The Best Game I Ever Saw

Oakland Arena
The "Bush Push" highlighted the best game we ever saw. What is yours?
For the past week, SI.com writers have been going down memory lane and recounting the best game they ever saw. Their selections have covered a wide variety of events -- from the Islanders beating the Rangers in the '84 Stanley Cup to the Red Sox finally winning the World Series in '04 to the Ben Johnson-Carl Lewis 100-meter duel at the 1988 Olympics. At SIOC, the best game we ever saw happened two years ago in South Bend, when an upstart Notre Dame team seemingly had No. 1 USC on the ropes, leading by three with seven seconds left when Matt Leinart fumbled the ball out of bounds. The clock on the field kept running and as time expired and Fighting Irish fans rushed the field to celebrate the upset. Only the game wasn't over, the operator of the clock forgot to stop the clock when the ball went out of bounds and there was still time for one final play. You know what happened next: Leinart successfully snuck into the endzone -- with an assist from Reggie Bush – giving USC a 34-31 victory. The Bush Push, as the play is called now, will forever be etched in my sports memory.

Today, we want to know what the best college game you ever saw was. Could it be Christian Laetner's last second shot to defeat Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA East Regional, the famous "band on the field" play from the 1982 Cal-Stanford matchup or Doug Flutie's hail mary against Miami in 1984. Or maybe you witnessed the greatest NCAA field hockey game that has ever been played. Whatever your memory is, we want to hear it. Tell us about the best college game you ever saw.

The Boise State / Oklahoma game was a far better game.

ND/USC as the best college game ever? Pass the ND Kool-aide please. Seriously, this is even beyond the usual ND garbage we have to read/hear/watch.

1995 UVA vs. FSU: UVA holds Warrick Dunn to the one inch line to give FSU their first ACC loss.

I was at the 2006 Orange bowl to watch PSU beat FSU in triple over time. A great end to a magical season.

Michigan vs. Michigan State in 2004. Michigan overcame a 24 point hole and forced overtime, where they beat state 44-38 in Triple Overtime. That was the best game I've ever seen.

2002 Fiesta Bowl

The "steal" by Mo Clarett, Craig Krenzel completes 5 passes and is the game's leading rusher. The drama of the McGahee injury.

Close runner up
Michigan Northwestern 55-48 game. Don't remember the details but every time I looked up somebody else scored.

The best game ever has to be USC/Texas in the Rose Bowl. For what was at stake and the performances in that game we incredible. And I am a SC fan.

Kentucky vs. Michigan State - 2005 NCAA Basketball Tournament South Regional in Austin, TX. The Cats and Spartans battled for 40 minutes only to have the game sent into overtime as Patrick Sparks' three pointer bounced on the rim twice as the buzzer sounded before finally dropping. Two overtimes later Michigan State punched its ticket to the final four in St. Louis.

1996 LSU v. Miami CWS Championship game: Bottom of the 9th with 2 outs down by a run with one last chance. LSU's Warren Morris swings at the first pitch and hits his first home run of the season - a walk-off for the National Title.

Umass upsetting defending national champ Uconn 61-59 on a last second layup , Decemeber 9, 2004. I was a Umass student and at the game.It was a phenomenal experience, I'll never forget it.

How about the 1992 NCAA tournament game between Duke and Kentucky. Grant Hill's 3/4 court pass to Lattner and the spin to hit the shot at the buzzered! That is one of the best games in all of college sports.

Although I'm a USC fan, I still have to admit the Texas-USC Rose Bowl game was the best game I have seen in person. However, in terms of best game I have seen either on tv or in person, I would have to go with the Boise State-Oklahoma game this year. I'm only 17, but I would say that the past two years have given us college football fans 3 unforgettable games: Texas-USC, Boise State-Oklahoma, and USC-Notre Dame. A strong case could also be made for last years Rutgers-Louisville game too.

1969 Texas Arkansas, "The Big Shootout". James Street, a wishbone QB hits a late bomb to Randy Peschel to set up the winning TD.

