Fusion's Serna out for season Posted: Friday August 06, 1999 06:37 PM
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Top Miami Fusion scorer Diego Serna will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Serna, who has 10 of the Fusion's 26 goals this season, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Sunday against the Columbus Crew. Miami is battling New England and Tampa Bay for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, with the NY/NJ MetroStars trailing behind. Serna, 25, who is fourth in Major League Soccer in goals scored, set a team record with 11 last year when he was the Fusion's most valuable player. He will likely be replaced by Tony Kuhn in Saturday's game against the Metro Stars. The Fusion expect Eric Wynalda to return from a knee injury in mid-September. Wynalda –- acquired in a trade this season -- is the leading scorer in the history of the U.S. national team but hasn't yet played for the Fusion.
