back with a vengence he's got the grit need now all he needs is the right fit. Here's hoping all these guys find the right place for them.
I think that Rashad Anderson of Uconn could have an immediate impact as a perimeter marksman off the bench. After all, he led the nation in points off the bench in college last year.
JP BATISTA OF GONZAGA SHOULD FIT RIGHT IN SOFT HANDS, BIG BODY IN THE LOW BLOCKS, WOULD LOOK GREAT IN A CELTIC UNIFORM
ODOG OHMANN I have to go with Denham Brown over Rashard Anderson. Both players are good, but Brown is more versatile.
Obviously both can shoot the ball, but Brown also goes to the rim and finishes strong. Anderson rarely takes the ball into traffic. Brown is also a better defender, and doesn't have the injury concerns that have plagued Anderson. Obviously the best 2nd rounder that could contribute quick would be T.J. Tucker from Texas. He may not have size, but he has more heart and hustle than 90% of NBA players today.
I agree that David Noel from UNC could make a very interesting pick. Anyone who watched him over the last couple of years saw how much he improved in terms of passing, shooting, and overall basketball IQ/knowledge (keep in mind the guy originally went to Carolina to play football). By the end of this season, he was all over the passing lanes, and making big plays on the offensive side of the ball.
If things go the right way, I could see Noel as the poor man's Ron Artest. He's 6'6", built like a Mac truck, fast as hell, has major ups, and he's a great defender - so he could be a great defensive secret weapon off the bench for a team trying to slow down a Kobe, LeBron, Areanas, or Wade type player. Moreover, if a transition-oriented team like the Suns picked him up, he'd fill the lanes nicely and hit open threes. And unlike the real Artest, Noel's unanimously considered a good guy, and will definitely show up for every game. In the second round you are looking at guys that fit well in your team's system....that being said, big guys who can shoot the three like Pittsnoggle and Novak will have the chance to be effective in the NBA.....also one from way out in left field, how about Keydren Clark, the guy was only like the 6th highest score in NCAA history....he needs to be on an uptempo team like Phoenix or Washington though.
One thing to keep in mind is when they have the pre-draft measurements and we find out some of these guys listed at 6'7 turn out to be 6'5. What if Reddick is 6'2"?
Some of you guys make good suggestions, some of you don't seem to understand what a big difference it is between between the NBA and college. Noel of Carolina is a serial turnover guy and a poor foul shooter. In the NBA any point guard has to make his foul shots, so the PG from Kentucky getting hyped as a first rounder will be a bench sitting dud if he doesn't start making foul shots. On the other hand, he seems to be a great rebounder for a guard. Novak from Marquette is like Danny Ferry at the end of his career, stands around the 3 point line. He's a great foul shooter but only gets two shots a game, so why bother? Batista of Gonzaga showed excellent quickness off the floor for a big guy. Very good foul shooter. He's my pick. Powe of Cal if he can stay healthy will contribute as he really gets to the foul line. Millsap of La. Tech I have never seen play, but his stats look good. Forget Ray, he won't be a star. Brown shot below 40% this year. No way he makes it if he can't shoot. Steve Novak without question. The guy was one of the best free throw shooters and one of the best, if not the best, 3 point shooter. Also he knows how to get into the right spot at the right time.
I think that Bobby Jones of the U of Washington will be the next Bruce Bowen. He will have the biggest impact of all the second round and undrafted player in 5 years.
Sean Dockery was amazing at the Portmouth games. At Duke he wasn't called on to do much, but I think he hasn't reached his pinnacle yet, plus, we know he will settle for a supporting role. He could make early impact on the bench.
Ronnie Brewer is a son of a former NBA player. Very smart b-ball IQ. Gets others involved. Plays solid defense with very long arms. Ugly shot, but it's the end result that counts. Arkansas coach wasn't worth a hoot, but he improved every year. I saw this kid as a 7 year old and he was schooling junior high kids. No joke! His dad started working with him at a young age. Definite diamond in the rough.
Nobdy has mentioned anything about Rudy Fernandez of the Euro Leagues, he will be one of the best in the draft. He is a Ginobli with better shooting, his defense isn't as good as his though. I have seen this guy play before. Mark my words, in a couple of years he will be shining as a diamond in the rough.