Sept 2003 - #3 Michigan getting undressed at the #22 Oregon Ducks. Michigan's Chris Perry (Heisman candidate) held to 26 yards. Lloyd Carr with a dumbfounded look on his face the whole game. Standing and screaming the entire game. Took all week to get my voice back.

The 1977 Alabama vs USC game. Alabama DE Wayne Hamilton sacks Trojan QB Rob Hertel on a 2 point conversion attempt late in the 4th quarter to preserve the Tide's 21-20 upset of the #1 ranked Trojans in LA

1) 1980 Lake Placid. US v. USSR. Cold War. Greatest mismatch I ever saw.

2) 2002 OSU-Miami. OSU wins with duct tape and bubble gum - again. Double OT. MNC game. Big mismatch. Epic.

3) TX-USC Rose Bowl. Decided by two 4th & short plays. SC missed, TX made it. MNC game. Epic.

4) 2007 Colts / Pats AFC Title. Colts man up and beat the Pats after horrible 1st Q. Manning, Dungy and Harrison win the backyard brawl before the SB. Brady can't make up for WR drops and a tired D.

5) Boise St. v. Okla. Cardiac game. Great upset.

In 1999, Virginia Tech is beating WVU by 12 with five minutes to go. Then Marc Bulger's replacement leads the Mountaineers to two touchdowns and a 2-point lead. With time running out, Michael Vick scrambles to the sideline, ready to go out of bounds, the defender lets up, and
Vick turns up the sidelines for about 20 extra yards. Sets up a Shayne Graham field goal as time expires. I was supposed to be there, but my car broke down on the way. Got back to the dorms just in time to watch the game. The dorm hallways went nuts with people running up and down celebrating. Couple that game with the dismantlings of both Syracuse and Miami and the trip to the national title game, that entire season was such a rush.

fsu/miami 2005.... best game i saw in person. FINALLY the critical FG went our way!! best game i've ever seen USC/TX rose bowl NC. phenominal performances by both teams.

Boise State / Oklahoma 2007 Fiesta Bowl was a classic. Best game I've ever seen.
Posted: 3:26 PM   by Anonymous
BYU-Miami, September 1990. Top ranked Miami came to Provo probably overconfident and lost 28-21. The stadium was usually one third empty at the end of most games as people left early to beat traffic, but nobody left that day. I've never seen more joy on the field and in the stands than on that day from BYU players and fans.
Posted: 3:31 PM   by Anonymous
Boise St. / Oklahoma game is easily the best. Watching that game live... with OU coming back, needing 3 tries to tie with the 2 pt conversion, Zebranski seemingly losing the game for Boise with the pick, and then leading the Broncs down the field and converting a fourth and 18 for a touchdown with a hook and ladder, followed by OT watching one of A-Pete's most magnificent runs to give OU the lead again, followed by another fourth down TD conversion for Boise followed by the most famous play of the year and Ian Johnson walking in for the W. Unbelieveable game.
Posted: 3:49 PM   by Anonymous
The Greatest College Game ever was the USC and Texas Rose Bowl. You had two Heisman winners and a modern dynasty taking on the greatest clutch player of this (or any) generation. Starpower on the field and in the stands, and it was the only legitimate BCS title game (where they were lucky enough to land an undisputed #1 and #2 with only two undefeated teams left). That game had it all, controversy, a legendary scoring drive, iconic plays (Bush's fumble, VY's Superman dive), and was on the greatest stage in college football: The Rose Bowl.
Posted: 4:13 PM   by Steve
2002 Ohio State over Miami for the title. The only team in history to win 14 games, capped off by a dramatic 2OT finish. A little bit of everything that is college football happened in that game. Dramatic (but athletic) double turnovers, 4th and 1 long pass plays, controversial calls, outstanding defenses, David vs. Goliath, nasty injuries. It was a heart-stopping chess match. Not to mention, 20+ people on the field that night have since been in the NFL. Best game I've ever seen without question.
Posted: 4:18 PM   by Steve
Anon 3:49 is wrong, by the way. Ohio State-Miami is also an undisputed #1 vs. #2 BCS Championship matchup, where both were the only remaining undefeated teams at the end of the regular season.
Posted: 4:19 PM   by Anonymous
Michigan vs. Michigan State in NOvember 2001. What a finish- came down to a last second TD pass from Smoke to Duckett. Sweetness!
Posted: 4:19 PM   by Anonymous
ND/USC is by far the best game play in the history of Sports. 2 rivals. #1 team in the nation versus #9. winner of this game had a clear road to national championship (both teams won the rest of their regular season games). ND wore the green jerseys. 3 Heisman trophy Finalists on the field. ND answered with an 80 yard TD drive with a Brady Quinn sneak to pull ahead...then the 4th and 10 bomb to Jarrett...greatest game ever coming from an ND fan

