Who are Your Favorite College Football Announcers
Herbstreit, who had been pulling double duty calling ESPN Thursday night telecasts in addition to his duties on College GameDay, was relieved of his Thursday night responsibilities. The Thursday night broadcast is still sure to remain worth watching, with Erin Andrews working the sidelines and Doug Flutie has replaicing Herbstreit next to Craig James and Chris Fowler in the booth.
Davie, the former Notre Dame coach, was demoted to college football obscurity in the form of the Saturday night ESPN2 broadcasts where Mark Jones is the play-by-play man and Stacey Dales is a third commentator.
Brad Nessler, Bob Griese and Paul Maguire will remain as the team for the top ABC Saturday afternoon broadcast, meaning you’ll likely hear them if you tune in for Michigan games.
College GameDay will remain the same, with Fowler refereeing the action between the combustible duo of Herbstreit and Lee Corso.
Are these changes for the best? Who are your favorite announcers -- not just on ESPN but for all of college football?
Bob Griese is a vain self absorbed prima donna. Lee Corso is a comedian and Kirk Herbstreit is a football announcer
Doug Flutie is the man... GO BC!
I have no problem with Fowler, Herbstriet, or Corso. I used to have Brent Musburger up there until I discovered his man love for the Big Ten...I votmitted when he called the Ohio St-Mich last season. My favorite is Brad Nessler! He's the most underatted anouncer in the game! Every college football game he calls feels like the most important game of the year, regardless of the schools or conference. Even for the NFL he's amazing; I heard him call one of the monday night football double headers last season and he was better than the new ESPN crew they put together with Kornheiser and Namath.
Anything that moves Boob Davie off my screen is good.
Verne Lundquist on CBS covering SEC football is the most entertaining! Watching ABC games with their announcers is boring. Why did they split up Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried on ESPN??? ABC and ESPN needs to take notes from CBS on how to make college games entertaining to the tv viewer!
Kirk Herbstreit can suck it and suck it hard, at times I am completely baffled that anybody ever wanted to give him any job that involved the use of a thought process, from sucking at QB to sucking on my TV every Saturday. ESPN needs to do the world a huge favor and reassign him to year round dog sled racing coverage...
Lee Corso is the worst announcer in college football.
1st off, he knows nothing about the game. He is simply there to add color and play devils advocate.
2nd, being a Penn State Alum, no one in Happy Valley likes Corso b/c of his obvious hate for the Nittany Lions. In 2005 he said Ohio State would beat Penn State, and even wore the Brutus head on gameday. When it came time to interview Michael Robinson after Penn State's 17-10 win, Corso looked like a fool and Herbstreit and Fowler made it obvious on TV that Corso predicted the game to go the other way.
I may be a bit bias, but just listen to the man speak. He really has no clue about what college football has evolved into.
You are right Nessler is the best I also like Ron Franklin, SEC saturday night game on espn
The Musberger/Herbstreit and Davie team had potential to be a great group, although anyone paired with Nessler will be good
Nessler is great. Herbstreit knows his stuff, and is impartial for the most part. Corso is a clown who is entering the "adult diaper wearing" phase of his life. Musburger is another dope who loves cliches. Flutie will do a good job because he knows the game, and his hail mary pass will forever be loved by all college football fans. I just hope Mark May doesn't get any more air time because that guy is the biggest jerk in all of sports.
What about Verne Lundquist? Whenever I come across a game and he is doing it I automatically put down the remote and watch the game regardless of who is playing.
Whatever happened to Ron Franklin? I am a huge Big Ten supporter with SEC ties and listening to Ron Franklin from the plains on a Saturday night was magical. Anyone know where he is?
I echo Brad Nessler! He is so unbiased towards any team or conference and does an outstanding job of really getting into the game and making it exciting to watch.
