CHICAGO (AP) -- Zach Thornton stopped three shots, including a penalty kick in the 71st minute Wednesday to lead Chicago to a 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards.

Thornton spoiled Tony Meola's debut in goal for the Wizards. Meola spent six-months on the Kansas City injured-reserve list with a knee injury.

The Fire (13-11) did not score until the 56th minute when Chicago defender Lubos Kubik launched a pass to Ante Razov. Razov, the Fire's leading scorer, fired a shot into the far corner of the net.

Kansas City (7-17) had its best chance to score 15 minutes later, when Wizards midfielder Chris Klein was brought down hard in the box. Preki failed to convert the ensuing penalty kick when Thornton deflected his shot off the crossbar.

Chicago sealed the victory when Roman Kosecki and Andrew Lewis fed the ball to Peter Nowak at the top of the Wizards' box. Nowak scored to give the Fire a 2-0 lead.
