United makes five draft-day trades
Posted: Monday February 05, 2001 8:16 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. United made five draft-day trades Monday, ending a three-day, eight-trade overhaul that dispersed veterans and brought several promising young players to Washington.
After three trades Saturday designed to get under Major League Soccer's salary cap, United wheeled and dealed to get the most out the draft:
Goalkeeper Tom Presthus and the No. 10 overall pick was sent to the Columbus Crew for the No. 3 overall selection.
Forward A.J. Wood was traded to the Kansas City Wizards for a third-round pick, No. 36 overall.
The No. 36 selection was then shipped along with veteran defender Geoff Aunger to the Colorado Rapids for a second-round pick, No. 18 overall.
The No. 18 selection was then traded to the Miami Fusion for a second-round pick in 2002.
United then made another deal with Miami, trading midfielder Antonio Otero and future considerations for this year's No. 28 overall pick.
Over the weekend, United traded U.S. national team players Jeff Agoos, Richie Williams and Carlos Llamosa.
The trades left United with the third, fourth and eighth picks in the draft. They selected midfielder Mark Lisi of Clemson, New Zealand-born midfielder Ryan Nelsen of Stanford and 16-year-old forward Santino Quaranta.
Quaranta, who is training with the U.S. national Under-17 team, becomes the youngest player signed by MLS. The previous record-holder, Bobby Convey, was drafted by United last year.