No mention of Lou Holtz. That is a good thing as he reminds me a lot of Mr. McGoo. Did he have a stroke or does he just drink a fifth of Jack before he goes on the air? Does anyone understand what that guy says?
Herbstreit and Musberger both make me sick. Mark May is probably the worst commentator/ analyst on tv, and not just for college football. I really do hate Mark May.
I agree...Nessler is the best announcer in the college game. ESPN should team Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried back up again; their night games, along with GameDay, made my Saturdays. Bob Davie can just stick to calling Big Ten games, and while Musberger is goofy, what he says is at least enjoyable to listen to (with the drinking game and all). Anything with Erin Andrews is good for me, too. Pam Ward=no. I miss Trev Alberts, too.
Keith Jackson. I know he's retired now, but it doesn't get much better than him.
i miss saturday nights with ron franklin and mike gottfried.
Mark May is a tubby, whiny beyatch. They should take him, Mr. McGoo (Holtz) and the rest of you domer homers and put you on ESPN Ocho!!!!
I miss some Ron Franklin. That deep booming voice announcing the late ESPN game was unbelievable.
gameday crew is awesome. nessler and musburger are top notch.
Please stop paying Bob Davie
I feel Mike Patrick is the best overall voice college football and maybe even college basketball too. His knowledge is vast but not cocky and overpowering. I enjoy any event that he's involved with.
what the hell happened to Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried? They were the best!
Mark May = Satan (a very biased and ND hating Satan)
how about some love for Sean McDonough? the guy was fantastic for years with the Red Sox and has to be one of the most versitile and entertaining broadcasters out there. Not only does he call an excellent football game his in game banter with whomever he is working makes a boring game interesting and livens up the broadcast both. This despite the fact that his pairing of broadcast partners has been anything but consistent over the years. (that and he can call a college baseball game, basketball or the winter olympics for you in a pinch)
Herbstreit has quickly turned into one of the top analysts in cfb. I agree that Brad Nessler is underrated. And I echo the sentiment that Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried should be reunited on Saturday Nights. Listening to them would be like coming home again.......so, let's take a break....
Being a PENN STATE ALUM and CURRENT GRAD STUDENT, I would say that CRAIG JAMES would NOT be anywhere near the best college football announcer. Announcer should not be biased, and with his comments at times he has made it perfectly clear that he HATES PSU!! Last year, Fall 2006, he even went as far as making fun of JOEPA, and that is just UNACCEPTABLE!!!! CRAIG JAMES is not only the worst college football announcer, but he should be FIRED!!!!!!
I agree with all the praise for Brad Nessler. He does a great job calling EA Sports video game and him and Bob Griese make a good crew for Saturday afternoons.
It's a shame that ESPN has relegated Mike Gottfried to the jayvee team aka ESPNU. He gets made fun of sometimes for sounding like he just came from the bar, but he has a voice that just feels like college football.
Gary Danielson, now in his 2nd year with CBS, is a guy who doesn't get talked about a lot, but he does a heckuva job. I do like Brent Musberger, but he was better when he was paired with Danielson for all those years.
For my money it doesn't get any better than Herbstreit.
Paul Maguire IS by far THE WORST analyst that there is. I just dont understand why he didnt get demoted... or fired. Bob Griese cant obviously stand him and neither can I. It is unfortunate that he is on the same team as the best play by play guy of college football, Brad Nessler. I really enjoyed the duo of Herbstreit and Flower in the booth. They have a natural chemistry. But if you want a analyst who tell it like it is, Gary Danielson of CBS is the choice.
I have the H.O.T.S. for Mike Gottfried. Is that bad?
i like brad nessler but, i hope espn realize that mark may is WRONG EVERY YEAR! Anybody but him is ok.
I like Bob Davie. I think he always does a nice job. Mike Gotfreid and Ron Franklin are outstanding! I wish they would just stop making so many changes. Lee Corso is done, he should be replaced by Bob Davie. Would somebody get rid of Beno Cook on ESPN? He is awful......
