Made in America Dallas forward Kreis wins league's MVP awardPosted: Friday November 19, 1999 03:23 PM
DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dallas Burn forward Jason Kreis today became the first American-born player to be named Major League Soccer's Most Valuable Player. Kreis, the Burn's all-time leading scorer with 48 goals and 34 assists, edged out D.C. United's Marco Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno in the voting for the award conducted by members of the media, MLS team coaching staffs and team general managers. "I'm thrilled to get this award," he said. "Awards like this have to be any player's lifelong ambition." Kreis was the first player in MLS history to post 15 goals and 15 assists in a season and just the fourth to collect more than 50 points in a campaign. He won the scoring title with 18 goals and 15 assists for 51 points. "This award is really more a statement of how the team played this year more than how I played," said Kreis, whose team reached the Western Conference finals. "The team goal of winning the championship is what I really wanted. All my goals came off of plays my teammates set up, and without them I wouldn't be receiving this honor."
Kreis was named MLS Player of the Week a record six times. He also was the Player of the Month for June. Kreis contributed to the Burn's best record in team history (19-13) and set several club records, including most points, most goals and most assists. He also registered a team-record seven game-winning assists and five multi-goal games and equaled his own record for most game-winning goals in a season with six.
