Anthony Whittington, Buffalo, W.Va. Baseball Anthony, a senior lefthander at Buffalo High, pitched a seven-inning no-hitter and set a state record by striking out every batter except one, who reached first on an error. In his two previous starts he had 38 strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs in 14 innings.
C.J. Ireland, Alliston, Ont. Hockey Ireland, a senior forward at Mercyhurst College, scored 43 goals this season, the most ever by a woman Laker, as she led her school to its first-ever College Hockey America Championship. She was named to the first team of the all-conference squad.
Monique Tubbs, Boston Track and Field Tubbs, a senior at Jacksonville University, set a school indoor record in the 55-meter dash and an outdoor record in the 100-meter dash, and was named Atlantic Sun athlete of the week. She is the first female Dolphin to become a four-time All-America.
Jerico Weitzel, Jacksonville
Wrestling
Jerico, a seventh-grader at the Bolles School, became the first middle schooler in Florida to become a high school state wrestling champion. Wrestling in the 145-pound class, he beat a senior 3-1 in the finals of the state championship.
Kelly Stevison, Manassas, Va. Gymnastics Kelly, a senior at Osbourn Park High, scored the first 10 in the history of the Virginia state championships while competing on the vault in her final high school competition. Earlier this year she won the Northeastern Region all-around championship.
Todd Garcia, Woodbridge, Calif. Fast-pitch Softball Garcia, 35, a catcher for the U.S. national team, hit two home runs to give his team a 2-1 victory over Canada and the gold medal at the Pan Am Games Qualifier in Guatemala City. In the 15-game tournament Garcia batted .484 and had six homers and 17 RBIs.
Deb Remmerde, Rock Valley, Iowa Basketball Deb, a senior guard at Rock Valley High, led the Rockets to their third straight Iowa state championship and was named MVP of the tournament. She set state records in career points (2,756), season points (859), career three-pointers (353) and season three-pointers (144).
