NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. national team midfielder Eddie Lewis has been transferred from the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer to English first division club Fulham, the American league announced Wednesday.

Lewis, who had a year remaining on his MLS contract, has 20 caps for the United States, including all six matches this year, and two goals. His last score came Jan. 29 in a 2-1 friendly victory over Chile.

Fulham paid just under $2 million for the 25-year-old left-sided flank player, who earned a starting place on the U.S. national side last year under coach Bruce Arena.

Lewis, who had hinted he wanted to play in Europe, has played in 115 games in four MLS seasons, scoring nine goals and earned selection to the MLS' "Best 11" last season.

His transfer earned San Jose two "allocations" under the MLS' single-entity system. In MLS, all player contracts are owned by the league. Star players are allocated to the various teams in the name of fairness and competitive balance.

San Jose traded one of the allocations for selections in the MLS draft to the Chicago Fire, which used the designation to acquire Bulgarian forward Hristo Stoichkov.
