Free Diving
Verbeck, 38, set an American record for static apnea (holding one's breath while floating facedown in water) of 6:48 during the U.S. free-diving team trials in Honolulu. He surpassed the existing mark by three seconds; the world record is 8:06.
Marcus Fugate, Fairport, N.Y.
Tennis
Marcus, 14, went undefeated in singles and doubles at the World Junior Tennis championship in the Czech Republic, leading the U.S. team to its first-ever championship in the event. He did not lose a set in his five singles matches.
Jennifer Tenbarge, Carmel, IND.
Golf
Tenbarge, 41, made two holes in one during the second round of the Woodland Country Club championships. She aced the 115-yard 2nd hole with an eight-iron and the 155-yard 17th with a nine-wood on her way to winning the tournament.
Doug Guyer, Valley Forge, PA.
Dragonboat Racing
Guyer, 40, rowed on three gold-medal-winning boats at the U.S. Dragonboat National Championships on Lake Merritt, Calif. He won in the Premier Open, Masters and Mixed Masters divisions and qualified for the 2003 world championships in Shanghai.
Braden Gellenthien, Hudson, Mass.
Archery
Braden, 16, has set six individual records this year in outdoor compound bow for ages 16 and under. He now holds seven of the 10 individual records kept. He also helped set three records this year in three-man events.
Edward Korfantyk, Portland
Fencing
Korfanty, 50, took first place in the 50-59 age group in men's sabre at the Veteran World Championships in Tampa. He and the three other American competitors swept the top four positions in the 24-person international field.
Heather Sagan, Warrenton, VA.
Track and Field
Sagan, 22, a recent graduate of Liberty University with a 3.877 GPA, was named Division I's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in track. She won an NCAA indoor championship in the mile, giving the Big South conference its first national champion in any sport.