Herbstreit is a joke nowadays...an extreme Big 11 homer. The ole' Saturday Night SEC team of Godfried and Franklin was the best, for my money. Nessler is the best announcer that ESPN has. I think we all know how "Mushmouth" Musberger is....the worst in the business.
WHOA NELLIE! Keith Jackson is the best. signed Mike in PA
Vern Lundquist is the best announcer. He is professional and sincere. He always sounds like a fan who is just excited to be there but he knows his stuff. The game is never about him and his ego. He is a dying breed in this profession so enjoy him while you can.
Verne Lundquist is over the hill. Todd Blackledge got tired of correcting Verne's mistakes and jumped to ESPN. I think Todd is the best analyst for college football.
Kirk Herbstreit is a joke. Last year the only two teams worthy of national title contention were Michigan and Ohio State, according to him. Way to go Kirk, ruin the Big 10's chances of credibility. Florida kicks the snot out of Ohio State all the rest of our teams look like we are bragging for no reason. It's better to be thought the fool Kirk, then to open your mouth and prove everyone is right...
WHOA NELLY! Keith Jackson is the best of all time.
You shouldn't hate Holtz because he has a lisp. It is a disorder and shouldn't be the reason you hate someone.
BRING BACK KEITH JACKSON!!!!!!!!!!
sean mcdonough. completely underrated, especially considering some of the boobs he gets stuck with.
Nessler and Herbstriet are definitely the best announcers with ABC/ESPN. Musburger is starting to age, and is showing signs of it - though he still has the best fumble call amongst all of 'em.
I swear, if I had to hear Bob Davie say, "Its not about the X's and the O's but the Jimmy's and the Joe's" one more time, I would have ripped my own face off and thrown it over the speakers, just so I wouldn't have to listen to that clown... though, I actually could just mute the TV.
And props to Lundquist. Very underrated - he's a victim of being on CBS. If he were on ABC or ESPN, I truly think he'd rival the lore that Keith Jackson's name carries (even though I personally never liked the guy).
Ron Franklin is solid and my other favorite is Gary Thorne. Great at hockey, underrated at football
I look forward to College Gameday every Saturday Morning. There's no better way to start a college football day. I look forward to Corso putting on the headgear. My Favorite announcers are Nessler, Musurger, and Herbstreit. I dislike Mark May because of his love for USC and the SEC, and his dislike of the Big Ten. Go buckeyes!!!
Great move for Doug Flutie. Saw him call a BC game last year and he was not in the least bit bias, just called it how he saw it. I expect that we will be seeing him on Saturdays very shortly.
anyone but lou holtz.
Holtz is horrible! How can he be on TV when you can't understand what he is saying and the fact he struggles with understanding the modern game! 59 Days until College Gameday is on!
They should pair up Nessler and Herbie. Easily the best 2 of the bunch. Musberger is terrible now. He's lost the edge with age. Bob Davie was over matched from the beginning. Flutie belongs in a high school stadium calling Massachusetts football games. He brings nothing to the table. Ron Franklin and Verne Lundquist are both excellent. Keith Jackson is the king.
I think the best announcers hands down are K. Herbstreit, M. Gottfried, and Ron Franklin. Now that's a team!
Why did ol' "Football 101" Bob Davie get demoted? His incessant use of the adjective "football", as in "He's a football player who knows how to make football plays at crucial times of the football game".
Herbstreit will be much better off with Musberger for two reasons:
1) ABC rarely covers SEC games (except for rivalries like GA/GA Tech and FSU/UF), so Herbstreit won't have to worry about hiding his true feelings about the SEC, which stem from the smackdown he personally received from the '92 Dawgs defense in the Citrus Bowl.
2) He's so good lookin'. And a really good color analyst, too.
