NEW YORK (AP) -- Teenagers Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley were among the 22 starters voted to play in the Major League Soccer All-Star game.

The game will be played July 28 in San Jose, Calif.

Seventeen of the players are Americans, including the first three teen-agers selected for the game. Convey plays for D.C. United, Donovan for the San Jose Earthquakes and Beasley for the Chicago Fire.

Defender Jeff Agoos of San Jose was the leading vote-getter with 34,711 in the final balloting released on Thursday.

Convey is injured and will not play in the game.

Also, Clint Mathis of the New York-New Jersey MetroStars was chosen for the East team, but will not play because of an injury

EAST starters

F- Brian McBride - Columbus (will be appearing in his sixth All-Star Game ... three prior starts)

F- Alex Pineda Chacon - Miami (first All-Star Game)

M- Marco Etcheverry - D.C. (selected as a six-time All-Star ... sat out 2000 with an injury)

M- Bobby Convey - D.C. (youngest All-Star in MLS history, but he will sit this one out due to hernia surgery)

M- Clint Mathis - MetroStars (was on his way to being league's Honda MVP prior to tearing ACL)

M- Preki - Miami (only MLS player to physically start all six MLS All-Star Games ... of course 2001 is still a few weeks away)

M- Ben Olsen - D.C. (has not played in an MLS game this year but is expected to see action soon)

D- Eddie Pope - D.C. (finished second in votes with 26,886)

D- Carlos Llamosa - Miami (key figure in Miami's defensive prowess)

D- Mike Petke - MetroStars (second MLS All-Star Game, first as a starter)

GK- Nick Rimando - Miami (first MLS All-Star Game ... did not lead in goalkeeper voting until final count)

WEST starters

F- Ariel Graziani - Dallas (second MLS All-Star Game)

F- Jason Kreis - Dallas (fourth MLS All-Star Game)

M- Landon Donovan - San Jose (first MLS All-Star Game)

M- Chris Armas - Chicago (U.S. Soccer's Player of the Year in 2000)

M- Chad Deering - Dallas (Dallas fans came out strong in numbers ... World Cup '98 veteran)

M- DaMarcus Beasley - Chicago (rising star will be making his first MLS All-Star appearance)

M- Mauricio Cienfuegos - Los Angeles (will be appearing in his sixth All-Star Game ... one prior start)

D- Lubos Kubik - Dallas (Started '98 and '99 All-Star Games)

D- Marcelo Balboa - Colorado (sixth MLS All-Star Game, although he sat out 1996 with an injury)

D- Jeff Agoos - San Jose (leading vote-getter ... will be appearing in his sixth All-Star Game, four prior starts ... came in at halftime of '98 game)

GK-Joe Cannon - San Jose (first MLS All-Star Game for league's leading goalkeeper - 1.03 GAA)

Notes:

An elite group of nine MLS players have been members of the previous five All-Star teams:

  • Brian McBride
  • Carlos Valderrama (started five previous MLS All-Star Games ... could make his way into the starting lineup this year with injuries)
  • Mauricio Cienfuegos
  • Cobi Jones
  • Marco Etcheverry
  • Preki (only player to start five previous games)
  • Jeff Agoos
  • John Harkes (Harkes was selected to the '96 ASG but did not play)
  • Marcelo Balboa (four prior starts -- 1997-2000
  • selected but did not play in 1996 due to injury)

    Angles:

  • Americans lead the way - Agoos was top vote-getter (34,711) and youngsters Donovan, Convey and Beasley were all up there
  • Preki - only MLS player to have physically started five previous All-Star Games, he's 38 (oldest starter) and still going strong
  • Rimando and Cannon both were selected by the fans despite not ever leading voting until the final count came in Thursday
  • Upstarts San Jose (3 starters) and Miami (four starters) fared well in voting
  • Chicago, with the second-best MLS record, had only two players on the West squad
  • Dallas fans apparently picked up their voting in the final weeks