We all saw killingsworth make sheldon williams (former defensive player of the year) look like a chump early in the season.
I like Hicks alot, I don't think he will ever be a star on offense but with his body and arm length he could be another Ben Wallace. I really like Noel, White and Dee Brown. As all three of these players can defend. Brown can change a tempo by himself. And White and Noel are about as well rounded as it gets for incoming rookies. Noel reminds me of a Richard Jefferson type player, and White, a more athletic Prince (not the shooter prince is however)
P.J. Tucker is a player who reminds me a lot of Josh Howard, a great athlete who plays solid defense and has great reach. While he still makes mental mistakes and doesn't have a great jump shot, neither did Howard. The main knock on him seems to be he plays to big for a wing.
As a Mavs fan, I hope they don't pass on this guy. He could easily be a great late round steal who has a ready for NBA game right now. With Stack's contract running out, and Marquis Daniels continuing to show he's not ready to start, Tucker would be a great pick. Denham Brown is going to be the steal of the draft, the raptors better pick him. He's a solid defender and great competitor most guys in his position would have complained or transfered but he didn't. He did whatever the coach asked and whatever his team needed. He's a proven winner, the raptors need to start having winners on the team to change this losing attitude around , much like the bulls did. In international play he always dominated. If you look at his career his position was toughest to gain minutes out of any team in college, him and Rashad Anderson are 20 point scorers at any other program, but they were at UCONN battling each other for 4 years. If you look at his points to minutes, which all real GM's should, when he got consistent minutes he produced. With a short tempered hard nose coach like Calhoun skill has nothing to do with minutes because everybody at that program can play, its all about mental toughness, he either breaks you or you become good, no in between. Denham became a solid pro and has earned his spot on the raptors. If they will pick joey graham and he is a bum,he looks like tarzan and plays like jane.Denham Brown is the steal of the draft.
Craig Smith in the second round! No way! He's a first round talent regardless of his size just like barkley was. Maybe not quite that skilled but first round none the less. Guillermo Diaz has a smooth pro game as well. Alot of steals in this draft because we just had a wave of superstars so For teams to develop into championship contenders they'll need solid contributors who understand the game and can coexist with the the current dominant players. Since I ws born in 79 not many teams have won championships and the teams that did win had once in a lifetime players with great role players. This will be a draft of great role players.
Marco Killingsworth killen um in the middle man.
You have the right team in UCONN but the wrong player. Rashard Anderson will fit perfect as an outside scorer in the NBA.
Solomon Jones 6 10 PF South Florida
great defender and rebounder. Decent 18 foot jumper and second in the big east in rebounding. 78% free throw shooter. Rashard Anderson 6 5 SG UConn great arc on shot and clutch performer. Played on a great team for 4 years and decent defender. Tremendous upside both players I'm in love with David Noel. Mike Gansey is pretty fly for a white dude. Rajon Rondo's game is sicknastydumpstafunk. Cedric Simmons is underrated as a futhermocker. Hilton Armstrong will send that shit back from whence it came.
In the right situation Pittsnogle could be a dangerous weapon off the bench. Same could also be said for Gerry McNamerra.
I think J.J. Redick is clearly the #1 pick in this draft, he has the size, length, and quickness to be productive on any NBA roster. The Raptors are going to get an excellent franchise player in Redick.
Mike Gansey could be decent...he kind of reminds me of Manu Ginobli
I think Marco Killingsworth would fit right in on a rugged eastern conference team such as the pacers or pistons. Very good in spurts at Indiana.
What about Curtis Withers? He could have an impact immediately.
Gerry McNamara.....put him on a running team and i think GMAC could have himself a nice little NBA career, ala Steve Kerr!
Dee "friggin" Brown will be a second rounder because he is a 5-9 shooting guard without the athletisism of Nate Robinson or the shot of Caig Hodges. Being a AA in college has little correlation with success in the pros. As to the actual topic, A-Ray and Pops could be solid 2nd rounders.
I think the nerdy kid who applied for the draft is a real sleeper. You know the guy who had an article on your website a few weeks back. Four points in an elementary school game, if thats not raw talent I don't know what is. In fact, being a t-wolves fan, I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin McHale used one of our second rounders on him.
