Q&A with Salé and Pelletier Posted: Thursday March 13, 2003 1:16 PMOlympic co-gold medalists Jamie, 25, and David, 28, are traveling the U.S. as part of the Smuckers Stars on Ice Tour
Pelletier: You know what? It's never played in my house. The problem with Love Story is every time I hear the music, I just get so damn nervous. Salé: It brings back that sick feeling in our bellies that means we're about to compete. SI: Now that you've turned professional, you have to be at the top of your game every night. How has that changed your approach to skating? Pelletier: We have to be on top of our game every night for a lot of reasons, but mainly because we respect what we do and we respect the people that come to see us. That's the main reason. SI: Here's a quote from Jamie: "We get so homesick being in the States because we miss our hockey so much. I'm a hockey fanatic and there's nothing on TV there." Uh, haven't you guys heard of ESPN? Pelletier: You don't understand. Of course we've heard of ESPN. But this is how it goes with them: Let's cover some football. Let's cover some basketball. Let's cover some spring training baseball. Let's cover some high school sports. Let's cover NCAA basketball. And then, all of sudden, hey, you get hockey. Then it's let's go back to basketball. In Canada, it's hockey, hockey, hockey, the Raptors, hockey.
Salé SI: After Salt Lake City, do you think you'll be forever linked to Anton Sikharulidze and Elena Berezhnaya? Salé: I think we're linked to them in the history books, but as far as hearing from the public -- and this is no offense to the Russians because they skated great -- people really comment on our skating and how proud they are of us. They don't talk about the Russians to us. SI: Dave, if you had quit figure skating after the 1998 Canadian Nationals, what would you be doing today? Pelletier: I'd be a firefighter. SI: Would he have made a good firefighter? Salé: Oh, yeah. He works on adrenaline and likes to help people. And he's a team player, obviously, if he's doing pairs. SI: On The Tonight Show, Charlie Sheen asked you to autograph a copy of Time magazine. Did you ask Charlie to sign something for you? Salé: No (laughs). Pelletier: What was funny was he asked us, 'Would you do this for me and my wife. Her name is Denise.' I was like: 'I know who your wife is.' SI: Jamie said when it comes to fitness, you guys treat your bodies like cars. So what kind of automobiles are you? Salé: I'm a Mercedes CLK. Pelletier: I'm a Corvette Z86. SI: Who has been the most famous person to congratulate you guys on your Olympic success? Salé: Robert Redford, Jay Leno and Michael Jordan. Pelletier: [Donald] Rumsfeld came to the [Olympic] village and shook my hand. SI: If you had gotten stuck with the silver medal, would you be competing in the 2006 Olympics? Salé and Pelletier: No. SI: Why can't America win a gold medal in the pairs? Salé: Ask the French judge! Pelletier: Canada wins a pairs championship once every 10 years. In America, it might be once every 20 years. SI: Can you promise us that you won't end up like Tonya Harding and appear on Celebrity Boxing? Salé: I think I can. I have more class than that. SI: Who is the bigger diva on the Stars on Ice Tour: Katarina Witt or Alexi Yagudin? Pelletier: It's got to be Katy. But she is a great diva.
SI Salé: To be honest with you, we've been skating really great. I think we've had one bad night out of 40 shows. I would say we've been an eight or nine out of 10. SI: There's a movie in the works about your pursuit of the gold. Can you cast the starring roles for us? Salé: I would like to have Brad Pitt for Dave. He's really hot and kind of blonde, like Dave. Pelletier: She only says that because if they choose Brad Pitt, then she'll want to play herself. I'd say Alyssa Milano. She looks like Jamie a little bit, and she's cute. SI: Finally, tell the truth, you guys really did beat Anton and Elena, right? Salé: Nice try, Richard. --Richard Deitsch Issue date: March 17, 2003
