TEAM NOTES
Clash Dec. 6: With a new nickname, uniform, colors and logo, San Jose's team in Major League Soccer took on a new identity today, becoming the San Jose Earthquakes. The team was known as the San Jose Clash during the first four seasons of MLS. "We are focused on strengthening our organization from top to bottom and putting an exciting, championship team on the field. That team will bear a name and look that reflect qualities indigenous to San Jose and the Bay Area that our fans can identify with," general manager Lynne Meterparel said. ... The Earthquakes will hope to fare better in 2000 than the Clash did in 1999, when the team finished fifth in the Western Conference and failed to make the playoffs. ... Former Galaxy coach Lothar Osiander leads the team after taking over for Brian Quinn late in the 1999 season. ... Earthquakes midfielder Eddie Lewis was named to the 1999 MLS Best 11, the all-league team. Lewis has become a regular selection at left midfield for U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena. ... At the MLS waiver deadline, the Earthquakes dumped three players: midfielder Jair, defender Joey Martinez and forward Alejandro Sequeira. The Earthquakes picked up former Galaxy defender Gabe Eastman in the subsequent waiver draft.