As a die hard Longhorn fan i am HAVE to say the Rose Bowl. (USC vs. TEXAS) Everytime I see Vince Young run it for the final TD, I cry inside. Against all odds.

As a College football fan I have to say the Rose Bowl (USC vs. TEXAS) The hype was almost as big as the Delahoya v. Mayweather fight and the game DIDN'T let down. It had the two most explosive offenses and great D's. Hell it was at the "GRANDDADDY OF THEM ALL." Reggie, Matt, Vince, and all the clebs. It was the Greatest game I have ever seen in all sports...
Posted: 4:30 PM   by Anonymous
Colorado's Hail Mary against Michigan in 1994 was a great finish between two conference powers in the Big House. Although the game itself was probably not on the level as the USC/Texas Rose Bowl or last year's Boise State/OU Fiesta Bowl, it was a great non-conference game with loads of soon-to-be NFL players involved, including quarterback Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook for the game-winning touchdown. I still can see the shock on Ty Law's face as the camera panned around Michigan Stadium. Go Buffs!
Posted: 4:42 PM   by Anonymous
NC State v. Maryland in the 1973 ACC Basketball Tournament Championship. Arguably the 2 best teams in the country playing for the single NCAA bid (only the ACC tournament champ got the bid). Double overtime 103-100 win for NCSU, despite incredible shooting and effort by McMillan, Lucas, Elmore at al for the Terps. It was David Thompson and NCSU's year, with Tom Burleson winning the MVP award and State going on to beat UCLA and Marquette for the NCAA title. Before the Laettner shot against Kentucky, generally regarded as the greatest college b-ball game ever.
Posted: 4:56 PM   by Anonymous
The best game I ever saw in person was the Wisconsin/Ohio St. game in 2003. Ohio St. came into the game still unbeaten after their national championship in '02. The Badgers kept it close all game until backup John Stocco hit a streaking Lee Evans to give the Badgers a lead they would not relinquish.
Posted: 5:27 PM   by christopher
The 2002 Fiesta Bowl was probably one of the best games I've ever seen, there was just something about the game, the overtimes, the hype prior to the game. The Boise State/OU game was a extremely close second with USC/TX Rose Bowl isn't much further down the list.
Posted: 5:29 PM   by Greg
What about the 1982 NCAA basketball championship? Back and forth all game until a little known freshman named Michael Jordan hits a jumper to put UNC ahead. With one chance left for Georgetown they mistakenly throw the ball to James Worthy and UNC wins.
Posted: 5:31 PM   by Anonymous
2000 FSU vs Miami....oh my lord it was a back and forth game with great defense and offense, but again the noles lost on a field goal

FSU vs UF in (I think it was '03) hail mary to PK Sam with just a minute to go in the game

1997 World series Marlins win the world seiers in extra innings with a line drive up the middle
Posted: 5:35 PM   by Anonymous
The best game I had seen in person was Miami- UNC October 30th, 2004. Miami came in #3 in the country and vying for national title contention while UNC was an afterthought. UNC played the game of the year, while Miami always stayed within striking distance. There was a constant sinking feeling UNC was going to give up the big play and become dispirited and Miami would roll. That night, however, belonged to the Tar Heels. With Durant and Scott out dueling the vaunted Miami defense, and the UNC defense bending but not breaking, the upset was set up. With a last second field goal by Conor Barth, the flood of powder blue overtook the field and pulled down the goal post.