If Brad Newly gets drafted that high in this draft those of you who have said it's weak are spot on!!!
He has an ok shot and is athletic (isnt everyone over there though?) and yes his d is sh1t hot, but a first round draft pick i think not!! If so the NBA teams could draft about 15-20 players from our national league. PS if anyone picks up Chris Anstey as a free agent, nice pick up. Dominated in Australia, Russia and Europe since leaving NBA dead set GUN now!!!! Allan Ray of Villanova - too good of a shooter with great range not to stick somewhere - very long defender at 6'2" with great athleticism and quickness.
James White is a freak athlete - he is another guy I love. I'm glad thatsomeone brought up Bobby Jones from Washington. The guy has been building his draft stock by going to pre-draft camps and doing things like being the MVP and getting and being named first team at another. For all we know this guy may make the first round. I guess only time will tell...
i would select james augistine. he runs the floor well, has a nice mid-range jumper, and will help his team on the boards. This is coupled with his willingness to hustle, a factor that is questionable in some higher-rated players in this draft. As a GM, you get a nice skill-package for a reasonable price.
Mike Gansey will have the biggest impact of a second round pick if he lands with a team that can use him as a spark plug off the bench. Gansey is mature enough to immediately contribute in the NBA with his effort, steals, and shooting.
James Augustine will be a great roleplayer in the NBA. He won't be an all-star but every championship team needs its roleplayers and Augie is just that player. He is a nice sized player who can hit the jumpshot and doesn't have to be in the post to be effective. Look for him to make an impact of whichever team grabs him in the 2nd round.
three words: ryan hollins= JESUS.
The greatest sleeper of all time is no doubt Julian Sensley out of Hawaii. He's good enough where he can start or be a major contributer in the mold of boris diaw and has the size and athletism to stand out. Most likely will be picked up in the late second round or won't be drafted at all. Will make every team wish they picked him.
I'm going to have to say Ryan Hollins. He seems to have really blossomed late last season and athletic 7 footers don't just grow on trees. You could see somewhat of a jumper coming around last year and due to Howland the kid knows how to play defense with a lot of energy. He's a sleeper with the potential to make a huge impact in the upcoming years.
Watch out for Phoenix trying to get Pitsnogle a bigman who can hoist 3's and he will probaly go undrafted.
I also agree with Denham Brown.
I don't think that his talents were properly utilized with UCONN. I think that he could have an Aaron McKie-esque career. I think David Noel could go late first or early second and he will make a early impact on someones team beacause of his athletic ability
Bobby Jones will have a place in the league as a defensive stopper. And if he can ever get a jumpshot he become a valuable role player.
David Noel without a doubt. He continues to grow in leaps and bounds.
I have to go with Novak and Craig Smith of BC as my sleeper steals. If I were a team like the Cavs, who need outside shooting, I'd pick Novak late in the 1st-round. There is no denying his stroke and he'll grab some boards. Smith is an undersized power forward, but is ripped like a line backer. Small PF's seem to be all the rage (look at the conference finals). Smith could be a better Haslem I think.
Taquan Dean for the Ville should be a nice risk/reward pick in the 2nd round. We all know he has a sweet jumper but I think his playmaking and dribbling skills are a little underrated. Hey, if a guy like Damon Jones has enough dribble to occasionally handle the point, Taquan can too.
Steve Novak the best shooter in the draft. You must be a serious Duke hater because noone can say theres a better shooter in this draft than JJ Redick
If being a 6'11" good shooter, who can't a lick of D gets Brian "amnesty clause" Sclabrinie a 3yr./15mil contract. Then why not pick up Pittsnogle for the NBA minimum. Pitts is a better shooter and passer than Scalabrine is anyway.
A guy like Smith from BC would be great for my Wizards. I also like T. Dean from Louisville and Mike Gansey from WVU. Gansey reminds me of a poor mans Ginobli plus he keeps improving every year. hassan "hot sauce" adams will be off da hook
anyone who'll draft gerry mcnamara of syracuse will get the best hidden treasure. although he is hindered by the deep pool of guards in the draft, no one can deny that he still is the PG when syracuse won the championship in 2003 when melo is still around. this guy has the toughness and athleticism coupled with tons of experience from 4 years of college peppering.
