KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Kansas City Wizards general manager Doug Newman today decided not to renew his contract for the 2000 season.

Newman, 34, joined the Wizards in December 1997 as general manager, overseeing all day-to-day operations. He had concentrated solely on personnel matters for less than a year, taking over the role in mid-February, when the Wizards and Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL consolidated businesses. Both organizations are owned by the Lamar Hunt family.

He was responsible for the acquisitions of goalkeeper Tony Meola and defender Alexi Lalas. The Wizards improved four games this year, going 12-20 but missing the playoffs with the league's second-worst record.

The Wizards attendance average in 1999 was a league-low 8,183 per game, below the league average of 14,282.

Newman's is the second notable departure in less than a week for the Wizards. Lalas "stepped aside" after the season finale last Saturday.

According to the team, Newman wanted to explore other opportunities. He has a business and marketing background, serving as the national director of soccer promotions for adidas before joining the Wizards.