Without a doubt the greatest game ever was the USC/TX game. One year after Michigan/TX where tickets couldn't be sold for $10 outside the stadium, a ticket couldn't be bought for $4000 cash. 100,000 people in the stadium, 200,000 outside, 2 Thorpe Award Winners, 2 Heisman Trophy winners, the greatest comeback quarterback of all time, a stable of talented personnel, two great win streaks, #1 versus #2, dynasty programs, solid hits, quickness, lead changes, defensive stands, comebacks, over a 1000 yards of offense, and both teams were held below their scoring averages. That game will never be eclipsed, it can only be matched if ever, because it attained the theoretical maximum of everything that is great in sports. Boise State/Oklahoma and Notre Dame/USC don't even come close.
Posted: 6:33 PM   by Anonymous
What about Arkansas' 7 overtime games with ole miss and kentucky and their 6 overtime game with tennessee
Posted: 7:02 PM   by Michael
Best game I ever saw in person was Purdue vs. THE Ohio State University when Drew Brees throws an interception then comes back 3 plays later to hit Seth Moreles on a 74 yard bomb to win and eventually go to the Rose Bowl.
Posted: 7:06 PM   by Anonymous
I am not a Boise State Fan, but that Fiesta Bowl game against Oklahoma was priceless. I could watch that over and over again.

That game was even better than when my Ducks beat Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl a few years earlier, and that is saying something.
Posted: 7:10 PM   by Anonymous
Lat years Oregon/Oklahoma game at Oregon where it came down to the onside kick recovery (or non-recovery, whichever you want to call it) was the most electric game I have ever been to or seen on TV. The refs screwed that up, but it does not take away fromthe excitement of the game and the way the Ducks came back. The refs did not thrown the winning touchdown pass or block the Oklahoma field goal the Ducks did. It was awesome!
Posted: 7:15 PM   by Anonymous
i would have to say texas/michigan in the rosebowl in 2005, and texas/usc in 2006. Another good game i would have to is notre dame and i cant remember who they were playing but rocket ishmal returned the ball with like 8 seconds on the clock to supposedly win the game, but i think the touch down was called back

UCLA vs. Missouri 1995 NCAA Tournament - UCLA down 1 and with 4.7 seconds remaining, Tyus Edney goes the length of the court and makes a game winning layup to win it for the Bruins on the way to a National Title.

Texas vs USC 2005 National Championship

Texas vs Arkansas 1969 National Championship

Michigan vs Ohio State 1968 National Championship

USC vs ND in 2005 doesn't rate.

Auburn vs. Florida 2001... Auburn beats Florida when Florida is ranked #1 in the nation. Then we tore down the goal posts.

I have 2 moments.. What about 1997 Michigan (Charles Woodson) vs Ohio St. (David Boston). I was at that game and it was pandemoneum. And secondly, Michigan vs Colorado; the Kordel Stewart hail mary. Breaks my heart everytime I see it.
Posted: 8:03 PM   by Anonymous
Agreed, SC/Notre Dame best game ever
Posted: 8:30 PM   by Anonymous
The Notre Dame vs. Miami game in 1988 at South Bend. The game was dubbed the "Catholics vs. the Convicts". ND won, 31-30, after knocking down a last second two-point conversion attempt by Miami. It was a rare Miami loss, and helped ND to go on to win the national title.
Three games stick out in my mind - 2 during the same season.

1997- Michigan-Iowa. Michigan comes back from a 10 point deficit to keep their undefeated season going.

1997- Michigan-Ohio State. Both teams in the top 5, Michigan having cost OSU a title shot the previous two years. Best game I've ever attended in person - Woodson seals the Heisman.

2005 Michigan-Penn State. Manningham scores with no time left on the clock.
Posted: 9:51 PM   by Anonymous
Michigan vs. Michigan State, 1990:
Four touchdowns were scored in the last 3 1/2 minutes. The game ended when Desmond Howard (the year before his Heisman run) was interferred with in the end zone while trying for a two point conversion.