Whoever drafts JP Batista is going to get a rock inside, a big guy who can get rebounds, score with a high %, and make free throws (listening Detroit?) and be a positive energy for the team. I hope the Sonics get him in the 2nd. Worst mock draft EVER by the way, morrison 8th, and redick 10th, the last thing the Sonics need is another "scorer" after they just had the worst defense in the history of the NBA.
Not sure if Rajon Rando will actually make it to the second round, but if he does he could be a very nice player for a number of teams.
Assuming that he's a first-rounder, two likely second round sleepers are Kevin Pittsnoggle and Guillermo Diaz. Pittsnoggle, if placed in the right system, could pose as a match up nightmare for opposing ball clubs. He'd be a great pick for a team like the Phoenix suns. He's a more talented Brian Cardinal or Matt Bonner. Diaz is a flashy guard with great offensive ability. Every now and then those kinds of guys surprise (Gilbert Arenas). He could be a solid offensive contributer off the bench, a la Antonio Daniels or Lenardo Barbosa. Although he is listed as a lottery pick, I think Quincy Douby is a name that many casual basketball fans haven't heard. Douby and JJ Redick are the best shooters in this year's draft. He can literally hit any shot from 35 feet and in, and I've seen him do it numerous times at the RAC. Plus, his defense is better than people will give him credit for. Whatever team ends up with him will be stretching opposing defenses well beyond the 3-point line.
JP Batista is a SOLID player. He is strong, can rebound with the best of them, and has a great touch on the offensive end. If he doesn't get drafted in the high to mid second round, heads will roll, because he will be a great value pick.
Steve Novak without a doubt. Any time there exists such a solid, pure shooter like him there will be a long and productive career (and he's a better shooter than Redick because 1. he's 6'10 and can shoot over most players and 2. doesn't go into funks like J.J.)
Leon Powe is just a beast and will be a great pickup for someone. Also wouldnt be surprised to see Gerry McNamara stick around with someone--No special talent, just a gamer.
I have to say the "Sleepers" are Craig Smith from Boston College he's another Udonis Haslem with better range also Will Blalock from Iowa State he's one of the MOST athletic point guards in the whole draft he can handle the ball ball he court vision is crazy once he gets his jumper down pact its a wrap he's another Devin Harris but more athletic.
Sheldon Williams is going to be a beast at the power forward position on both sides of the ball. James White is the most versatile player in the draft and can play about 3 positions because of his athleticism. Last but not least JJ All Day Redick is going to prove alot of people wrong people need to stop hating on him.
Bobby Jones of Washington might not be drafted at all, but if he is, his contributions will be immediate and substantial. He's a glue-type player who could be a great addition for a team on the verge of a late-playoff run. He was one of the best defenders in college basketball last season, he is an above-average outside shooter and he is a way better athlete than most people living outside the Pacific Northwest give him credit for. Plus, he rebounds with ferocity and gets on the floor all the time. He'll make a difference on an NBA team next year — if he gets the chance.
does anyone think that a good jump shooting big man such as Davis who will probably land in the second round would be a good fit?
Denham Brown would be a smart pick for a team needing a good defender and a capable scorer. He has international experience playing for the Canadian National team. Go Denham Go. Brandon Bowman from my beloved Hoyas needs some love.
Quincy Douby may or may not be a second round pick, but even if he is a late first rounder, he will be a steal.
Denham Brown is a steal in the srcond round, and Lamarcus aldridge number 1, lol, I dont think so toronto should take the italian stalion, I wish high schoolers were still able to enter the draft then the raps would have greg oden and it would be dont, but w/e. another steal is yeun sun from china, hes gonna be a sick player and hes just so versatile. Also justin williams is a ben wallace player, averaging close to 6 blocks and 11 boards a game. Its time for the raps to make their pick and pick andrea
Haven't seen any mention yet of Aussie Brad Newley. An athletic 2-3 who shoots from range and can create his own shot. Weaknesses are passing, strength (more accuratley weight) and on-ball D (all are much improved though). Worth a first-round pick (in a couple Mock-drafts has been projected this high), esp. for a team wanting to play a faster style game (Phoenix....). He has desire & work ethic to be a very good 10-year NBA player, and a the much used "high ceiling".