The best ever is Keith Jackson. I would love to see him come out of retirement and broadcast the games once again for ABC. I hate Brent Musberger and his love for Michigan football. It is almost like he is married to Lloyd Carr. who can forget when Bob Griese broadcast the Mich/OSU game and kept referring to his son simply as Brian.
Mark May is the most biased commentator on the air today. He needs to be replaced. There are so may good and fair commentators out there looking for a chance and we have to listen to this tool.
Do people really like Musberger? That guy sucks. When he's on, I mute the TV and find the game on the radio. Herbstreet is the man though.
Mark May is the worst commentator on the air. As unquestionably bad as Bob D. was, he still was not as bad as May. What a biased person. If he does not like a team, they stink period. If he likes them, they can do no wrong. Kirk has his favorites, but he is always fair to everyone.
First off, for all you Corso haters, "oh he put on the Brutus head", "he never picks our team", blah blah blah, he does that for reactions. He knows the schools that love to go nuts by picking one way or another. There has been games where he went against everything he said during the show just to get a rouse out of the crowd. How can you say he knows nothing about the game? I guess being a DI coach you don't have to know anything. The homer that you should be talking about is Holtz. Has there been a week that he hasn't picked ND or SC? The guy is a joke! Suck on that Penn State!!! No one picks your team, go home.
1. Kieth Jackson (no debate)
Herbie is the man!
What about the legends of the SEC calling games locally? You will be hard pressed to do better than "There is Sugar raining from the sky!" Larry Munson is well into his 80's and still calls the best game in football. Legends like this are who the TV guys should emulate.
1. Not so fast my friend
2. The hats
3. The goofiness
4. The atmosphere he brings to college football
Got to love Lundquist...his voice just reminds me of saturdays in the fall...(and the 16th hole at Augusta) he is probably the best in the biz...
I respect Musburger...he can get a little cliched but i still think he is the best ABC has to offer (i love it when he sends it down to his 'ol pal Jack Arute)
Herbstreit is pretty fair i would say (but i live in Ohio so maybe i'm biased) but i have seen him rip OSU on a number of occassion too so i give the guy credit...
Ron Franklin is awesome just a pro he is great doing college basketball too
Whatever happened to Doug Cristiansen (spell check) he used to work for NBC and ESPN
Don Criqui with Notre Dame is pretty awesome too...got to love the voice and inflections
When is ESPN going to realizes that Brent Musburger needs to be put out to pasture? His time has passed. This feeling has nothing to do with any bias he may show towards one particular conference or team since I simply refuse to listen to him. When he is calling a game I either turn the television sound off and listen to the radio or not watch the game at all.
Brad Nessler is the best, bare none. I truly enjoy him and Bob Griese calling ballgames. How is it that ESPN/ABC can't get past Musberger? He is horrible and getting worse. Now they are going to put Kirk "Mr. Big 10 poutyface" Herbstreit in the booth with him? Thank goodness for internet radio broadcasts.
Herbie used to be good until his "The Ohio State" ego grew to the size of King Kong. Now Herbie is college football's Billy Packer. (Yuck!)
Corso is there simply for entertainment. Anybody who takes the bilge he spews seriously isn't too tightly wired himself.
Kudos to Verne Lundquist as well. He's awfully good.
I love College Gameday generally, but after last season's incessant, disparaging diatribes about the Gators, I have VERY little patience for ESPN/ABC commentators, analysts, and announcers. Doug "Flutie Flakes" vehemently bashed SEC schools any chance he had. Before UCLA beat USC, Flutie was beating the USC-OSU national title game horse. He then switched to Michigan's camp when the dream matchup didn't happen. Mark May openly hates the Gators (for no reason) and believes USC should be in every title game regardless of their record. Herbstreit is a BIGTIME BIGTEN homer [and he loves Miami as well for some reason] - he too beat the "Michigan got jobbed" horse last season until about halftime of the BCS title game, when he suddenly reversed course.
