More Moreno MLS re-signs D.C. forward to multiyear dealPosted: Tuesday October 19, 1999 04:36 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- D.C. United's Bolivian forward Jaime Moreno, seventh on Major League Soccer's career goal list, has re-signed with the American league through the 2002 World Cup plus option years, MLS executive vice president Ivan Gazidis announced Tuesday. Exact terms of the contract were not released. Moreno has scored 45 goals in 85 games over four seasons and helped D.C. United to a pair of MLS titles and several other tournament championships. "We're very pleased Jaime has made this commitment to MLS," Gazidis said. "Like others, Jaime is a player who developed his name in MLS, not outside of MLS, and is one of our most exciting young talents. He put exclamation point on his signing with his performance this weekend." Moreno, 25, the first Bolivian to play in the English Premier League when Middlesbrough acquired him in 1994, scored both goals in D.C. United's 2-0 victory over Miami on Saturday in the first of their three-game first-round playoff series. MLS renegotiated Moreno's contract, which had two option years remaining on it, leaving the league with about 5-10 key players Gazidis said he would like re-sign and commit to the league in the immediate future. Los Angeles goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and New England forward Joe-Max Moore are two players whose contracts expire at the end of the season. Gazidis estimated that 30-40 percent of MLS players' contracts expire at the end of any one season. Unlike other pro leagues, MLS operates under a "single-entity" structure whereby the league signs all players to contracts and allocates them to the 12 clubs by either assigning them to a specific team or dispersing them through a draft.
