Cash for Clash San Jose club sold to group led by MLS founderPosted: Sunday August 02, 1998 11:22 AM
SAN JOSE, California (AP) -- The San Jose Clash have been sold to an investment group led by Alan Rothenberg, the founder of Major League Soccer, for a record $25 million. "This is an opportunity I've been looking at almost since the time we founded Major League Soccer," Rothenberg, president of the U.S. Soccer Federation, said Friday at a Lake Buena Vista, Florida news conference. That amount is the highest paid for an MLS team. In 1997, investors paid $20 million for the Miami Fusion. The independent investment group led by Rothenberg also includes Peter Ueberroth, former major league baseball commissioner, and Dentsu Inc., the Tokyo-based advertising agency. "I'm delighted that the deal is going through," Clash president and general manager Peter Bridgwater said. "I have enormous respect and admiration for Alan .... His involvement can only mean good things for the Clash."
