COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Major League Soccer and ESPN have reached agreement on a new contract to replace a package that ended this season.

MLS said the new deal was for five years and would be announced Monday. The network confirmed an agreement had been reached but refused to discuss details.

"This deal shows ESPN's commitment to soccer and the stability of Major League Soccer," league spokesman Dan Courtemanche said Sunday.

ESPN spokesman Chris LaPlaca said there was an "agreement in principal" but would not elaborate.

"We would expect to have some sort of formal announcement soon," he said.

The league's three-year contract with ESPN recently expired.

Courtemanche said that under the new deal, most games would start at 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

"This year it was a challenge for fans to find when and what channel MLS soccer was on," he said. "Next year, fans will have a consistent channel and time to watch games."