Come to think of it, NOBODY AT ESPN OR ABC seemed to agree with the pre-title game BCS standings. Could this have anything to do with the fact that CBS, their competitor, has the SEC contract, while ABC carries the Big Ten and Pac-10 contracts? Lou Holtz IS Mr. McGoo. Period. I like Lee Corso for the same reason I like Dick Vitale: nobody expects him to say something insightful, so he can ham it up! Griese's a follower who'll hype up whatever team he's told to promote. Verne, Brad, Chris Fowler - they're all fantastic. And Keith Jackson was awesome as well.
Now I know he's not an announcer, he's really just an analyst, but Mark May is absolutely the worst college football analyst on the planet. It's as if he is watching a completely different sport sometimes. I can't stand him. He has such an arrogance about him and for no reason whatsoever. He doesn't know a damn thing about college football.
I'd have to say Brad Nessler and Kirk Herbstreit. Herbstreit gives insightful commentary and will be critical of Ohio State when they deserve criticism, and Nessler is simply the best announcer in the game today.
Herbstreit is gay. Anyone and everyone on ABC is biased towards the little 10 and the domers. Best caller in the business is Ron Franklin!
where is the love for mark may? when you are on tv and you can barely read, write, or have an original thought...thats great
Kirk Herbstreit is very good at keeping the game simple and letting the action speak for itself. I feel Bob Davie did a nice job also and hate to see him leave. Mike Gottfried is excellent and just does his job, no frills, he does'nt put the focus on himself like alot of announcers. College game day is entertainment that is why Lee Corso is good for the game, he draws people to see what he will do next.
Only person I totally dislike is Mark May for obvious reasons.
Why they ever broke up Gottlieb and Franlin I don't understand. That was my favorite announcer team for a long time. They really brought a "big game" atmosphere to the broadcast.
I can't STAND Mark Jones. He is such a wannabe. Can't they come up with someone better than him?
When you think of big college football games, you have to think of Keith Jackson. Unfortunately, NOW when I think of big college games I think of Brent Musberger and his "band-wagoning", cliche riddled commentary. Verne Lundquist is good and Herbstreit wouldn't be too bad if he stopped jamming OSU football down our throat.
KEITH JACKSON!!!! "WHOA DOCTOR, that triple reverse ties the score at 63-63, we've seen nothing but razzle dazzle here today folks!" (Simpsons quote) Anyone who is immortalized on the Simpsons for their football commentary in automatically the best! His effortless quips and timeless voice will forever be engraved in my memmory.
The Worst 3
1. Keith Jackson
2. Dan Fouts
3. Mark May
The Best 3
1. Lee Corso
2. Brad Nessler
3. everybody else is fairly close
I will never have to listen to Davie whine about the "Bush Push" ever again!!!! I like the gameday drew the way it is but I really like Gary Thorne. His voice gets loounder when the play gets more intense. BYT, the worst is CBS's Steve Beurlien...that moron ruined last years AU/LSU game.
I for one love Herbie on GameDay. Although I'm sure his wife is thrilled to have him off the Thursday game with "poopsie", I mean Erin. Keith Jackson is by far the best and I wish the networks could lure him back for a few more games.
I think it'd be really awesome if Lee Corso had an on-air heart attack.
Wayne Larrivee is very under-rated. I don't even like the Big Ten but I get excited when he is doing sat. morning games.
In addition to Herbstreit and Ron Franklin, I liked Charles Davis, who was on TBS when they did games. I like is is with the NFL network or Fox now.
They need to put Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfreid back together on the ESPN saturday night game. Musberger is awful, everyone else is great. Go SEC and GEAUX TIGERS.
Being an LSU tiger fan, we get a lot of ESPN night games. Ron Franlin and Mike Gottfried have always done a wonderful job of knowing the players and teams. I hope you guys find a way to keep them together. Corso-worthless Herbstreit-worships USC Mark May-still thinks he should be playing. Nessler-very informed Verne Linquist on CBS very lively and witty
1)If I was as wrong at my job as many times as Corso is at his Job... I would have been let go years ago...He's not there for his brains...
