John Besson, Lake Ooswego, Ore.
Marathon
Besson, 90, a retired rear admiral in the Navy, set an American record for the 90-plus age group when he finished the Portland Marathon in 6:48:44. He broke the mark of 7:25:12 established by Abraham Weintraub in 2000.
Mike Bevilacqua, Marshfield, Mass.
Soccer
Bevilacqua, a Gettysburg (Pa.) College senior, scored a goal with 1:33 remaining in a 1-0 win over Messiah College. Messiah had been the top-ranked Division III team going into the match and had not been scored upon in nine games.
Senta Willenborg, Dyersville, Iowa
Golf
Willenborg, a junior at Simpson College, became the third of her sisters to win the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference individual championship. Her sister Leah won it four times, from 1992 to '95, and Hannah won it in '96 and '99.
Tony Sutton, Akron
Football
Schriger, Sutton, a sophomore running back at the College of Wooster, ran for 313 yards and five touchdowns during a 37-14 win over Ohio Wesleyan; he set a North Coast Athletic Conference record for rushing yards and tied marks for touchdowns and points scored.
Adam Swartzbaugh, Rockport, Maine
Mountain Biking
Adam, a senior at Camden Hills Regional High, won the junior division of the NORBA national cross-country championship at Mount Snow, Vt. He completed the 24-mile course in 1:45:39.10, more than two minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.
Judy Jeanes, Mendenhall, Pa.
Canoeing
Jeanes, 37, swept the three events that make up the Delaware River Grand Slam distance canoe series when she won the 13-mile state championship race in two hours, 11 minutes. She had previously won nine- and eight-mile races.
Jim Hulsman, Albuquerque
Basketball
Hulsman, 72, was named high school coach of the year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association and the National Federation Coaches Association. He recently retired with seven state titles in 34 years and a record of 660-223.
