CHICAGO (AP) -- Carlos Bocanegra and Evan Whitfield scored Thursday night and the Chicago Fire beat the Dallas Burn 2-0 in the opening game of the first-round MLS playoff series.

Bocanegra scored in the 40th minute, taking a corner kick from Eric Wynaldas and sending a powerful header past goalkeeper Matt Jordan.

In stoppage time, Chicago's Sergi Daniv was given a yellow card and Dallas took control of the ball in the Fire's end. Burn head coach Mike Jeffries decided to pull Jordan for 11 attackers, but Whitfield gained control of a loose ball and raced down the field to score uncontested.

Chicago goalkeeper Zach Thornton earned his seventh career playoff shutout.

Burn defender Richard Farrer received a red card for violent conduct and he will miss Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Dallas on Sunday.

A crowd of 8,314 was at Soldier Field for the first MLS game since the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
