PASADENA, California (AP) -- Roy Myers scored in the second and 58th minutes Wednesday as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the San Jose Clash 3-1. Los Angeles moved into a first place tie in the MLS Western Conference with Colorado (16-8). Greg Vanney added a goal on a 71st minute penalty kick for the Galaxy (16-9). Alejandro Sequeira scored in the 59th minute for San Jose (14-11), whose three-game winning streak was ended at the Rose Bowl.
Myers' first goal began when goalkeeper Joe Cannon punched Vanney's corner kick away from the net to Los Angeles forward Cobi Jones, who directed the ball to Danny Pena. Pena then headed the ball back to Myers, whose shot from 15 yards out deflected off the right goal post into the net. Los Angeles increased its lead to 2-0 when Carlos Hermosillo slid a pass to Myers, who put a short shot into the net. San Jose scored its goal a minute later when Sequeira sprinted past the Galaxy defense and put a shot from just inside the penalty area past Los Angeles goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. Vanney then put the first penalty kick of his four-season MLS career into the top of the net. The Clash led 17-15 in shots, with both teams taking nine shots on goal. Hartman made eight saves while Cannon made six.
