Leading the way for the U.S. will be slalom ace Koznick Mike Powell

Born: November 24, 1975

Residence: Burnsville, Minn.

Upcoming Event: Alpine World Championships, Vail/Beaver Creek, Colo., January 30-February 14

Worth Watching Because: Koznick is a fighter. She overcame a string of injuries (back, knee, frostbitten toes) that slowed her through the mid-'90s and shook off a disappointing performance at the Nagano Games to establish herself as a star in the slalom. Koznick has won the last four U.S. slalom championships but posted her first two career World Cup victories just last season. An aggressive, intense competitor, Koznick has proven that she can burst out of the starter's gate and have a blistering run. On occasion, however, her take-no-prisoners approach has caused her to crash and burn. Last year, Koznick, the unofficial leader of the U.S. women's team, worked hard to get healthy and match her mental focus to her physical talent. The effort paid off with a second-place finish in the 1998 World Cup slalom standings. Now that she has more experience and more wins under her belt, coach Georg Capaul describes "Koz" as "dangerous."

Greatest Success: Winning her first World Cup event in 1998 at Are, Sweden.

Quote/Unquote: "I've gone through a lot of things in my life and I know I'm a strong person. I'm proud of myself for being able to bounce back."

Cool Fact: Growing up, Koznick's sports heroes were Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky and Kirby Puckett.
