Which School has the Best Tailgating?

The Grove at Ole Miss brings all kinds of fans, even these future Rebels cheerleaders.

I have a confession to make. My name is Andy, I'm 29-years-old, and I have never attended a good college tailgate.

My friends and I used to drink in the parking lot before high school games, but that involved a little topper for my Pepsi and endless games of cat-and-mouse with the local police. My college years were spent at UMass, which won the Division 1-AA Championship during my senior year, but it was Division 1-AA and the tailgating scene in Amherst consisted of kids playing hackey-sack while drinking bottles of overpriced beer.

My idea of tailgating is burgers blazing on a grill, Coors Light cans, and tossing a football around with friends. I have been to my fair share of tailgates before Patriots games (the Pats, by the way, are the clear-cut Super Bowl favorites this season), but those were NFL parties that often turned into competitions over who has the best grill and the most extravagant vehicle. What I've never experienced is the atmosphere before a college game … the 100,000 plus students squished into a few acres of parking lot hours before kickoff, celebrating the fun that is college football.

But all that is going to change this year, because I vow to visit a major college in November and soak up the phenomenon that is college tailgating. My only question: where? I’ve heard that the best location is either The Grove at Ole Miss or the scene in Columbus outside Ohio Stadium. So, you tell me. Which school has the best tailgating scene?

Week 1 Impressions

South Carolina's Cory Boyd had a strong game for the Gamecocks, but will be best be remembered for a comment he made on the sideline.

Week 1 is in the books and what a week it was. Tennessee and Oregon showed that they're the real deal with impressive victories over California and Stanford, respectively, while Colorado and new coach Dan Hawkins likely have a long season ahead of them after losing to lowly Montana State, 19-10. National powerhouses like Ohio State and Texas looked dominant, but are wins over the Northern Illinois' and North Texas' of the world really a show of dominance? In fact, 29 of the 119 Division 1-A teams played Div. 1-AA opponents.

The Heisman race is barely out of the blocks, but Brady Quinn (23 of 39, 256 yards, 1 rushing TD) and Marshawn Lynch (12 rushes, 74 yards, 0 TD) took steps backward while Troy Smith (18-for-25, 296 yards, 3 TD) and SIOC favorite Kenny Irons (21 rushes, 184 yards, 1 TD) had strong games.

But all the excitement wasn't limited to just the action on the field. Controversy is swirling around South Carolina tailback Cory Boyd, who remarked to an ESPN sideline camera "I'm back like cooked crack" after catching a touchdown pass from receiver Syvelle Newton. Meanwhile, at the University of Missouri, students took in their first Tigers game sans suds, as the school's decision to ban kegs from campus took effect. Luckily, the Tigers pasted Murray State, 47-7, so the students went home happy (and a little more sober than usual).

What are your Week 1 impressions? Which teams impressed or disappointed you? Has the environment at any games changed a la Missouri? Give us your thoughts.