The best game I've ever seen was the Illinois vs. Arizona in the 2005 NCAA Basketball tournament. That comeback was amazing.

Michigan over Penn State in the final second in 2005. Locking arms with the thousands of other Michigan fans and praying. Then the moment of silence shock after we realized what happened....
indescribeable.

Iowa State v. Florida State six or seven years ago at Arrowhead Stadium. Iowa State came back in the 2nd half to make it a game and Seneca Wallace scored at the end to win the game but the refs are blind.
Posted: 1:00 AM   by Anonymous
I can admit the '92 UK-Duke game was probably the greatest college basketball game ever. But don't forget about the '98 rematch. UK came back from a 17-point deficit with less that 10 min left. Scott Padgett and Cameron Mills went down as heroes and the Cats went on to win their second national title in 3 years. Also, I know UK's not exactly known as a football powerhouse, but the '02 UK-LSU "Bluegrass Miracle" was amazing. We were on the field when the fireworks went off. Couldn't see the final play through the crowd, but the look on the kids face who was swaying on the goalpost told me everything I needed to know.
Posted: 1:54 AM   by b.keppler
I appreciate last years Fiesta Bowl…that was awesome even tho i hate Boise St. But c'mon! the 02 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in Tempe def. has a fighting chance! double overtime!!! down to the last play!!! there were so many cruitial plays and moments...not just 2 trick plays at the end.
2002 OSU win over Miami for the NC!
Posted: 1:57 AM   by Anonymous
Although possibly not the best game, the best ending was the BYU Utah game last year. No time left and John Beck redeems himself with a touchdown pass across his body while he is being rushed to a wide open Johnny Harline. I still get goose bumps watching that play. The best GAME goes to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl, with 2nd going to Texas over USC in teh Rose Bowl
Posted: 1:58 AM   by Anonymous
Notre Dame-Michigan State 1966. Though ND (i.e., Ara) decided to eschew a field goal attempt at the end and settle for a tie (10-10), the game, taken as a whole, was incredible. Nothing has ever come close since.

94' rangers game 7 win over the canucks
Posted: 10:08 AM   by Anonymous
As a lifetime ND fan I have to say the ND/USC game was the not the greatest of all time it was a classic that will be talked of and replayed for years to come but by no means was it the greatest game. I would have to say the 2002 Fiesta Bowl is up there as was the Boise State/Oklahoma game then how can you forget about this past years game between Texas and Oklahoma State in mens college basketball, that was a classic.
Posted: 10:23 AM   by Anonymous
Without a doubt, USC vs. Texas in the 2005 Natinal Championship. Both teams at the top of their game, Reggie flying through the air, the fourth down stop, Vince coming back from twelve down in the fourth quarter in the final seconds. Apologies to OU and Boise State, but this one had drama and impact on the biggest stage.
Posted: 10:29 AM   by Anonymous
1. USC-Texas NC at the Rose Bowl
2. OSU-Miami NC at the Fiesta Bowl
3. OU-Boise State (cause of the DRAMA)
4. USC-ND 2005
5. OSU-Texas 2005 (VY)

