They lost 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur with Jermain Defoe scoring twice against his former club. Jermaine Jenas also struck for Spurs while Jerome Thomas fired a consolation for Charlton with 20 minutes remaining. Three days later, though, Charlton handed Liverpool their third defeat in four league games. Darren Bent scored first after Charlton were awarded a controversial penalty and Luke Young made it 2-0. Charlton coach Alan Curbishley, tipped by opposite number Rafael Benitez beforehand for the England job, said: "We got lucky with the penalty. Darren was going in there full throttle. I don't think he's dived. Theref'sgivenapenaltybutyoucancountonone handtheamountwehave had inthelastfiveyears." On Sunday, Charlton visit Eastlands having lost 5-2 at home to Manchester City in December.
