Track and Field
Ferguson, a sophomore sprinter and hurdler at South Carolina, ran a meet-record 13.60 to win the 110-meter hurdles at the Junior Pan American Games in Bridgetown, Barbados. He also won gold in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay.
Jennifer Marcus, Miami
Baton Twirling
Marcus helped her team, Encore, win a gold medal for the U.S. at the 2003 World Baton Twirling Championships on Sunday. A junior at Florida State, she also won titles in solo, two baton and three baton at the U.S. Twirling Association championships.
Clay Millican, Drummonds, Tenn
Drag Racing
Millican, 37, raced to his 26th career victory at the International Hot Rod Association Northern Nationals in Martin, Mich., last week, breaking the record for top-fuel wins held by Don (Big Daddy) Garlits.
Kim Richards, Johnson City, N.Y.
Powerlifting
Richards, 21, won gold medals in the female deadlift, bench press and combination bench press/deadlift at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games. She was named 2003 Special Olympics New York female athlete of the year.
Ali Anissipour, Seattle
Karate
Anissipour, a senior at the University of Washington, won gold medals in the men's kumite +80kg and open kumite classes at the USA National Karate-do Federation's championships. He also won the gold in the kumite +80 at the 2003 USA Open.
Sharon Day, Costa Mesa, Calif.
Track and Field
Day, a recent graduate of Costa Mesa High, cleared 6' 3/4" to win the high jump at the Junior Pan American Games. She was also a member of the Mustangs' soccer, volleyball and track teams, all of which were undefeated and won league championships last year.
Chris Rotelli, Rumford, R.I.
Lacrosse
Rotelli, a recent graduate of Virginia who led the Cavaliers to the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championship, was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference's 2002-03 male athlete of the year. He is the first lacrosse player to receive that honor.