Old School:
BC-Miami
Texas-Arkansas
Cal-Stanford
Nebraska-OU

Boise State/Oklahoma hands down. Who doesnt like seeing trick plays work? Too have the guts to call those plays at the most critical points in the game and also with it being there first BCS bowl in school history. Dont get me wrong those other games were unbelievable. But the only other ones that should compare is the Penn State/FSU game that went 3 OT's and the OSU/Miami 2002 National Championship b/c they were postseason games.
Posted: 11:50 AM   by Anonymous
The 2005 michigan vs. penn st. was pretty good, and so was the texas vs. michigan 05' rose bowl
Posted: 12:01 PM   by Anonymous
i think its a tie with the usc-texas nat'l championship and the boise st-ou game
Posted: 12:02 PM   by Jon Psi
thats embarrassing that you think the USC Notre Dame game was even relatively as good as the Boise State Oklahoma game. This was not only the best game I have ever seen but a shoe in for the top 3 games of all time in any sport. The USC Notre Dame doesn't compare to that game and prob doesn't even make the top ten of all time
Posted: 12:29 PM   by Anonymous
How about the 2007 seven BYU/UTAH game? nothing gets better then that, no time left on the clock John Beck to Jonny Harline for the last second victory for BYU
Posted: 1:45 PM   by Anonymous
Boise State vs. OKLAHOMA. No duubt about that.
Posted: 2:13 PM   by Anonymous
Being a Cal fan, the Boise State-Oklahoma is the best college game I have ever seen, but nothing will beat "The Play" for a last second finish.
Posted: 3:37 PM   by Gandalf
The best college fb game I've seen was the 1969 Orange Bowl game between Kansas and Penn State. In the closing seconds of the game, by a long run down the sidelines, Penn State scores making it 14-13 Kansas. Penn State goes for the 2pt coversion and fails. Kansas fans swarm the field and take down the goal posts. But there is a penalty--Kansas had 12 men on the field. After the field is finally cleared, Penn State tries again and scores, winning 15-14. What a mood swing!
Posted: 4:17 PM   by Andrew
On TV, the Boise State-Oklahoma game. In person, the Florida-South Carolina game from last year, which featured Spurrier's return to the Swamp and the last second field goal block.
Posted: 7:32 PM   by Anonymous
OU and Boise, that game had more plots and twist then a CSI episode.
Posted: 8:22 PM   by gtfan21
Georgia Tech at Clemson 2004. Calvin Johnson catches two touchdowns in the last 5 minutes to win the game.
Posted: 9:51 PM   by Anonymous
Without a doubt, Michigan - Ohio State, 1969. OSU won the National Championship in 1968, had everyone back, was undefeated, and had not even trailed in a game all season. OSU was being compared with the Minnesota Vikings. NO ONE, even in Michigan, thought UM had a chance. Michigan played an inspired game and pulled off an incredible upset.
Posted: 11:12 PM   by Jimbo
Best game, not most dramatic play. As a Buckeye, best game seen live, Oklahoma-Ohio State football when Uwe von Shaumann kicked the Sooners to victory. Hard fought, well played - except for critical off-sides penalty.

Too many good TV games to pick a best.
-Duke-Kentucky 1992 basketball as coach K indicated, the last team to touch the ball won.
-Ohio State-Miami Fiesta Bowl had me pulling the arm off a chair and screaming at the TV after midnight.
-Texas-USC Rose Bowl football. Great teams, great battle tremendous heart exhibited by both teams.
-Oklahoma-Boise State. Enough said already.
Posted: 12:25 AM   by Anonymous
Yes Notre Dame/USC>It was the best game you'd ever want to see. You had to be there to experience it. Boise St. vs. Oklahoma is a close second.
Posted: 8:58 AM   by Anonymous
There's no competition for best college game ever. It was the Boise St. v. Oklahoma Fiesta bowl. I can't imagine seeing anything quite like that ever again. I've never experienced such emotional extremes watching a football game. I'm not even a BSU or OU alum--just a football fan.
Posted: 11:02 AM   by Anonymous
2002 Fiesta Bowl was the best college football game ever.
Posted: 2:26 PM   by Billy
Best game I ever saw was the National Championship game this past year. Florida was the heavy underdog versus the "unbeatable" Ohio State Buckeyes. Nobody was giving the Gators a chance to win. Ohio State fans acted like they already won the championship the days prior to the game. Urban Meyer and his coaching staff developed an amazing game plan for Florida. Chris Leak was flawless and the defense could not have played better. Tedd Ginn Jr's return for a touchdown made it look like the game was going to be the exact opposite, but Florida kept its composure. Makes me so happy just thinking about the game! 41-14! Go Gators!
Posted: 1:54 PM   by Anonymous
Boise State/Oklahoma by far.
Posted: 9:46 PM   by Anonymous
Easily BSU/Oklahoma. The last three Boise State plays were crazy and it had to be put in history as the greatest game of this century, if not ever!
