Chacon named MLS player of week

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Forward Alex Pineda Chacon, who recorded a hat trick to lift the Miami Fusion to a 3-1 victory over D.C. United, was named MLS Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

Pineda Chacon, who won the award for the fourth time this season, jumped into the lead in the MLS scoring race with 47 points on 19 goals and nine assists. The Honduran broke the franchise's single-season goal-scoring record in the third minute on Saturday, slipping unmarked into the box to finish off Diego Serna's centering pass.

"I am extremely happy; what can I say?" Pineda Chacon said. "I need to thank God for helping me get this honor a few times this season. I am thankful also for my teammates, with whom I've worked well with and have been able to come out ahead throughout the season. And also to the coach for giving me the opportunity to come to the Fusion, a team that is competing for the league title."

Pineda Chacon struck again in the 26th minute, slipping the ball past goalkeeper Mark Simpson off a short corner, and completed his hat trick in the 70th minute. Pineda Chacon beat out Dallas forward Bobby Rhine and MetroStars forward Rodrigo Faria for the weekly award.
