1. How does it feel playing against your old team?
John Maessner: Whenever you play a team you spent some time with, it makes it a little extra special. You know the guys well, and now you're playing against them. It's a little different.
2. What was your reaction when you got traded?
John Maessner: Over All-Star weekend, someone let the cat out of the bag a day or two early, so I heard some rumors. Then when I finally got the call, I was excited to go back to D.C. I think it's still the best club in the league. I had some good memories, good times in '96 and '97, so I was happy to go back.
3. In a word, describe your experience with the Fusion.
John Maessner: In a word? How about three words?OK
John Maessner: Up and down.
4. What's your Japanese name?
John Maessner: Yoshi Katsu. My grandfather's name was Katsu Yoshi. It flip-flopped.
5. Who's your favorite Stooge?
John Maessner: Curly.
6. Who's your closest friend on the D.C. team?
John Maessner: I'm lucky. I've got a few good friends, but Curt Onalfo -- we were roommates in college [at the University of Virginia] -- and Richie Williams. We lived together in college, too. Curt was in my year, and Richie was a year younger, so I spent more time with Curt. We're all good friends.
7. What are you going to do in the off-season?
John Maessner: The past three off-seasons, I've been going to Hawaii, but I don't know if I will be able to make it out there this year with the new baby. I'm going to get my youth coaching license in January in Cocoa Beach with Curt. I might go to Rome before pre-season for some training to get ready for the MLS season. I have a friend in Rome who's connected with the surrounding teams.
8. Who's the leader of D.C. United?
John Maessner: I guess you'd have to say Marco Etcheverry.
9. What MLS player gives you the most trouble?
John Maessner: Ben Olsen and I had some good duels when we were playing against each other, but now he's on the other side of the field playing with me.
10. What do you eat for breakfast?
John Maessner: Usually a banana, bowl of cereal or maybe some wheat toast with jelly.
11. OK. We'll do 11. How much sleep do you get in an average 24-hour period?
John Maessner: Eight or 10 hours, including naps. But the numbers have gone down in the last four months [with a newborn girl]. Actually I feel better. She gets me up early, but it's nice to get up earlier.