I second Rashad Anderson -- NBA teams can always use a three-point specialist, and he's as good as any I've seen coming out of college.
I think Rajon Rondo could be a good steal early on in the second round, he is young, high energy, and amazing athletisism. I say he is a great steal in the second round.
I think Dee Brown will be solid in the NBA, he plays like Iverson and is about the same height
Vincent Grier could be a really good defender and garbage type scorer if he puts his mind to it. Super long and a legitimate 6'5''.
THABO SEFOLOSHA : he is the sleeper in this draft. Long arms like Tayshaun Prince, good defender, amazing ballhandling, very athletic.
And by the way he is playing for Biella in Italy (and not anymore Chalon in France, as written in the CNNSI mock draft) ! With your Mock Draft, I see Rondo, Steve Smith, Kevin Pittsnogle, and Allan Ray as all good second round picks. Likewise, many first round picks do not get to start, let alone second round picks. I know many second round picks get cut, but you can't judge the second rounders from the 2005 draft and call them bad or failures or the like. Using your precious Haslem as an example - he pined in the CBA and ABA for a while. Ben Wallace was a bench player for the Magic for a few years. In three years, tell me how the second rounders did. Let's look at the 2003 secound rounders and we can then say who won...
Mike Gansey is the next Jeff Hornacek.
Aaron Afflalo can shoot the 3, handle the ball, and is an excellent defender.
One name that you guys have left out is Alex Loughton from Old Dominion. This guy is 6-10 and has low post moves Shaq would die for, and he can shoot the mid range jumper with ease. This guy would be a good fit in Washington. The Wizards need someone that can be a inside force, and who can score coming off the bench. However, let me warn you now, he will not ride the bench for long.
Justin Williams will be a great second round pick. He plays great defense and can run the floor. He will be a huge contributor to whatever team picks him
There is a kid out there named Derek Burditt. He is a 6'6 swingman with good handles and a smooth jumper. If he gets a chance I can see him being a Marquise Daniels type of player.
Greg Brunner out of Iowa is seriously underated....dont be surprised if he leads the league in rebounding and double doubles next year.
The guy's name is Rashad Anderson..not Rashard. But your all right he will be a good contributor and a good steal. So will Denham Brown. Hilton Armstong will be gone by the 15th pick. Gay by at least 6th spot, and Josh Boone late 1st to early second round. Thats my Uconn roundup.
Any team that is in need of a solid big man coming off the bench should seriously consider going after Michigan State's Paul Davis; his nice stroke and strong rebounding should warrant some significant minutes at the next level. He can basically be viewed as a more athletic version of Michael Doleac, which would not be a bad option to have at the end of a team's bench.
Pittsnogle could be so effective in the NBA. Not nearly as dependable as Nowitzki, but he is still tall, agile enough, and has that decent shot from anywhere inside of 25 ft.
josh boone well be a steal i would like to see him in the green jerseys but they have no second round pick. However he is the best foward available in the second round he played against okafor, gay, armstrong, villanueva in practice and held his own.... nuff said david noel sucks novak sucks killingsworth sucks....
DARIUS WASHINGTON JR. from Memphis is lights out. The sleeper of the draft or a diamond in the rough,
my sleepers are; jordan farmar (the game will open up to his skills at the next level), ronnie brewer (defensive force at 6'7 with a huge wingspan), solomon jones from southern florida (6'10 can run the floor and block shots. averaged 3 per game, tied with tyrus thomas and just behind patrick o'bryant), and leon powe--strongest kid int this draft. i watched cal play a lot and he was triple teamed almost all the time. he's a beast.
