In your view, which fresh faces will threaten the upperclassmen this fall?
Chris Leak has been under fire since the first time he set foot in The Swamp. First, he got "zooked", now he is expected to run a system that I don't think is ever going to work in the SEC.
It's really too bad that the potential to be a legendary SEC quarterback and possibly the greatest in Gator history has been wasted during the debacle that has been his time at Florida. Yeah, his numbers will look great, but the coaching of that team has prevented the team from having a legitimate shot at SEC and national titles.
I'd love to put Chris Leak or GT quarterback Reggie Ball on this list, but the reality is that both of them are seniors and wont lose their job before graduation.
The guy I'd put #1 on this list is Miami QB Kyle Wright. Last year he proved to be incapable af beating a good defense. He got slaughtered by Florida State, Georgia Tech and Louisiana State.
Number 2 on my list would Brian Brohm, who interestingly enough is also my preseason Heisman pick. If Louisville, with that offense gets behind in the Big East conference standings, Brohm may get behind on the depth chart.
"...legendary SEC quarterback and possibly the greatest in Gator history..."
Uhhhh, maybe that's a little overstated for a 5'11" 200 lb QB who can't run, playing against SEC defenses.
If Brodie Croyle, Jay Cutler or Jamarcus Russell had Leak's WR roster to throw to, either would have put up enormous numbers last (this) year.
Hot seat? Try Casey Dick, who played well last year, having to ward off Mitch Mustain simply because Jethro Nutt (on the hot seat himself) will be pressured into starting the latter.
I think whoever ends up starting QB at Texas. I mean the second either Colt McCoy or Jevan Snead do bad, the other will be there to replace him.
Also did Richard actually call LSU "Louisiana State," that may be the first time I've seen that.
No way Leak is under fire from a Freshman who's never taken a snap. Everyone needs to get off his back. He will deliver this year.
Richard are you saying Virginia Tech isn't a good defense? Because Kyle Wright went into Blacksburg and the Canes won 27-7. Also I don't think you can put the FSU loss on Wright. The guy was sacked 9 times and it could have been more. He also led a last minute drive that got his team in position to take the game to OT but the field goal was botched. Wright is not on the hot seat, he is poised for a monster season.
"If Brodie Croyle, Jay Cutler or Jamarcus Russell had Leak's WR roster to throw to, either would have put up enormous numbers last (this) year."
You have got to be kidding me. Put either of those QB's into the "Trial by Fire" that Leak has had to endure while at Florida and I am sure you will recant your statement. Leak had to go through 3 different offenses in 3 years. You could have put Ty Detmer (greatest prolific passer TD stats wise in NCAA history), Peyton Manning or even Matt Leinart in his shoes and you would be saying the same about them not living up to the "hype".
Jay Cutler is an AVERAGE QB at best (but plays with a lot of heart), Jamarcus Russell had the athletes at WR, and we won't even get into Brodie Croyle.
Bottom line, Leak is an excellent QB, who unfortunately, due to the systems he was in, won't live up to the billing he had coming out of high school.
And for the record, you don't have to be a running QB to be considered "good" in the SEC. Last time I checked, Danny Wuerffel, Tim Couch, Peyton Manning nor his younger brother Eli were "light on their feet", yet look at the college resumés they compiled. Look at Jared Lorenzen, a 300 lb QUARTERBACK who still put up 10,000 yards against SEC competition. Do your homework "gigged".
Sergio Kindle has the talent to step in as a freshman and get some early playing time at Texas as a OLB.
It's unfortunent that Leak never had a chance to showcase his talent. Florida's coaching has been in turmoil since he arrived. Now he is in a spread option offense that needs a running quarterback to succeed and he is a protoype pocket passer. I think he is on the hot seat since Tebow fits Meyers' offense perfectly.
Fine, so Wright showed signs of improvement. I think you all are forgetting that anyone not winning a national championship in Miami is automatically on the hot seat.
Texas is in huge trouble. one of there greatest Qb's ever is now in tennesse (Vince Young) and now they have Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead are both freshman who have never taken a snap in collge football. Plus they have too produce after Texas lost the person who guided them to the win over USC (Vince Young). If they don't win then the fans will be breathing down there necks.
And oh yeah not to mention they have to they have too face OU and Adrian Peterson.
Having Chris Leak on this list is ridiculous. If the Gators had an offensive line that didn't block like the Texans then he'd be doing a lot more. It's hard to throw the ball and lead the team when you're running for your life every other snap. Put Tebow in and he'll be a little bit better, but only cause he's a better runner. He'll make more mistakes though. Leak's job is safe and Tebow will ride the pine while he gets used to a college system. Also, it wouldn't hurt if the Gators had a true RB instead of a bunch of guys who barely get the job done. That'd take a lot of heat off of Leak.
If we are talking players under fire then lets look at an entire program under fire: Michigan. If Loyd Carr doesnt get his act together he will be coaching else where next season and Chad Henne and Mike Hart had less then stellar seaons last year. I dont think either of them will be replaced but then again when you go 7-5 the year before and the coach is worried about his job, crazy things can happen
Any gator fan who thinks Leak should be unseated as the starter is a backwoods, uneducated, social deviant who doesn't know football from his beer soaked recliner.
"Put either of those QB's into the "Trial by Fire" that Leak has had to endure while at Florida and I am sure you will recant your statement. Leak had to go through 3 different offenses in 3 years."
Ummmm, didn't Brodie Croyle have to suffer through three separate coaches and two major injuries, as well as deal with a roster decimated by scholarship probabtion and the intense scrutiny that came with the Price scandal? This has to be a "Trial By Fire" comparable to Chris Leak's at the very least. And anyway, when your Number 1 option is Chad Jackson - a second rounder that some thought was the best receiver available in the draft - how bad can your situation really be? Working hypothetically, if you gave Croyle or Cutler a "Chad Jackson" esque receiver, they would have looked considerably better. For the record, I don't think Tebow stands a chance in hell of taking the spot away from Leak, because as has been pointed out he's a talented, experienced QB who has weathered significant crises... I just don't think those crises are so great as to warrant a dismissal of these other QBS.
Chris Leak is the man at UF and will start every game possible unless a meltdown takes place(which isn't going to happen). Sure Tim Tebow is going to get a fair share of snaps throughout the season (more than Josh Portis did in his freshman year) but the fact remains that this is Leak's team and Tebow will have to wait his turn until next year.
As far as this offense not working in the SEC I find this to be a complete load of BS. Just ask Georgia if the spread option will work (in case you forgot West Virginia ran up and down the field in UGA in the Sugar Bowl last year using essentially the same offense as Meyer's spread option at Utah). However, I believe that Meyer will have to hold the reigns back on his offense because Leak's style of play doesn't fit well with that system. With that said, being a Gator fan, I believe that this could be a really good team that will make strides from where they were offensively a year ago. The biggest thing hurting the Gators is the schedule. They have the hardest schedule in the SEC this year in having to play Bama, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn and South Carolina. They could easily have a better team than last year while finishing with the same record as last year. I would consider it a GREAT year if we make it to Atlanta and the SEC championship game.
