Armas cleared to play for United States Posted: Thursday November 05, 1998 08:33 PM
PALO ALTO, California (AP) -- Midfielder Chris Armas has been cleared by CONCACAF, the ruling body of North American soccer, to play for the United States. The U.S. Soccer Federation received word Thursday that Armas, who played five matches with the Puerto Rican team in 1993 and 1994, is eligible to suit up for the U.S. squad. CONCACAF officials said none of the appearances had compromised Armas' U.S. eligibility. "I'm very excited that this has been settled and that I can now play for the United States," Armas said. "It's been my dream to play for my country, and I'm grateful that U.S. Soccer took the time and made the effort to allow me to play." Armas was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was an All-America at Adelphi University before turning professional. He played two years for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS, then was traded to Chicago for the 1998 season. Armas helped expansion Chicago win the title. Armas, who has been training with the U.S. team in Palo Alto, could start in Friday's international game against Australia. The 26-year-old played in every minute of the first 31 games during the 1998 MLS season, as well as all five Fire playoff games. He scored one goal and had a career-high 10 assists for 12 points.