Two players, who if put in the right situation will highly impact whichever team is lucky enough to take them. First, Eric Hicks, power forward from UC, is an absolute monster. I've seen him play on two sprained ankles agaisnt guys who have 7 inches and 40 or 50 pounds on him. He will rebound wherever he is, no question, he will block shots wherever he is, and his offense is getting better. Imagine in the playoff grind putting the 6-5/6-6 Hicks in at small forward and just having him abuse the opposing teams 3's. The other player is Marco Killingsworth. Altough he doesn't play much D, isn't that smart, and is only like 6-7/6-8, dude can put the ball in the basket. He would be a great bench player when you needed a quick Iso bucket, I see him playing like The Big Nasty, Corliss Williamson.
Rudy Gay should be a top 2 pick with no question. The Raptors should get the best talent, athleticism, and the greatest potential they can get; which is what Rudy Gay is.
Denham Brown is more than likely the best player in the second round. One, he will become a good player like all other UConn players, two, he has great size for his position and a great shot to go along with that. He is an all around talent.
don't sleep on allen ray... the guy can flat out play.....has some AI(iverson) in him........
One word.....Bobby Jones
First of all, I am a big Duke fan. Everyone knows JJ Redick, but no one likes him or gives him any credit for what he achieved. Redick will not be the same player he was in college, but he will really help a team like the Jazz or a team with a good big man. Redick shooting threes will open the inside up. I believe that JJ will make an NBA team very happy.
Curtis Stinson of Iowa State is way underrated. He'll make some lucky team very happy. He's got a winners attitude and a great drive!
People please take a look at Maurice Ager and Shannon Brown, both recently gave huge impressions on NBA teams at their private workouts. Brown was recently listed as a lottery pick... He has the best jumping ability of anyone in college, as he was rated best leaper by ESPN. These players will be awesome in the pros becuase they can play offense and excell on defense unlike most other guards in the draft. Izzo makes players for the pros and these two will be great pro players. Do not forget about Paul Davis, the white Rasheed Wallace!
SOLOMON JONES- South Florida... This kid is for real, legit 6'10" can run, block shots, brings energy. dont be surprised if he becomes one of the best 2nd rounders of all time.
David Noel. He's a George Lynch all over again. Not a star but a role player who will be a great 7th or 8th man in the L.
While we're at it, somebody find a home for Jawad Williams ... speaking of which, where is Ed Cota? Bobby Jones. I doubt he actually gets drafted, which is a shame, but he'll pick up somewhere. I think he's a Bruce Bowen meets Shawn Marion type player, but probabaly without the big-time scoring of Marion. But he really, really defends, and I think his overall numbers would have been much better had he not been on the same court as Brandon Roy. He'll be an impact player though, for certain
I see Denham Brown contributing immediately off the bench of someone's team. He can score down low or hit the NBA 3 pt. Plus he's become a good lock down defender and he's got good size to play the 2 or 3 if a team plays small.
i think i should be in the first round.. ppl knock on my height but i feel i am a first rounder by far...
Akin Akingbala of Clemson could be a diamond in the rough. He improved dramatically over the second half of the season in a very tough conference. He has a lot of upside.
Terrell Everett is the biggest diamond in the rough. "6.4, long arms and left handed. Can play the point for stretches, but also has the ability to be an effective slasher an finisher around the rim. With his court vision and passing ability he can also penetrate and kick at the two spot. If given the opportunity Rell will make it in the NBA.
P.S. (Anthony Johnson is the only other Charleston, S.C. product in the league and Rell is better than her was at this stage in his career!!!) I can not believe some of the people that SI has in there draft in the second round. Yet they didn't add BIG J.P. Batista of Gonzaga. The man can flat out play around the basket. If you look at his year he took on some of the best big men in the country(Michigan State, U Conn, Indiana) just to name a few top basketball programs he played against and BIG J.P. Batista flat out dominated their big men in the paint on both sides of the floor. Yet SI as well as several other draft makers didn't even pick him. Soft hands, can shoot with his back to the basket, sets incredible screens to free up people. Adam Morrision would not of had the season he did without Batista. He will fit in well in many teams. Just needs a shot.
Remember the name SEAN DOCKERY, was not really given the chance to display all his talent since coach K fell in love with Paulus. This kid has the heart of a lion and great defensive skills. And on the offensive this kid can deliver when needed.
J.J Redick needs to go to a team that has an inside game and a star player like. So, houston, miami, san antonio are the best fit for the type of game jj has.In this type of environment jj will flourish as a player.
