Kara Lynn Joyce, Ann Arbor, Mich. Swimming Kara Lynn, an Ann Arbor Pioneer High senior, set a national high school record of 48.59 in the 100-yard freestyle during the state Division I title meet. She also swam on relay teams that set national records in the 200- and 400-yard freestyles.
Courtney Kupets, McLean, Va. Gymnastics Courtney, 16, won the uneven bars at the World Gymnastics Championships in Debrecen, Hungary; she is the first American since 1993 to win the world title in that event. Courtney's 9.55 score topped World Cup champion Ioana Petrovschi of Romania.
Kyle Brady, Tooele, Utah Football Kyle, a Tooele High senior defensive back, intercepted 31 passes in his career, breaking the previous state record of 20. He picked off three in this year's 3A state semifinal and two in the championship game. Tooele won the state title 28-24 over Wasatch High.
Leslie Whitfield, Hurdle Mills, N.C. Volleyball Whitfield, a UNC Asheville senior, set a Division I record for most digs in a season with 763, breaking a mark that had stood since 1989. Her total included 50 against Western Carolina, the highest single-match total by any player this season.
Kristyn Bates, Greenfield, Mass. Field Hockey Bates, a senior forward at Bentley College, became the first player named to the Division II championships' all-tournament team four times. She scored the Falcons' only goal in its 1-0 victory over Bryant (R.I.) College in the semifinals.
Carol Park, Wrightsville, Pa. Yachting Park, a 44-year-old consultant, had 14 first-place and seven second-place finishes in the 43-race season of the Susquehanna Yacht Club. She became the first woman to win the club's Frye Trophy, given to the best overall racer, in the 29 years it has been awarded.
Stephanie Romanko, North Brunswick, N.J.
Soccer Romanko, a Montclair State senior goaltender, set a Division III record for minutes played with 7,842.04; she played every minute of every Red Hawks game in her four-year career. She has the four best goals-against averages for a season in school history.