2) Who ever said that Herbstriet can suck it is a total Tool and doesn't no crap about college football...Herbstriet always delivers an in depth analysis without bias...Once again you're a tool..
3) And Musburger is your friend because he's a tool too...
Brent Musberger must be the absolute worst in the annals of American college football. Lee Corso is a close second. Herbie is a Homer.
Herbstreit is a joke!! Did any of you catch his unbelievably childish behavior during the mock best ever college football team playoff show last year on ESPN Classic? I really thought he was going to cry when he found out the final game included 2 Nebraska teams. What a punk.....
ESPN is so biased its ridiculous! What film were these guys studying when they said UF didnt belong in the National Title Game? Herbie almost cried. Its time for ESPN to quit hyping its own agenda and provide fair and balanced coverage of all sports! Vern and Keith are who I prefer in the Fall.
Is this a debate...? Keith Jackson was the one and only. GO COUGS!
being a gator, maybe i'm partial. but mick hubert is awesome!!! Go Gators!!!
Larry Munson. Period.
ROLL TIDE !!!!!!!!!! SEC!!!!!!
erin andrews is fine
Whoever came up with the idea to split Franklin and Gottfried needs to be fired or something. For my money it doesn't get any better. Brad Nessler is probably the most underrated of the bunch although I think Bob Greise kinda brings him down a bit. Luckily ESPN teamed up Mike Patrick and Todd Blackledge. Those guys fill the Franklin-Gottfried void nicely IMHO. Gary Thorne has a great voice and I grew up watching him call NHL games on ESPN (and he's great at that and baseball), but if he calls one more FSU game I will kill myself. He just can't do football. Verne Lundquist is okay... seems like he roots too much for one side or the other. I used to like Gary Danielson until he went to CBS and campaigned for Florida to make the BCS title game. Not that they weren't worthy, but as a color analyst he was wayyyyy out of line.
(1) KEITH JACKSON, college football will never be the same without him.
(2) Dan Fouts - If I can't have Keith and Dan, then I'll just take Dan.
(3) Does anyone really take Lee Corso seriously?
(4) Musburger - A Klan favorite. He doesn't agree with racial injustice, he just doesn't want it to interfere with his Olpmpics! "Black-skinned storm troopers"!! Are you freakin kidding me?? AND don't let him interview any players before a game, HEY Musburger, what kinda team secrets you got for us this year??
Ron Franklin is by far the best play by play man in the business. Nothing better than watching a Saturday Night game on the Bayou, on the Plains, or between the hedges in Athens and hearing Ron make the call.
Keith Jackson, because he has no bias and was just a great overall guy and with a spectacular voice. Herbstreit is awful, his Big Ten/Big Joke bias is so evident. An announcer is supposed to present no bias, just call the game. Jackson is the best. Herbstreit was mediocre player and an even worse player.
I used to be a big musburger fan over the years, but i have turned over to verne lundquist, it doesnt matter what SEC teams are playing on CBS, he just makes the games so exciting. and thats coming from a big ten fan
franklin and gottfried need to reunite they were great as a team
nessler is legit, and musburger is good, eventhough he's biased toward ohio state
Mike Gottfried and Ron Franklin!! Period. They know the game, are well prepared no matter the schedule, and work hand-in-hand so well together. A pleasure to just listen to--let alone watch what they are describing. Why they are not together doing prime time games is a crime. Nessler is superb. Mussburger is a 'corporate guy', May is just plain lost on the air, and Corso is a fool - he loves himself too much.
Back a few years ago, you knew an SEC night game was the real deal when you had Mike Gottfried and Ron Franklin in the booth and Adrian Karsten on the field. And for those of you who never heard John Ward and Bill Anderson call a Tennessee game, you have not heard college football on the radio!
