WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Midfielder Dema Kovalenko scored in extra time to give D.C. United a 1-0 victory over the slumping New England Revolution and move them into third place in the Eastern Conference.

The United (6-6-6, 24 points) have won four of their last six matches and hurdled the Revolution (5-7-7, 22 points) on the goal by Kovalenko, his fifth of the season.

In the second minute of added time, second-half substitute Eliseo Quintanilla delivered a cross from the right flank met by a spectacular left-footed volley from Hristo Stoitchkov.

His powerful shot was blocked by Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis, but the rebound fell to the feet of Kovalenko, who was crashing the net and knocked the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box.

"We got lucky with the free rebound but it was a team effort and a great win for us," Kovalenko said. "We said before the match that this was the biggest game of the year for us."

The United have won the last two meetings with the Revolution, rallying for a 4-2 victory at Gillette Stadium on July 26. They are 11-4-1 all-time at home against the Revolution.

New England is winless in seven straight matches (0-4-3).
