FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Miami Fusion and the New England Revolution battled to a 1-1 draw, the first such result in MLS history. Miami's Diego Serna and New England's Imad Baba each scored a goal but neither team could find the back of the net in the two five-minute "golden goal" overtime periods that followed regulation play." The game marked the first regular-season match that has gone to overtime in MLS history, following a rule change announced in November 1999. In prior seasons, games that were tied at the end of regulation would advance to a shootout to determine the winner. Miami still holds a 5-3-1 advantage in the all-time series, which is knotted at 13 goals apiece over the nine games. After a tough battle in the first half, the deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute when former Columbus midfielder Andy Williams registered an assist in his debut with the Fusion. Taking a Miami free kick from the right side of the field, Williams found Serna in the penalty area. Serna flashed a header into the right side of the net for his 22nd tally in 48 games with the Fusion. The Revolution forced overtime with an 80th-minute tally from midfielder Imad Baba. Baba took a pass from defender Ted Chronopoulos, slotting the ball past Fusion goalkeeper Jeff Cassar for his 15th goal in four seasons with New England.
