Wednesday's 2-1 defeat in Hannover highlighted HSV's shortcoming in midfield with Rafael van der Vaart sorely missed, but the Dutchman is on the road to recovery and has set his sights on a return for the clash with Bayern on March 4. In his absence, he will be hoping his team mates can keep Hamburg in the title race, but after losing in Hannover, that appears to be a tall order. Particularly since coach Thomas Doll has also lost Ailton to a broken jaw and Stefan Beinlich with a torn hip muscle in that defeat. Naohiro Takahara and Benjamin Lauth should take their places as HSV try to close the gap on Bayern to seven points on Saturday. Hamburg have yet to lose against Mainz in their three previous Bundesliga meetings while they have won their last five games at the AOL-Arena.
