Yu-Fong Chen, Sophomore, Basketball Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill.
During senior year of high school, our
basketball team was trying on uniforms. I went for XL shorts, which were too
big, so I pulled them off, knowing that my mesh shorts were underneath. But as I
bent down, my mesh shorts went down too, and I mooned everyone in the
room -- including four male coaches! So for my senior gift, I got a G-string
with a note: "Don't pull a Yu-Fong."
Megan Kale, Junior, Basketball Northside High School, Fort Smith, Ark. During a summer basketball game, I intercepted a telegraphed pass. But
as I tipped the ball out of bounds, it hit a guy who was holding a cup of coffee
in the front row of the bleachers. The coffee went everywhere! I apologized and
turned bright red; then later I found out that his daughter was the one who
threw the
pass.
Katie Lloyd, Freshman, Basketball Fruita (Colo.) Monument High School
I was under the basket when a teammate's free throw bounced off the rim and
into my hands. I turned and dribbled toward the other basket. At half-court I
heard everybody yelling my name. Confused, I dished the ball out-of-bounds and
landed on my butt, facing the bleachers. I realized then I had run the wrong
way.
Natalie Childers, Freshman, Swimming Edgewood High School, Ellettsville, Ind. In the first swim meet of the year, my coach entered me in both the 200-
and 400-meter freestyle. In my first race, I got into the blocks and took off. I
thought it was the 400, so I kept going after eight laps [200 meters]. Had I
stopped then, I would have gotten second place -- because the race was
actually the 200! Instead, I was disqualified.
Rosaleen Chiu 1994 Graduate of Wellesley College, Crew During my junior
year, in a big race, I was feeling pumped and probably a little too excited to
double-check if my oar lock [the device that holds the oar in place] was totally
tight. Two thirds into the race, as we were neck and neck with two
other boats, my oar popped out and flew above my head. The coxswain had to stop
everybody so I could untangle myself -- I was so
humiliated!
Kelly-Ann Franklin, Senior, Softball Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Conn. During my first-ever softball game, in eighth grade, I worked my way to
a 2-and-2 count and waited for the perfect pitch -- just like my coach
wanted. When I hit the ball, I was so excited that for a split second, I forgot
to run. When I finally took off, I looked up to see where the ball was and ended
up tripping over a small rock and falling flat on my face -- not exactly the
way a cleanup hitter wants to make her
debut!
Kimberly Kicielinski, Sophomore, Basketball Baldwin High School, Pittsburgh I was keeping stats at an intense basketball game, which was into triple
overtime. After a timeout, we changed our seating arrangement. The ref was
standing in front of me, so I tried to place my hand on a chair to peer around
him, but the chair had been moved. I crashed to the ground -- and missed the
play.
