Michael Watson, Kansas City, Mo. Basketball Watson, a junior guard at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, scored 54 points in a victory over Oral Roberts. The total broke a 12-year-old school record and is the most by an NCAA Division I men's player this season.
Bobby Goepfert, Kings Park, N.Y. Hockey Goepfert, a freshman goalie at Providence College, was chosen to play for the U.S. at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the tournament he had a 4-1-0 record and led all goalies in save percentage (.937).
Kelsey Hughes, South Burlington, Vt. Tennis Kelsey, a senior at South Burlington High, has gone 51-0 through three years of varsity singles play. She led the Rebels to three state championships and last season won the state singles title.
Megan Tomes, Cincinnati
Swimming
Megan, a senior at Anderson High, won the Division I 200-yard individual medley at the Ohio State swimming and diving championships for the second year in a row, setting a state record of 1:59.46. She also won the 100-yard freestyle.
Ariel Leahy, Alpharetta, Ga. Gymnastics Ariel, now 8, won the nationals in level 2 in the 7-year-old age group on the parallel bars and on the vault at the AAU Gymnastics Championships. As a result, she was named the all-around national champion for her age group.
Gary Morlan, Newberg, Ore. Trapshooting Morlan, 69, a retired plumbing salesman, surpassed four records in the Pacific International Trapshooting Association by shooting 3,500 targets in one day, 13,700 in a week, 22,500 in a month and 132,300 in one year.
Peter J.B. Serkes, Faber, Va. Track and Field Peter, a sophomore at Nelson County High, led the Governors to their first district indoor track title in 20 years, winning the 300-, 600- and 1,000-yard races and the pole vault. He was named the indoor track athlete of the year for the Dogwood school district.
