Terim quits as trio of clubs pull away in Serie A title race
Posted: Mon February 26, 2001 at 5:16 p.m. EST ROME (Ticker) -- With his team winless in five games and his relationship with the club president souring, Fatih Terim resigned on Monday as the coach of Fiorentina of the Italian League. Meanwhile, Roma, Juventus and Lazio all won on Sunday to set up a three-horse race for the "Scudetto" with 14 games left in the Serie A season. Terim's announcement came two days after ex-Fiorentina player Roberto Baggio scored in each half as Brescia finished in a 2-2 tie at Fiorentina. Club president Vittorio Cecchi Gori reportedly had a heated argument with Terim after Saturday's match. The "Viola" has not registered a win since January 13, when they beat AC Milan -- a club rumored to be interested in hiring the Turkish coach. Vincenzo Montella and Emerson scored twice in the final 10 minutes as AS Roma beat Vicenza, 2-0, to maintain its six-point lead over Juventus at the top of the Serie A standings. The "Giallorossi" won their fifth in a row and a club-record eighth road game of the season after tumbling out of the UEFA Cup on February 22. Roma coach Fabio Capello made the shocking announcement that he is interested in taking over for Sir Alex Ferguson when he steps down as coach of English giants Manchester United at the end of next season. He has won league titles with AC Milan in Italy and Real Madrid in Spain. Igor Tudor's header after nine minutes propeled Juventus to a 3-0 win over AC Milan. Filippo Inzaghi collected his team-leading ninth of the season and reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane added a goal in injury time as Juve won their third straight contest. Hernan Crespo recorded a hat trick to lead Lazio past Verona, 5-3. The defending Italian League champions rebounded from being knocked out of the Champions League in midweek to stay two points behind Juve in third, but opened an eight-point cushion over fourth-place Parma. Savo Milosevic scored twice as Parma recorded its second straight shutout and third win in a row with a 5-0 rout of Perugia. The Parmesans were also dumped from European competition in midweek, falling to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Cup. Atalanta dropped to fifth place after registering a third straight tie in a scoreless affair at home against bottom-club Bari, which ended its four-game losing skid. Marco Ferrante broke the tie in the 89th minute as Inter Milan beat Udinese, 2-1. Inter jumped to eighth place in Serie A after completing a disastrous week for Italian clubs in European competitions, losing to Alaves of Spain in the UEFA Cup. In other action, Giuseppe Signori scored his second goal of the match with three minutes left to lift Bologna to a 2-1 victory over Napoli. Bologna's captain has tallied three goals in the last two games. Cristiano Lucarelli used his muscle to maintain possession before turning to strike his 10th goal of the season to lead Lecce past Reggina, 2-1. The hosts brought their four-game winless streak to an end.© 2003 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP
